Reef said: Sorry Reef.. but we have to stick the a format that suits "everyone" and doesn't make the site hard to view for other users who are not able to view at that width. The single post disrupts "all" the thread until the next page.. not just your post. Perhaps a distant shot.. then the segmented shots with an explanation would have been good. As mentioned.. Still looks real nice and brilliant clear pics Bill.

    Hey there

Welcome to the NZ Fishroom Feniswolf You certainly have come to the right place "first" if you are just starting out again. From here on in.. it can be the most rewarding experience you have had in a long time if you do lots of reading here and take things in stages.. but if you rush things withiut much thought, it can be a real stressful time.. so ask all the questions before you get in too deep.. and spend your money wisely Hope you have some great times here and make lots of friends. Bill.

Great pics Reef Had to edit your first group as you placed the closing "/Img" tags next to the opening "Img" tags.. which made some of the pics appear at double the screen width. Could you ensure that you push "Enter" after using the "" tag. This will allow pics to show "down" the screen.. not across it . Many thanks. Bill. Mod.
  5. Hi there YH88.. Great to have you join us Could you please edit your profile This will allow many un-needed questions when replying or seeking help. Many thanks, Moderator.
  6. Hi there Poppy, Great to have you along.. and we hope you soon get back into the swing of things after your time off. You say: Can we get you to do us a small favour and add "Palmerston North." to your profile as well. Makes it so much easier if you need help or locations. Hope you enjoy your visits Bill
  7. Sounds good Tim.. although I suppose the setup would be mounted "above" your normal cover glass.. in which case a thin smear of vaseline would prevent corrosion.. much like on car battery terminals. For some jobs I use the 7mm and split it in half.. (2x3.5mm).. I designed a splitter that does this almost automatically. How many metres do you need for the job..? I have a couple of rolls here.. and I can send you a few metres free gratis if you want. Just email me the details. Hope it goes well. Bill.
  8. Hi Penny, From what I have heard and read, making a tank of Perspec is a pretty daunting task.. as you have to get the edges either specially machined or Laser cut so that you get a perfect edge to edge seal. A cheaper alternative might be the small 18ltr tanks that someone was mentioning recently from the Warehouse. They worked out about 12 bucks I think.. and I recon that the Perspec plus the cutting and the special solvent to seal it would cost you a fair bit in the long run. Bill.

You can get Dolomite in many forms.. Rocks.. Powder.. Tablets. etc. Good for raising the Ph.. and for settling the stroppy stallions down when the mares are a bit frisky As Ira says.. Livestock Feed Shops have it... or your local vet may have some if they deals with Rural Areas. Bill.
  10. Hi Tim, There's a copper foil tape that is used for "Lead Light Windows" It's self adhesive, and comes in rolls from 3.5mm wide to around 10mm I think.. but I use the 7mm for routed slot car tracks... among other things OK:.. You can stick this tape to a board of any sort.. even hardboard.. or glass even. Draw up your circuit for your positive and negative lines so that you can get the anode leg on one side and the cathode leg on the other. Because you are doing them in pararell.. then you would only need the strips around a mil or two apart. Just peel the backing off the first part of the tape.. stick it on the beginning of your circuit and peel the backing off as you follow the circuit around. Ensure the tape is firmly stuck before soldering by running a Bic lighter (rounder side).. over the tape. This gets rid of any tiny air pockets and gives a great seal. The narrow tape "will" go around bends in the circuit.. but I suggest you just do square corners and add a bit of solder at the joints. Once the tape is in place... Just solder the legs on.. add the power.. and away you go. Look in the Yellow Pages for somewhere that does Stained Glass windows.. or Lead Light Windows... and they may have the tape. If you can't find any.. contact me and I will sort something out for you.... if you want to use this method that is Wouldn't bother trying to get the tape from the Model or slot racing shops.. as it will cost you three times the price. Bill.

  19. Hi Jinks, Not knocking your project.. but there could be a number of probs you will have to sort out. Access to the tank is one thing.. and the only decent method would be to have the top hinge upward to allow you access. The other thing would be lighting.. as there is very little space above what will presumably be the waterline.. and even with thinline tubes they would be almost touching the water surface. Also if you are using tube lights.. the ballast unit would need to be remotely mounted, but I suppose there is quite a bit of room in the lower cabinet area.. provided you consider leaks or breakages that might happen. The condensation factor is also going to be pretty high in that small enclosed space.. so you may have to think about this also. Bill.
  20. Hi Dianne.. Welcome to the NZ Fishroom. Could you please add your location to your profile, as it will help avoid a lot of un-needed questions on location.. shops... pricing etc.. Coldwater (Freshwater) fish include Goldfish of many types.. and a few other species like White Cloud Mountain Minnows.. Paradise Fish.. some of the Barbs and such. These can be kept in an unheated tank or outdoor pool. Tropical (Freshwater).. are normally kept indoors in a heated aquarium.. and the species are numerous. Coldwater Marine is a "very" specialised area, and not really for the beginner.. and is very costly. Tropical Marine.. as above.. also very costly. HTH Bill
  21. Didn't know the lady, but it is always saddening to hear that such a dedicated person has passed on. Deepest condolences to the family. May she rest in peace now the pain has gone. Bill.
  22. HI Jinks, Welcome to the NZ Fishroom. Could you please edit your profile and add your location to avoid a lot of confusion. I think there may be a tank maker in the Henderson area.. (not sure).. but I'm fairly sure there was a recent post about it... otherwise Hollywoods would possibly be able to fix you up. Bill
  23. Yes they do... but by using a sponge you will have a prepared filter for when you move them on Bill.
  24. Caryl said: Is it a proven fact that fish suffer pain..? If so.. then why are the millions of fish per day allowed to flap around on the decks of ships for extended periods until they are either dead or snap frozen in the bowels of the ship. Do we consider this when we go fishing and pull a fish out from the sea, then delight it taking it home to show the family and cook it for a meal. Yet we create such a fuss about putting a sick fish from our tanks out of its mysery Few would look at the pain (if any).. that these fish are suffering and boycott the fish and chip shops or burger joints The GM debate will never be settled.. as it can be looked at in several ways.. Either Genetic Modification... or Genetic Manipulation. Do we boycott the long finned Danios.. the LF Neons.. the WCMM.. the high strains of Guppys that we see today.. or the fancy Goldfish strains.. ? Most of these would have had some form of genetic interference done upon them.. as selective breeding would be costly and take many years to perfect.. and most of it would have been done overseas.. but yet we still buy these fish. I'm not in favour of dyed fish.. but people who go on about GM should consider that most of the food they consume each day has had some form of GM in order to get to the standard it is today. BIll.

    tank pic*1

Well don't just offer suggestions guys... Start a new thread and tell us "all" how you get decent pics of the right size. The pics in question above were 1288X966.. which is why they were removed, as not only does it slow the site down for some users on dialup.. but it makes the rest of the thread very awkard to read until the pics have loaded.. and multiple pics make this even worse. A good thread on Photography would be a good addition here, as many members are "still" not sure "how" to post pics.. despite there being several "sticky" headings explaining the procedure. Camera... Lighting.. Angles of Shot.. Settings.. Resizing.. Quality.. Clarity... all great starters for a good thread Bill.
