Quick answer JW... Yes... it needs the brace... especially if it is bowing. Empty the tank... clean ALL the old silicone from the split area ensuring you have a good clean surface when finished. Use a good reliable silicone recomended for aquarium use and reseal the joint. Leave for at least three days before filling. Hope it goes well. Bill

Well done B&K for passing on such clear instructions to FS. Good luck with the tank FS.. and hope you will take things nice and steady till you get that filter established . Bill.

Hi there Elkaal... and welcome to the forums. There's a welcome section if you care to tell us a bit about yourself Your problem... You don't say the type of fish you have... nor the size.. but we will presume they are Goldfish. The best thing you could do with the fish bowl is to empty it... then find another use for it.. as you will have constant problems trying to keep it clean. And yes... a filter might help the situation.. but long term.. your fish need space.. plus a good surface area .. (which the bowl won't give).. plus they need room to grow. The water "will" be cloudy most days.. as with the small area that you have, the wastes from the fish plus any excess food that doesn't get eaten will cause the water to cloud quickly. Changing say half of the water each day might slow the problem slightly.. but the real answer is to see if you can pick up a cheap second hand tank (say600x300x300).. which will house the fish a lot better.. and if they become too big.. then you could trade them in for some smaller ones. A tank has a lot of other benefits.. less Maintenance.. more Visual Appeal.. Space for plants and ornaments.. plus far better conditions for the fish you have. Have a look at some of the pics of members tanks here to see what I mean.. and you may even decide later to go into tropicals Questions: How often are you feeding.. and how much of what...? Do you do any water changes... if so when... how much...? What fish are they... approximate size... ? No probs... plenty of help here

Great area around there... Ilkley.. Otley.. Harrogate.. then up to York.. Ripon... (fantasic trout fishing here).. plus all the Abbey's and centuies of history that each place holds.. right back to the Vikings... and beyond. Ahhh.. Great memories.. but cold ones. BTW: If you want to quote something.. then just scroll down from the reply box till you find the bit you want in the posts below... then highlight it.. (left button and drag).. then press CTRL+C.. then paste it into your post... CTRL+V.. then once it is where you want it.. highlight it again, and click on the QUOTE above the relpy box and you have it... no colour change needed. Sounds complicated... but real easy. Bill.

Flying Snow said: What a great gift for the new house owner. Juwels were always top of the range even during the early '60's Welcome to the NZ Fishroom FS.. Real nice when you find a site that you feel comfy in straight away.. and we see you are posting already, so you have already got your feet wet. I moved here from Skipton at the edge of the Yorkshire Dales Glad I don't have to face any more English winters Great to have you with us. Bill.

.... but... seeing it is not "actually" a "sale" of any description.. it could be moved to the Off Topics.. as the discussion is very interesting. Sorry Cees.. but you wrote the guidelines

Bill scratches his greying beard in confusion. Tell us... When you try to go into the chat... does the Java applet come up and signify that it is loading..? Did you download the the "actual" Java and allow it to self install...? I ask because I had a number of probs when I first downloaded the Java, and made it save to my drive in the hope of being able to use it on another drive if needed... but not the case... it has to do the install on its own. Bill.

Terrible... Terrible... Terrible... Been here almost a month and only just saying hello Warm welcome to you Simfish. Been watching your tank progress... real nice, good pics, and great to see you getting involved in all the topics.

! You already are Chookness.. the moment you signed up... we make everyone welcome here, and hope you enjoy your visits.

Another point is... "What are you feeding your fish"..? Often when people feed a lot of live foods it tends to act as a laxative, and eventually (although the fish seems to be feeding).. it runs straight through them, and so is not giving the fish any nutritional value, which would account for the sunken bellies. Just another thought... but it is probably one of the faults mentioned above. Hope you can sort it. Bill.

alanmin4304 asked: The world does not revolve around the metric system Alanmin.. nor are we all Kiwi's here... so it "could" have been a 60" (5 foot)x30"x30" How often do you hear big tank owners brag about their 1800 tank... NAW... they have a SIX FOOTER. I rest my case... plus it WAS 2:28am after all he he. Bill.

Is that 600x300x300...? All just the DIY side of fishkeeping Tsarmina.. and is not really a big job for a tank that size. You "could" just try removing the faulty seal and re-sealing that side... but the risk is yours. Look at it as an exersize for your future as an all glass tank maker Great practice project. Bill.

Sure hope you are getting the authors permission to reprint all this info you are giving these days LB.

If the silicone has peeled away as you say.. then you would be well advised to do a complete strip of all the old silicone and start from scratch. What size is the tank..?
-
The stocks I have were in the barn.. and I thought it was by the company I put. Sorry.. it is "Fosroc" Tsarmina asked: If the tank is just weeping... then you "might" get away by applying some silicone on the "inside" over the weeping area... with no need to empty the tank... just put some on your finger and force it into the leaking area.... but if the seal is obviously split.. then you will need to remove all traces of the old stuff and reseal the area. Bill.

Most use RTV Silflex Professional for Glass and Ceramics... by Rosfoc It's recommended for use in aquariums, and is available for around $13:00 from any decen hardware store.

I find that (if you can get an opening in the silicone).. that a thin wavy edged type knife as used for meat or bread works well. Gives you heaps of sawing action.. and with the addition of a bit of lube in the form of cooking oil.. it makes the job a breeze.. but you "still" have quite a bit of cleaning up to do when the sheets are apart. The paint scrapers with the Stanley type blade makes the next bit of cleaning up quite a bit easier. Bill.

True Caryl I "originally" put the wrong link.. but soon spotted it and put the correct one there. You were posting while I was editing he he.

Lots of info on the site if you care to have a look around This is a "Sticky" that is at the head of the FW section. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/shippi ... t9188.html Take care now Bill.

The words "Bulkhead Fitting" is really a term used by Boatbuilders for the adaptor that passes through the hull to allow cooling water to enter.. and surplus water to be pumped out. The old water tank makers (galvanized).. adopted this word for the fitting that passed through the wall of the tank. Don't know about the Americans.. but it is a general term used in the UK. You can make your own fitting by using a threaded barrel nipple and two flange nuts.. simple as Bill.

Alan asked: I was curious about this and posted in the SW section under one of the ICH threads. I asked if the two types were the same.. According to one of the members they differ.. and apparently the SW version can't live in FW.. and visa versa. There seems to be quite an epidemic among the marine keepers at the mo. Bill.

I'm not a Killie keeper these days, but I certainly know that when this forum for Killies first started there were very few posts for the simple reason there were very few people who actually kept Killies. Through the efforts of Alan and certain others the situation has changed in leaps and bounds, with increased membership into the NZKA and the boost in interest in thse wonderful fish. Alan rightfully deserves the position he has held through his total dedication to the species and the improvement of making the rarer species available to members of the NZKA. Let's face it guys... the NZKA was DEAD until Alan took up the position, and it seems from the post that Mitch made that the decision that Alan made was "not" a self motivated one for self gain... but for the benefit of the Killie society in general.. but if those at fault can't see this, then they should find somewhere else to air their grievances. Reconsider Alan... You built a wall that has a few crumbling bricks.. but the ones that are still intact are enough to to support your cause for many years to come. Bill.
