  1. We used to buy them from the pet shop for $10 but I would expect they are more like $30 - $40 if you can find one. They used to be used when heaters and thermostats were 2 separate bits of equipment but went out of style once heaterstats came on the market.
  2. I don't think anyone in here gets bored with other people's fish pics.
  3. Depends on the size of the fish. You will get a lot of algae growth on the glass and keep an eye on water evaporation. It is amazing how fast it evaporates in the sun! As inside, make sure the base is stable and level. Of course, cracks on an outside tank are not as costly as having a tank crack when inside.
  4. Silver dollars grow very large and rip all plants to shreds.
  5. Hi Fay. You have several choices depending on whether you are able to attend meetings. If not, choose a club with a good, informative, regular newsletter. Hamilton has the Waikato Aquarium Soc. Not sure about their newsletter as I do not get one. Contact Rob from in here as he is the president. Auckland has a choice of 3 clubs; Auckland Fishkeepers; sec is Piet [email protected]. They have a good colour newsletter. North Shore Aquarium Soc; contact Kim in here as she is their president. Don't know anything about their newsletter either. Sth Auckland Aq & Watergarden Soc; meet occasionally for dinner I understand and do not have a newsletter. There is a group of marine keepers in Auckland who have met a couple of times and talk about starting an official club but not sure how far along they are with that. They send out the occasional newsletter. They are not affiliated with the FNZAS at this point. If you are unable to attend meetings but wish to be affiliated to the FNZAS to get the Aquarium World magazine etc. you could join the NZKA (NZ Killifish Assoc) as they are postal only but specialise in killifish. My own club, Marlborough Aquarium Club, has members from around NZ (and overseas) and we have a full colour newsletter too. The choice is yours. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.
  6. Well I hope it doesn't grow to 260mm!!!

    Welcome aboard critters
  8. Most fly sprays use pyrethrum. I spray for flies at the opposite end of the room to my tank and don't have any problems but my tank is well covered too. If you have external pumps (like you attach to box and ugf's) they can suck the stuff in through their vents underneath. Can you get one of the auto things for a trial? Make sure it is as far away from the tank as possible. For the amount of flies he has Shae I don't think a room with venus fly traps on every surface could keep up with the numbers! They are a cool plant though.

Plain silver or black does not indicate a more 'pure' strain than the marbled varieties.
  10. The bigger the fish the more we get attached. Sorry Ira

Put the peat in some old pantyhose
  12. I also meant to say I buy wallpaper scrapers for getting algae off the glass. They have nice wide blades in them and a handle so are easier to use than razor blades. You can also buy them in packs in some $2 shops or they go on special for $1 each in Mitre 10 when they have their big sales.

That's why I have left things alone. Late afternoon and they are still guarding. I am feeding a little more to the others in the hopes they lose interest in the eggs.

They are still guarding eggs this morning. I am leaving the lights on 24hrs so they aren't fighting off raiders in the dark.
  15. but he did it himself!

I agree with Fay. We want pics NOW Warren

    Very nice! Thanks for persevering
  18. I wondered what was going on at one end of the tank and discovered these 2 angels... have had a thing going and have laid eggs on the internal Shark filter They won't last long as I haven't taken the 10 rosy barbs out yet so I doubt there will be any fry. I know I could remove the filter and raise them artificially but I am all for letting the parents do it. They might spawn again after I have taken the barbs out. Besides, I really don't need a whole lot of angels!
  19. gonowillie      Good word Alan! They are both of the Poeciliidae family and look very similar in shape to a guppy.
  20. I can't remember suphew. I think it was to do with the thickness of them and uneven surface causing stress on the tank. Under a waterbed bladder isn't a problem as it is so flexible. They are also possibly harder to keep the temperature correct.
  21. I don't see why a heatpad should be more expensive to run as heat rises. I have emailed you Shae. Can't say I have ever noticed an extra cost on my power bill for the tanks but I only have 2 4ft tanks running with 4 double flouros in a well insulated house.
  22. Got it going thanks Warren
  23. Ahh but the fish are worth it aren't they?
  24. I would imagine most people with a 17" CRT or 15" LCD will be running at 1024 x 768. Probably the most common setting these days. Those lucky enough to have a larger monitor will be running at a higher resolution. However, for pics posted on the web, we always resize to 640 x 480 for the pic size. This minimises download time without making them too small to see with good resolution on the screen. For those with dial-up connections the download time is most important. Also pics that size, when sent as email attachments, display nicely within the message so you don't have to scroll to see the whole image.

Diverjohn it is common for plants to develop a brown algae as a new tank matures. Do what you have been, cut off the yucky leaves (highly technical fish keeping term ) as the new ones grow. The brown algae should eventually disappear over time once the plants establish themselves.
