  1. WOW... that is one old file GL2... things have improved a bit since then File is here is you want a look. http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/grumpy ... tahome.htm Regards, Bill.
  2. By the loks of it you don't need any tips Great pics.. fantastic fish. Bill
  3. They should be fine... but as Blitz points out... they are "not" always compatable with some of the fancier male Guppies. Reason here is that the Betta sees it as a chalange due to the bright colours and long flowing fins... which is the reason that the Siamese Fighters (Betta splendens) flare up at the sight on another male... so it might be an idea to keep a close watch on them. Bill.
  4. Hard to say GL.. might be just a case of the area under that scale was damaged, and the scale is now being shed. Fish can re-generate their scales pretty quickly with the right treatment, and usually it doesn't leave a scar. Bill.

    Hello!

Hi Roy, Welcome to the New Zealand Fishroom. Saw you had registered earlier and wondered when you would post. All fish lovers here... both fresh and marine.. with lots of Goldie keepers. Hope you enjoy your visits. Tell us a bit about the hobby over there Bill.
  6. Find a Hardware store that caters for farmers.. especially "Dairy" farmers. They stock various sizes of clear tube for milking machines and such. Also, many garages stock it in the smaller sizes. Alkathene pipe is normally black.. (several miles of it on our place ) The $2 dollar shop usually has thin clear acrylic cylinders for holding single stem roses... might be a thought. Give the Rose to your loved one Bill. .
  7. One lot has been on for around four years... still looks as good as the day it was fitted... apart from the dust that is "Rubber" inertubes these days are not "rubber" in the normal sense of the word, but more of a synthetic material. Bill.
  8. Sounds definitely the cause of the prob. Metafix should help. Highly coloured fish like these tend to go a dull whitish colour in areas that are damaged.. (possibly early signs of fungus, or scale breakdown. ) .. then later fungus may set in fully, so early treatment is important. Bill.
  9. Hi Matt, You say: Picking at straws here... but my thoughts would be the Keyholes. In a "line up" of the criminals.. the Congo's are not "usually" classed as an aggresive fish.. but more of an "after predator".. which will go into a feeding frenzy if a tasty morsal is on the menu... namely fresh fish... or fingers The other possibles... The Other Angel... Primary. Cockatoos... hardly. Rams... Hardly. Corys... no chance. Rummys... hardly likely. Female BN... not sure. One thing is certain.. they would all possibly of had a go once the first damage was done to the Angel. Bill.

  11. Might not be the "look" you are after... but a good way to waterproof the ends of tube fiitings, and also stop the tubes dropping out is.. Cut two lengths (approx 75mm) of bicycle intertube. (The narrow racing bike tubes are best approx 25mm diam) Stretch these over the tube ends and roll back to allow you to install the tube. Once in place, just roll the tube over the holder and both the tube and holder are sealed. I've had this type of conversion on my tanks for years, with no signs of condensation or water getting into the lamp ends. BIll.
  12. Wonderful pictures Travis&Vicky, Pity your thread got highjacked As a past Ocsar keeping and one that used to show them, I can appreciate your love for these great guys. Does "any" other fish have the ability to look at you with those BIG hush puppy eyes and rubbery lips with such character Makes you want to lift them out of the tank and hug them he he. Fantastic... Thanks for sharing. Bill.
  13. Hi Matt, Not a lot to go on with your brief description.. but at least you got some pics.. First off.. who else is in the tank...? Fish don't "naturally" get like this overnight... so obviously something has had a go at it. How old are the fish...? It may be that you have two mature fish and the other Koi was trying to get into spawning mode.. but the one in the pic was not too keen.. so the other begame agressive and beat the hell out of it. Possibly then... (due to its rundown condition).. the others (if any).. had a go at it, and so it had no defense to fight back. Looked like a real nice fish Matt... and sorry to hear about your loss. Hope you can find a decent replacement. Check the other Koi for a few battle scars... it might give you a clue. Just a footnote here: Angels in groups can become very much like a gang of stroppy kids, and often if the most dominant of the pack is picking on a weaker less dominant fish, then most of the rest of the group will often join in with the hassling of the less dominant one. This might also be the case if you have a few of them in there... but as I say... Few Details. Bill.
  14. I have a complaint. When you open the cover of the AW.. You "can't" put the damn thing down till you have read it cover to cover Great stuff Caryl.. many many thanks. You deserve a big hug from everyone. Bill.

    Howdy Folks

Hi Marktrix, Welcome to the NZ Fishroom. Very true... .. and it grows by the hour. Sure hope you have a big place out there in Auckland, because that tank you have thoughts on will never be enough once the fish bug gets hold of you again Lots of Aucklanders here.. and you may even know a few. Great to have you join us. Chat room gets pretty busy around 9 to 10pm each night... but we'll save you a seat if you care to drop in. Bill.
  16. Hi Morgie, Great to have you join us I recon "all" fish have personalities, and if they are observed closely they "always" have something new to teach us Bill.
  17. Hi again Muerk, Sounds like it is the Elodia type plant. If you click on the FNZAS logo at the top left of thiis page, you will be led to another part of the site where you will find heaps of stuff... plus a plant data base where you can ID the plant. You said: Quite right... it does tend to go a bit mushy (especially in a warm tank).. but another reason is that the Goldies tend to love to munch on it, and after a few chews you get dying leaves and quite a bit of mess. Goldies "are" pretty messy in their habits, waste production, and eating.. so you just have to keep up with the regular clean-ups after them. You can nip the stalks off about midway and transplant them, and under the right conditions they should grow.. but if the growth will keep up to the hungry Goldies is another matter Try them with a bit of lettuce leaf... this might help give the plants a rest. If your fish tend to uproot the plants, then anchor them down with a small pebble and a rubber band. All the best.. Bill.
  18. Hi muerk, Great to have you join us. Many started off with a couple of Goldies... now look at them complete Fishaholics The "weed" you have is possibly a plant called Elodia Densa.. or commonly known as "Oxygen Weed".. but if you can describe it, or post a pic, we will soon let you know what it is. Lots to see and do here... might catch you in the chat some night. Bill.
  19. Another mis-leading post by Alan. When I'm wrong... I admit it.. If I'm not sure.. I keep my mouth closed. Sorry Shae.. No offence meant, but others besides the first poster will read these posts, and your original statement above could definitely be mis-leading. No official reference of this type would have reached publication. The topic is Betta splendens.. do a Google search Shae. Bill.
  20. Shae said: Then said: Well you got the "second" part possibly right Shae... but certainly not the first part. Please get your info riight before posting Bill.
  21. Certainly wouldn't start stripping your tank.. as it will (as you say).. stress the fish out. Also disturbing your filters won't be very helpful, so clean them only if you "have" to. Chances are it became a meal for the Goldie.. especially if it wasn't as active as the others. Goldies have faily big mouths when you consider the amount of pellets they can get in there and consume. Let things settle, and keep an eye out just in case. Bill.

    Flushing fish

My opinion of this... (and it's just my opinion).. is that you are being concerned over nothing really. When you think of the effulent, garbage, and "other objects" that "are" flushed down the loo.. or get into the sewage systems.. then I really can't see how the dying fish population of the NZ Aquarist would effect the environment. The treatment plants often boast that their water is "so pure" it is drinkable after leaving their processing plants.. along with the fact that many of the parasites that tropical fish die of require a new host in a short time if they are to survive. Being on tank water and septic tanks we don't have this prob.. however.... I suppose we all have to think about what the re-cycled water is used for.. or where it goes.. once we push the old flush buttton. Bill.
  23. Herefishes said: Shelly said: Most of the Gourami "do" bob back and forth, usually with the feelers extended. This is their way of "feeling" things out before they make any drastic moves.. and really is not a sign of illness, but could be just a sign that the fish is a little concerned about what is around it. Bill.
  24. Also posted on the Poecilia Site. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Well people... it is FRIDAY.. the SIXTH OF MAY. There was discussion above about a meeting in the Poecilia Chat room, which some agreed on. Mystic said: Shae said: Can we get some form of OFFICIAL NOTICE posted so that we know what is happening... or is this a "no go" Emails need to be sent, and an official notice both here and on the Poecilia site Come on Committee..
