  1. I've always thought that it would have been really helpful if members could post a small detail about the camera they use.. and the settings... bit like when you get your photographs published in mags. Many pics here are better than the mags.. and a few details might be helpful to others for camera selection.
  2. The big question is Tsar.. "What caused the base to break?" Was the stand not level..? Was there a styrene pad under it ..? Repairing a crack is pretty easy.. and if done correctly, then the repaired area is generally stronger than the other parts. You also don't have to cover the whole base... just ensure you have enough width to go around 50mm either side of the crack. Put the "patch" on the "inside" only.. and make sure everything is clean before applying the silicone. Just use the same thickness glass as the tank is made of. If it's 6mm... then the repaired area will become 12mm once patched.. so more than enough. Heaps of members have repaired tanks here... it ain't rocket science Take care now Bill.

Have a look here KP.. You might find something suitable. http://www.surplustronics.co.nz/shop/ Bill.
  4. Well.. the first thing is to know your fish.. and it habits and where it originated from. The shape of a fish will tell you a great deal. Thin slim fish tend to occupy waters that flow a little faster than the plump fat bellied species. Take your barbs for example.. slim.. deep bodied.. designed for quick movement through water.. rather like cutting through it.. but then look at a Betta with its long flowing fins and plump body. This on the other hand likes the bodies of water with hardly any movement. Many loaches have sucker mouths. This allows them to cling to rocks and such in fast flowing streams.. but also is an aid for feeding. Marine fish generally come from areas with high water movement and currents.. but the same basics apply.. as many will occupy areas with less flow.. in rock outcrops or sheltered areas. Most fish like a bit of flow.. but going overboard will soon tire the fish out and lower its reserves if it has to constantly fight its way in a strong current. Watch your fish. If they tend to hang around the areas with less flow.. like behind rocks and plants.. then you may have too much flow.
  5. Hi Caper, You ask: Yup.. it is a bit confusing.. but this is how I have always thought of it.. and I "may" be wrong.. so others may have opinions. The bubbles as they leave the airstone.. or airwall.. are enclosed spheres.. no matter what the size. During their travel to the surface, the liquid they are in.. (water).. can only absorb a certain small amount of air from the enclosed spheres.. (the bubbles).. but once these bubbles break as they reach the surfave.. they disturb the surface of the water.. and in doing so the movement allows (mostly surface air).. to be dragged into the water. This is then called "Disolved Air".. as it is now free to mix with the water. Have you ever notice fish rising from the sea or a lake on a rainy day..? The surface is being disturbed.. so the oxygen content is higher. More air will of course cause more surface disturbance.. so should in effect allow more disolved air to enter the water. But.. the consideration of the fish should be considered.. as many don't like strong currents over extended periods. HTH
  6. Reef Comments: ] Take warning Reef.. You are "still" pushing your products. Any further posts with this addition will be removed without warning.. irrespective of their content. Read the Guidelines. Take note.. that I am a member here.. one that is dedicated to the responsibility I was given. You are being dis-respectful to me for doing the work I was assigned to do here.. plus you are posting to create a reaction from me.. which you now have. Recently you PM'd me with a complaint regarding a member doing the "exact" same thing that you are doing.. obviously someone in competition with you. We have one set of guidelines.. and they apply to ALL members. Suggestion: Promote your products in the Commercial Section.. do a write up of the benefits.. I'm sure you will get lots of feedback. Bill Mod.
  7. Wow.. If you have two fish that size in a two footer.. then you "definitely" need the aeration.. and regular water changes Bill.
  8. Sounds like the resins and tannins still leaking from the wood. You often see this leaching from driftwood. Solution is to boil it.. then wash.. then reboil till it stops leaching. Bill.
  9. Might also be good to check the tank for small sharp rocks or shells that he may be moving around, as these guys are great excavators. Bill.
  10. Ok guys.. Let's not go there again and get "another" thread locked. Commercial promotions have their own forum.. and killing someones thread to promote goods is not allowed. Please keep on topic.. or start a new one of your own in the correct location. Posts made to create a reaction will be removed without warning. Bill. Mod.
  11. Sounds good Farmchic. Normal rule of thumb is to move fry into "small" quarters, so that they are not constantly hunting for food.. then as they grow.. move them onto larger quarters. Mollies and salt.. (see above).. good idea to add a bit to keep them happy. Newly hatch Brine Shrimp would go down well.. and they can take it from day one.. no sweat.. then Microworms after around a week.. and gradually weed them onto crushed flake foods and things should be sweet. Mollies are also "grazers".. so the like a bit of fresh alge to nibble on. Real sorry about your losses btw. Take care now,
  12. Answer is simple Mitch.. Increase the output pipe length so that it is slightly "above" the water line.. you will halve the bubble noise if you then set the flow so that the water is just flowing gently out.. which is how UG should work.. and not surging out so that the bubbles hit the cover glass..
  13. When you say "pot bellied.." I presume you mean swollen.. is that right..? You said: So unless something "real" drastic happened.. (which it seems to have done).. the tank and the feeding was ok.. but try getting them onto something more substantial than Liquifry before two weeks next time. So.. What you have to do now is sit back and think of every detail that you did with the tank, between the night they were ok.. and the morning they wern't. Was anything added to the tank.. apart from Liquifry..? Did anything happen that might have stressed them out..? Something changed the conditions so rapidly that it took them all.. not just the odd one or two that may have starved.... but the whole lot.. so it seems that over the night and morning something occured that you have to think hard about. Bill.
  14. Water.. Food.. Tank size.. Temp.. all seem good... plus water changes.. provided you took care about the temp of the water being added. Fry are more sensitive than adult fish. At two weeks they really should be onto more solid food though. Bit of a mystery.. but for something to kill them "all" off in one hit.. must have been something sudden.. like shock/stress.. or a poisoning of some sort.. maybe really high ammonia.. but real hard to pinpoint. Were they hollow bellied.. or did they look full or swollen..? Bill.
  15. .. Which they are not allowed to do if they are a commercial concern and in the middle of a non-commercial discussion thread.. Just a reminder guys.. Mods are watching. Bill.
  16. We need a few more details here Farmchic.. like.. Was it a newly set up tank you put them in.. or one with established water and filter..? What have you been feeding.. and how often..? What size tank..? Temp of tank..? What water changes have you done..? Read what you said... but did they "all" die at once overnight...? Bill.
  17. Hey there.. You say: DON'T do that... You were talking of extreme aeration.. not a simple air stone.. so if you have a slightly heavy fish load, you will "need" some form of aeration... and to turn it off could cause major probs. Again with the pellets.. Pellets are fine in many cases.. but some are heavy in fibre and starch. Feed a "variety" of foods if you can.. and if in doubt.. water log the pellets slightly so that they will sink. Hope you get this "before" you doze off.
  18. NEVER... Last CS I saw was when Ena Sharples died Be a good one for you to start in the "Off Topics" section to tell us what shows are on over there.. but don't give the punch lines away.. plus a few food and petrol prices would be interesting.. and fag prices for the smokers Things "used" to be cheap over here.. but.... BTW: Can you nip around to our lass and tell her I'll ring her this weekend he he.
  19. Might also be the time to point out that Goldies feed a lot off the surface.. and many can get bloated through the intake of air bubbles.. especially at the surface. Many pellet foods can also cause bloat.. as they are hurriedly swallowed and don't have time to break down before they get into the gut.. where they swell up. Many are under the impression that the air stone adds oxygen to the water.. but in fact it adds very little.. but what it does is that it "disturbs" the surface where it can draw disolved oxygen below the surface. Bit more tech than this.. but this is the easy explanation he he. BTW: You time is showing fine here.. did you get it sorted at your end..?

Sharn said: Certainly a fact that many of the Cichlids are sold.. not just for visual appeal.. but because of their antics and behaviours. Who can resist those "puppy dog" eyes and the huge rubbery lips of the Oscar.. and the way they can shift more gravel and rocks than a JCB in a real short time.. and what other group take such amazing care of thier young .. and who can fail to be amazed (no matter how many times they see it..).. at a female spitting out dozens of young from her mouth.. and at a slight disturbance the whole pack fights to get back to the safety of the mothers mouth.. then as they grow, she is seen swimming around with a mouthful of tails The Cories are fish that I get great pleasure out of watching... with their never ending comical antics.. the "Comical Workaholics" The Archer is another fish that is choice to watch as it stalks an insect above the water line like a cat waiting to pounce.. then SPLAT.. a water jet hits the insect with perfect accuracy. Such a wonderful fascinating world.. and such a world that we have yet to learn so much about.
  21. Makes you laugh a bit really.. My missus is constantly complaining because Coro St.. is about six months behind the UK. I "never" watch the soaps BTW Bill.
  22. Hi Janet,.. (PJ.. Pixie).. Pajama Girl Bubble walls are another one of those "gimmiky gadgets" that were designed for a slight visual appeal.. but have no "real" purpose in a Fresh Water tank.. but many Marine keepers use them as a means of circulationg water. Many gadgets and additions fall into this group. Possibly the neighbour was glad to get rid of it.. as they normaly require a decent pump to force the bubbles over the full length.. plus can be quite noisy. Also.. depending on force and bubble size.. they can be stressful for some fish having to swim against a constant current.. and some fish can be adversely affected by a fine bubble stream. They "may" also affect plant growth in some instances. HTH
  23. Hi Elly, Great to have you join us Where are you from..? Would be real nice if you put your location in your profile. Look forward to lottsa little babies coming your way BTW.. Chances are it "was" the three spot.. but the Sailfin just took over once the competition had been removed.. plus being alone, he would chase anything in the same species range. Bill.
  24. Hi there Simon... Welcome to the NZ Fishroom. You're in good company here.. lots of things for us all to learn.. and lots of great helpful members. Six tanks sounds like the addiction has grabbed you real bad.. but hey.. there's a great cure... More Tanks Enjoy your visits.
