hovmoller got a reaction from firenzenz in What 'rare and unusual' are people keeping these days?
I suppose these qualify as being rare in NZ:
Geophagus sp. "Red Head". Hopefully we can spread them around and make them not so rare.

Ok I'll participate. I suppose it could fall in the rare category.
I still have two Bandit Cories - C. Metae. These are no longer allowed to be imported (not sure why) so are hard to come by.
I am still VERY keen to breed these, so if anyone has any the would like to sell me please send me a message.

Yeah except for the ugly eel thing and the tiger whatever that tank had some great looking fish!

Got a group of them last January, at about 25mm. Now about 90mm TL.

Good call! I'm sure it will love the swimming space

Yeah you might be overestimating the tank volume a bit as well.. I'm pretty sure if you fill up a Juwel Rio 300 up to the line it holds 300L, not 346L
You might have used outside dimensions?
But looks like you have good filtration

Try firing all your details into this site and see what it says:

It'll tell you if you are overstocked, which fish are incompatible, etc.

Don't want to hijack your post but my pair have finished their first spawn. Hundreds of eggs were laid on a vertical piece of wood but with 20+ bristlenoses in the tank needless to say the eggs didn't last the night. Now the pair are in their own tank ready for next round. Have already begun cleaning a rock.

Great looking fish. Deep rich colours. Very nice!
I don't think your attention span is particularly short. I know exactly what you are talking about regarding interest. For me it has always been about the journey and not so much about the end result so as soon as a new project is finished the first thing I want to do is change it.
I've gone through a similar phase in the last year where the big tank was just on an auto feeder and all I did with it was do a water change sometimes.
Lately my interest have sparked up again, it happened when the new geos started spawning and now I just want to breed all my fish again. So it comes and goes. Watching youtube clips can be really helpful in sparking interest again I've found.
I agree a change is in order but something like native marine would be a B&#%!* for your tank.
I think a better idea is to try to get that tank placed in you living room wall instead of in a room by itself. I'm sure it's possible somehow. I can help with drawings etc. if you need.
Good luck and keep in mind I have around 20-30 baby G. "Tapajos Orange Head" swimming around in my tank at the moment and I'm sure there are more to come.

hovmoller reacted to fishyNZ in Geophagus sp. "orange head" fry
My apologies, it has been a while since I last updated. I recognize the level of interest for this particular species and appreciate all previous comments.
The fry/juvies from my “A” couple (video above) are growing quite well; they are now at least 2.5cm. I have been feeding cut prawns every other day aside from the staple Repashy/NLS mix, which is fed 3-5 times daily. They are in a small 70L tank so water changes are done daily, sometimes twice per day, at least 30% each.

The good news is that my “B” couple, now in their own tank, successfully spawned (3rd attempt). The eggs were laid on bare glass; a lot of sand was sifted aside.

Within 24 hours, the eggs were picked up. I had only seen the male holding; his jaw had a noticeable protrusion and was in a motion on its own.

I managed to successfully strip the fry from the father’s mouth, possibly a hundred or more.

About 30+ fry still managed to escape the stripping process. Both parents seemed to be in good condition; head coloration is slowly returning back after almost being completely faded.
