  1. Hi everyone, Here's my DSB saltwater tank. For a long time, i've wanted to test this method. Lighting : 2 x 24 w 10.000 K CFL Koralia 1 (1500 L / h) 10 / 12 cm of sand bed. No skimmer or anything else.
  2. Summer camp  You got it right ! Ok, i'm gonna post some pictures soon.
  3. So sad... There are so beautiful species and they are really useful to emulate a kind of ecosystem in a tank. You just don't have any shrimps in pet shop or it's not allowed 'cause of biosecurity ?
  4. Beautiful... I wish I could have austrolebia nigripinnis and some nothobranchius. And the beautiful fundulopanchax amieti too.
  5. Hi Sophia, Thank you ! There is no silly question I don't have any air stone, just a stream pump (sometimes, some species don't like any stream). Oxygen comes from plants. I set my nano tanks up trying to follow a kind of natural way. But fishes and shrimps like these are not big polluters. And I got another tanks with filters. So, how do I proceed ? Soil (bacterium in it) and plants help to filter the water (ones which grow fast and floating plants). A stream pump move the water, avoiding dead zones, and let the nutriments get to the plants. When the tank is mature, (after about 6 months), it's possible not to have water changes during a pretty long period. Before this, I do water changes of about 5 or 10% weekly (it depends on the species). We use nearly the same method in DSB or Jaubert marine tanks. During summer, I put my fishes in container as well (80, 200, 300 liters), with pouzzolane and a lot of floating plants. I prepare it in february (sorry but i live in France. I duknow which month is the end of winter in nz  The temperature has to be about 10°C). Micro fauna, mosquito larvas and a lot of worms can prosperate and then, during summer, my fishes eat only alive foods. Last year, some of my fishes stay from june to october in the containers. I didn't feed them, didn't make any water change (just rain) and there was no filter, no pump, no heater. And some of them breed, like pseudomugil furcata. I try to find photos I took if you're interested. If I'm not clear, feel free to ask me. First time i explain it in english
  6. I didn't see any Shrimps section in the Specialist corner of FNZAS forum. Don't you have any in NZ ?...
  7. It's a Jinlong tank I guess. I got two of them but for freshwater. Price seems to me OK. You have to ask about lighting power (modified or not). About equipment, what about Jaubert or DSB method ? You can it setup without spending a lot of money this way. This tank got 53 cm of depht. It's a bit high for T5 (better with metal halide bulbs). But with a DSB, you can put a good sand layer and T5 will be OK. Is it possible for you to take natural sea water near christchurch ? Another way to save money if the water quality is good.
  8. I also put nymphoide aquatica (banana lily). Annulatus appreciate being under its leave One of the nymphea leave out of the tank
  9. Thanks a lot flatfish One of the red cherry in that tank Baby shrimp Snail on a oak leave

  11. Under blue light, zoanthus appears with a real nice pink/orange edging. But I unfortunatly can't shoot it. It doesn't appears on the picture.
  12. Thanks dreadbunny I did it with white paper sheet and blue LEDs backlight (2.7w) The real colors (I mean colors I can see in front of the tank, cause I can't get it on the picture :-? ) is a kind of fluorescent yellow for the discosoma. Under 6500K or 10.000 K lighting, it appears blue-green. The same under 10.000K CFL lamp Under a blue / white CFL lamp
  13. I hope so Yes, I got aplocheilichtys normanii too. Very nice blue eyes too.
  14. The five females under lemna minor carpet (lot of micro faunas in the floating plant roots and thoses fishes likes them for breeding) Male under salvinia
  15. Discosomas The same under blue light (450 nm LED)
  16. Dimensions : 50 x 20 x 25 cm (L x h x d) Volume : 25 liters 2 x 6500K fluorescent bulbs (2x13w) Heater : newatino 10 w No filter Water changes : weekly, about 10 % Plants: Eleocharis, HC, micranthemum umbrosum, java fern, pistia, lemna minor, salvinia, azolla, lilaeopsis nova zelandae (yep ! ) Two driftwoods, oak and catappa leaves. 17. Hi everyone, Here's my killies tank with 6 pseudepiplatys annulatus.
  18. Hi Skip Yes, it's the water flow. You have to use a special pump like this one, for instance: Large flow, low power consumption (under 5w). Check there is no dead zone. The water must circulate all around your live rocks. It oxygenates your tank, the bacteriums and avoid the accumulation of pollutants. With the pump, try to create some backwashes. It helps also to break that kinda oily film on the water surface (duknow the exact word in english...). A lot of informations here
  19. An interested link about it : - Plants for Brackish Water Systems By Bob Fenner
  20. Hi, I'm also interested in brackish water. Here's a list of plants that could grow in it : Anubias sp (particularly A. barteri and A. congensis) Bacopa monnieri Cabomba Ceratophyllum demersum Ceratopteris cornuta Crinum thaianum (not more than 1005) Crinum calamistratum, pedunculatum Cryptocoryne ciliata Cryptocoryne wendtii (not more than 1005) Echinodorus tenellus (even with strong density) Eichhornia crassipes Eleocharis acicularis Elodea Hygrophyla spp (un pH alcalin favorise les carences en fer, donc les chloroses) Lilaeopsis brasiliensis (not more than 1005, lot of light, rich soil) Microsorium pteropus, Myriophyllum spp Pistia stratiotes Potamogeton crispus, perfoliatus, Ranunculus limosella Sagittaria platiphylla Sagittaria subulata Vallisneria americana, asiatica, gigantea (not more than 1005, but they don't grow very much) Vesicularia dubyana. Acclimatization to salt must be very progressive. Hope it can helps you
