  1. Alan asked: I tried the small light system way back when in the UK.. and it certainly helps attain a higher yeild. I think it provides a feeling of security for the parents being able to "see" their clutch, and also for the fry, once hatched, to have a central area to congregate under, as the light definitely attracts them to one spot, making it easier for the parents. Bill
  2. Hi Raven, Good stuff I often keep a small six volt lamp running during the night so that they stay on constant duty. They don't seem to mind this.. especially if other fish are about, which generally doesn't happen with me as they are usually in the breeding tanks, but I still use the small light. Be wary if you have any Pleco's or such fish in there, as they will clean the eggs up the first time the parents are not watching Bill.
  3. Ditto: It sure looks fine for a while... but then peels off once it is set. The Silicone I use is Silaflex RTV Professional Range for Glass and Ceramics Clear type. Marketed by Fosroc and available at any decent hardware store. Bill.
  4. Sounds good Bluetom Pity the parents had so many distractions... as it's great to watch them with the fry. Hope you manage to save some. Bill.
  5. Hi Hands, Personally I would use a separate tank. Symptoms of Gill Flukes are erratic flicking of the fish (similar to white spot).. and on close examination with a good lens you can see the flukes, but the only sure way is to take a smear and look under a scope. Bill.
  6. .. Didn't realise that Inters post was several months old he he. I too would be keen to hear the results. Bill.

Rachel said: Nothing insulting as far as I'm concerned... I get called a Pom by all manner of people.. but I ain't a prisoner... nor ever was.. buy hey... they call NZlanders "Kiwi's".. but you ain't birds.. and the Australians "Ozzies".. but it is taken in contex. As Billaney points out.. P,O,M,E The old word that was used by the British for the Prisoners Of Mother England that were sent to the Australian Continet as punishment. Bill.
  17. A piece of fine sandstone rock is much safer than sandpaper... or you can use an oilstone.... (Keep it wet) Bill.
  18. Kevin said: Food for though hey Caryl.. I'm sure that having "visual" records of the parents and offspring, plus a ,means of knowing who has what fish, (which could be on the point of extiction for all we know.. he he) ... would be a bit better than just looking at a list to see that Member "X" has bred Fish "X".. but then again, I don't know what system is used at the moment apart from the list on the FNZAS Homepage. Bill.

  20. Hi Kevin.. Congrats on your new appointment. A new style Breeding Register is under construction for a number of clubs at the moment. Screen shots are here: http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/grumpy ... 20Site.htm If you, or any other clubs are interested, please email me for details. Regards, Bill.
  21. Wow Snownan... How distressing can it get to lose that many fish in such a short time. It seems pretty obvious from what you say that the fish have died from a very rapid change in environment.. as it appears your tank was well established. Only a few thoughts on the matter, and these are: Is the shop getting their stock from a "Local" supply.. or are they ones brought in..? Were the fish you bought in "Quarantine" prior to you buying them..? OK.. Let's consider this: If the fish were from a local supply.. then the answer is simple. The company in question should scratch the breeder from their lists. If the fish "were" in quarantine for a period of time... then chances are they were kept under what I term as "Hospital Conditions".. in other words an absolute sterile condition... no bugs.. no infections.. and possibly with UV sterilization running. OK... You get taken into hospital for some ailment (I hope not.. but this is my example).. and you are there for a week or so under very hygenic circumstances. You come out feeling pretty groggy and weak.. but hey... you have your freedom.. but your resistance to ANYTHING is now at the lowest it can ever be... Colds.. Germs.. you name it.. so the next thing is you are flat on your back in bed with some sort of ailment. Just the same with the fish.. "if" they had been in quarantine. The water they were in was possible almost like distilled water.. no germs etc. The fish (over the Q period).. had become used to this... Nice temp.. Regular feeds.. No bugs etc.. but come time to move house (being sold or moved into the shop).. they get a sudden shock to the system.. and only the fittest survive. Along comes Snowman that sees these "apparently" great looking healthy looking fish.. and hey... he whips them off home and plops them into his tank of "soup".. which it is to the fish that have been in quarantine.. but not for the fish that are used to it. So.. the fish are now faced with all manner of things that they have no resistance to.. so along comes M'r Germ.. and BANG.. it goes through the pack like a fire fueled by petrol.. and before you know it.. half your fish are dead. OK... So what the hell can we do..? First off.. Find out EXACTLY if possible the conditions the fish were kept in PRIOR to them going on sale. If old stock... then find out EXACTLY the water conditions etc. If the shop SUDDENLY gets a whole load of new stock... then LOOK.. but don't buy. Ask for some to be put to one side if you are interested.. then return in a day or so to see how they are. OK... perhaps the shop won't be keen on this.. but if you leave a deposit, then they might assist. Hope this helps. Take care now. Bill.
  22. Nice Soft Fresh Lettuce Leaf..
  23. shauntilyard said: Now a lot of "Home Brew" members would be interested in these type of fish :) Prob is... it would take a while to get a decent glassful The thing to remember Shantily, is that it is "not" what your tank will hold "eventually" once it is established.. but what is the safe number to start off the process in the beginning... and the answer here is around six small fish, till you get things starting to come right. Patience is the main ingredient to starting up a new tank. Good stuff Shantily. Hope you find the article some use... and thanks Steve Bill.
  24. Best way if you will only be a few hours doing the shift is to buy a Plasic Dustbin, then put a rubbish bag indide and half fill with water from your tank. Put the fish in and wrap the bin in a blanket. Remove all the rocks and such from your tank.. (the gravel should be ok).. then do the move as quick as poss. Filters should be ok for a few hours if kept wet. Best of luck on the move. Take care now Bill.
  25. I posted an article in the Beginners Section (How Many Fish).. that you might like to read Caper. It explains the dangers of too many fish. Bill.
