Thanks Dennis So you don't dig the gravel vac in you just hold it above the pooh and leftover food on the sand. I might consider that, sounds like it could save time on cleaning as well. Won't it go in my filter though if my bristlenose male goes digging, he loves digging under his log.

Hi all, I would like to change my fruitsalad gravel to something else, I have seen a nice looking gravel on trade me called Midnight gravel and thought it would look great. However it is very fine, (not pebble like) almost like sand. How would a person go about cleaning that, won't the gravel vac suck it out of the tank when I do a clean up? I want to go darker, cause many of you told me it would look better and that it would bring the colour of all my pleco's out more. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Awww BikBok he is the cutest little thing under the sun We really need a smilley with little hearts around it, that would express your little fellow much better. I must remember to take pics while they float in the bag, I never think of it and once they are in the tank they go in hiding for days before they settle :-?

We are on tank water here in Beachlands so I have no worries as well, but I do have a carbon filter which on a tap in the kitchen and I only use the water from there, just incase

Yes and you know what :bounce: I am gonna get two of the something else as well. Hubby promised me that I would get them either next month or the month after. He wants them to be old enough to sex before he buys them I am over the moon excited :bounce: THanks so much for the info, I am currently feeding them hikari algae wafers and nutrifin protein tablets. And I think they might have assisted my bristlenoses with the zuchini cause it was polished off over night
-
You got one too :bounce: They are the cutest, and my bristlenose male is such a gentleman, he shares everything with them no fights or squabbles Can't wait to see your photo. Mine was all pale the day before yesterday when i got them, poor things did not like the half an hour trip back home in the car, though I covered them with a dark jacket (I was freezing LOL) the whole trip home But as you can see their colour is much darker today

Here is a pic of one of my zebra chockies. Sorry about the quality of the pic, but this little guy was hiding all the way at the end of a log tunnel I am so excited that i got them, there is two, the other one is hiding right under the bogwood, can't get a pic of him, could only see his tail fins. I have waited long enough for them, and just wanted to share with you guys, any info on bringing these up successfully will be appreciated as well

Wow that is very informative, I love that site thans John and Purplecatfish for putting it up. I saved it as a favourite. I will deffinetly warn her about it being toxic, since she said she wanted to try the blackout method first, she did say she will try and remove of much of it as she can, and even thow out her plastic plants and certain rocks that have rough surfaces, but I will suggest she do the blackout without her fish, I can always give her some of my tankwater to house her fish in while she does it. Oops, I did not use gloves and I even washed my hands in it to make double sure I don't have anything on my hands, since I touched the cynobacteria  Thanks for this alanmin, I will pass that info over to her this morning. She said I must say thanks to all you guys for the help.

thanks John, I will let her know this tomorrow

I might have gone a bit over the top, but what I did was the following. I had a spare sachet of furan 2. So I mixed it in water in a bucket and soaked my test tubes with their lids in there. I also did quick dips with the actual laminated cards into the water before drying them with papertowels. I also washed my container with my testbottles and everything I basically touched. My tank is in good running order and I was scared that I would get the bluegreen algae so I might have gone OTT but atleast I know I will deffinetly not get it in my tank.
-
The tubes are glass, but the little lid is plastic. I will boil the tubes and bleach the lids and tubes and then soak them all in freshwater twice. Thank goodness I did my check with yesterday's waterchange, so I have a week left to wash and scrub them before I use them again
-
Oh No With what will you suggest I wash my test tubes, thanks so much for that comment else I would not have thought of it, I just rinsed them under water as I usually do. :-?

I am to weary since my tank is algae free and crystal clear. I have a 20 litre glass tank she may borrow for her fish, I will wash and dry it in the sun for days when she returns it. I will pass all of this information onto her tomorrow at school. Thanks for all your help. Shame she just cleaned it all out, but some must have survived somewhere cause what you see in the pic grew in only one week

Oh wow guys this sounds nasty Will she be better off to put all her fish in quaranteen and completely scrubbing that tank and then treat it with the antibiotics without the fish, will I be able to house her fish in my tank? They are compatable, but the last thing I want is that bacteria in my tank, gosh I just got my two little chocolate zebra's today, can't let that happen. I might borrow her my quaranteen tank if she does not have one herself. What should se then wash it with? Shame she tought it was just an algae, this is quite serious :-? Damn I better check my facebook privacy again as well, I also recently updated it  They keep on changing the privacy

Hi all, I have a friend and she battles with this weird algae, I have never seen it before. I went over to her house armed with my testing kit hoping we can find something wrong but all her parameters were perfect. Her fish are all alive and thriving including two little bristlenose babies I gave her However she has this weird algae problem. She did an almost 60% water change cleaning her gravel and stones in her tank carefully but a week later it was all covered in a blanket of algae again. The algae is a very bright greenblueish colour. It does not have a fishy or even bad smell to it, infact it smells like good quality soil (sand in the garden) would after a days rain. It looks silky while covering rocks and so on, but once you touch it to lift it out it becomes stringy and breaks to pieces. She does have an outside pond with goldfish and occasionally she would catch some and keep them in their until their owners come to fetch them, so its possible this could be a pond algae issue as well. Just thought I would add that info there for you guys as well. I tried to take a pic, but could not take a clear pic so took a video clip instead which I am hosting on photobucket. If you need any more information just ask and I can ask her, or might be able to answer it now if its something I might know. I attach the video and also a still pic I took of the video for you guys to check out and advice us of what to do http://s265.photobucket.com/albums/ii23 ... salgae.flv (video link above)

Wow Just me being nosy, but do you have to remove all your big rocks as well for the waterchange. I want to make myself a beautiful pleco tank soon, so will have lots of hiding places in forms of rocks and tunnels, I never know whether I must always remove everything or not
-
I always see these amazing tanks of you guys and have to wonder how you manage to do the gravel vacs in a tank like that. Mine consists of gravel and plastic plants which I can take out and wash and then gravel vac. But I would love to have an amazing tank like that one day.

Are you a cat. Cats have nine lifes and you are living your one life now and have eight left unless you lose one life.
-
won't they fight with all the testerone in the tank and no way to release it? I do love all the different male pleco's but not sure if it will work having six males of the schools I currently have. Great idea though, wish it was possible LOL I am not english speaking so the title might have been misleading LOL My fish are all together including danio's must be another member I am thinking of getting a loving house for my three (one male and two females) platty/swortail fish. They are much bigger than my small schooling fish too.
-
Would love one, a huge one and then get lots and lots of pleco type fish That is my biggest problem now, I might take the bigger sword babies to Animates. I think I might just let the circle of life happen in my tank, will keep the lights off to give them a bigger chance of surviving and it will make it difficult for the kids to see them being chomped up. My five year old daughter is in tears as she saw the one being eaten and then spit out dead. Guess it was not tasting good enough for the danio :-?
-
My fish are having so much babies I can't keep up. I have a nursery tank that is full of fry, well over 60 its got swordtail fry in it from two females that had babies, just before them I had well over 80 bristlenose fry as well, now it looks as if my danio's (must be them because the mollies, glasscatfish, cherriebarbs and harlequins are still very small) had fry. I have no idea what to do anymore, the kids get very upset when the fry gets eaten by the other fish so I always rescue them, but my nursery is getting fuller and fuller. For a beginner I guess I am doing something right if they are popping fry so often LOL, they are worse than mice (had them as a child) Do you guys suggest I just let the circle of life take place or keep on trying to rescue them? Gosh I never knew fish had so much babies the whole time
-
Thanks so much for that information everyone I have taken it to heart and will consider getting six little cherrie barbs for my tank
-
I am sorry if you guys did not understand my question above. Reasontly I told you guys about my longfin danio's that are sickly and many said it was because of breeding that they were sickly, and you guys suggested to rather get the shortfin danio's in future since they are bred better. Now I would just like to know if cherrie barbs are the same. Are they overbred or will they make good tank mates for the rest of my fish?
-
Hi there, I have read what I could on the web about cherrie barbs and they seem to be fine for my tank. However I thought that longfin zebra danio's would be great and they turned out very sickly dying for no reason while my other fish thrived. So I would like to hear your opinions whether cherrie barbs are good breeds or whether they are bred so bad like the longfin danio's that they give more problems than pleasure. Hope my questions make sense, english is not my first language so please excuse the grammar and spelling

I have three black lyretail mollies (still young) and they love algae, my poor bn has to hurry to get a hold of algae in the tank. They even peck at me while I clean the tank LOL. It is interesting to see them peck at the glass eating algae and they love pecking at the algae on the heater's suckers.
