  1. ha, would say I was too concerned about the bugs themselves, more what damage they may do to my fish (parasites etc) Hmmm, guess its a hard one with the fish, as technically, having breeding guppies with larger fish that eat the fry may be considered feeding live fish to bigger fish?
  2. Plant ecophysiology - Biol 255 and in the afternoon, kinda sucks as I'm not that flash with it but the course overall is pretty good. Mint, have you got a female or two for him? My male just ignored my albino female, would been an awesome colour mix ae.
  3. Hey, nice clear water, are they juwel rekords by any chance? If so, are you still using the stock filter or is it another one in there? ps, where did you get the gravel from? I think it might be the same stuff as mine?
  4. Hi, Just wondering if anyone knows the ins and outs of feeding live food to tropical fish, ie the legality of feeder fish, what other live animals can and cant be fed and where or where not to get them from? (rivers/lakes or just from other peoples ponds?) Reason I ask is that the bucket of daphina I have growing slowly out back has found more and more inhabitants, like small water beetles etc. What about other insect larvae? Thanks, Isaac
  5. ha, yeah, this is my way of distracting myself... is that yours in your profile? I have to try to get a better pic of mine, the camera struggles to focus on the black is the hardest part unfortunately. When are your exams? I've got my second (for this lot of exams) tomorrow.
  6. Mm, even I agree for the most part, I had to centre the tank around this one to make it look like it fit somewhat but very worth it. My girlfriend got it for me along with the angelicus loaches, one of the best surprises ever.
  7. Yeah, i realised I should have after uploading all the photos, by which point I couldn't be bothered starting all over again. next time maybe.. And as for the fighter, actually haven't had a problem at all with the gourami, completely chilled out and even the angels have been fine. Having said that, its a four foot tank with heaps of plant cover so they all have their own places to relax I guess. I'll keep an eye out like usual though, seeing he's my favourite (excluding the loaches) and the aim is to have everything living together in peace I've got a smaller tank with a female fighter (and dividers) in if he did need somewhere to go too.
  8. From what I've heard they're the 'new' lighting system, kinda like t5s are to t8? But don't come in as many colours or sizes just yet? I'd be a little interested to see what happens with them before I did anything, any idea if they're more efficient than HO t5s? Feeling a little left behind with my old t8s really...

    Hi from chch

Hi, new to the forum but have been keeping tropical fish for a few years now. Found out about this site through uni. Currently have one planted community juwel Rio 240 with the old t8s running a jager 200w heater, an ehiem 2215, and airstone with black sand. Have a very mixed lot of fish, 1 delta tail siamese fighter, 3 pearl gourami, one each of the opaline and golden gourami, 6 angel fish, 4 hoplo cat fish, 7 bristlenoses, 2 common whiptails, a red tail shark, 3 siamese algae eaters, 2 dwarf flag cichlids (actually bought off dennisisawesome via trademe) 10 or so white clouds and neons each. oh and loaches, 10 chains, 3 angelicus' and one kuhli with one harlequin rasbora bringing up the end. may have forgotten something but oh well. Let me know what you guys think, any ideas, good places for fish (being a poor student and all that), what I'm doing wrong etc. here's a few pics Oh, Any ideas if this one is an egg carrying female or just fat? Anyway, thats about it, Cheers, Isaac
  10. Ha, I'll swap you my old t8 lighting unit from my 240 for your t5s?
  11. Hi, just new to the site and sorry if I'm a little late on this one but if clown loaches get too big for you, I've found Angelicus loaches to be excellent for getting rid of snails, and at least keeping the ramshorn snail population down quite low on my old tank. Even had them bore a hole in the mystery snail shell and rip it out. Took them a few days to figure out hoe but they did. Quite a large one too at that point. Otherwise, if you feel risky, a few skunk loaches may do the trick, just they can be extremely nippy and may not work with things like discus. Just my two cents worth. Isaac
