  1. I had some JBL balls in there when the tank started (see original thread) but haven't replaced any. Have used flourish excel fertiliser maybe once a month or less/more at random. There isn't any reason why you couldn't have a big low tech tank (I have small tanks as my house is small) but I guess you'd need a lot more plants to start off as they don't grow super fast like a high tech tank.
  2. it was quite grown out and then I melted the crypts :an!gry http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=48110&start=90
  3. Poor Grant. First you make him chuck all his treasure in a skip, then you make him chop off his crowning glory and THEN smile for the camera for some Fish Heads he probably barely even knows. :rotf:
  4. No because until I heard Neon's external filter on a big tank recently I had the idea they would be noisy like an airpump or a hang on the back variety. I haven't ever seen a small external one in action, but is something to look into one day. I will store your suggestion in my memory bank as I'd rather have a plant there. Squirt, tank is about 51cm long by 28cm high and 30cm deep - from memory and not measuring it. It was the longest we could fit on a particular piece of wall so had it made. The filter is Eheim Pickup 2006, lighting is now an over 1 year old 14000K sensen that I scored at a petshop closing down, 8 watts I think and the lights are on about 6 hours a day only. No Co2, it's a low tech tank. It's so low tech I'm freaking out a bit about this quite rapid growing new plant. I'm hoping it uses up whatever fertiliser it can find and then slows down like the other plants :sml2: thanks for the compliments
  5. good idea You could also put a layer of mud in the bottom, shine a really bright from above, stick one of those dead antelopes on the wall next to them, and then pull the plug out during summer to simulate their natural habitat :rotf: :digH: Natural Habitat Consultancy fees = 1 muffin :happy1:
  6. I think part of the reason why the beard seems more flattering is because his hair is thick and wavy, so the beard creates balance when viewing from the front as we are. If it were cut more closely to his head, at least around the back and sides then the clean shaven look may fit him better. (That is not a hint for you to now nag him about his hairstyle! :nilly: )

    The What's Up? thread.

You are obviously not the failed fishkeeper you thought you were the other day :sage:
  8. I think they would be OK as the other fish you are thinking of are bigger than them and fast moving. I never actually saw them being aggressive to the fighter but he was fine before they arrived. They are mostly only interested in live food in the actual water column, they don't even go for sinking tiny fish pellets or other dried food I fire in with a dropper. I suspect they'd have a nibble of a bottom feeder type pellet if they found some, but haven't really noticed as I don't use that sort of food in this tank.
  9. He should only keep the beard off if you are going to give him more kisses than before and thus encourage him to keep a smooth face. Otherwise I think the goatee is more flattering than the beard. I think he suits facial hair either way though.
  10. will be interesting to watch and see what it does then thanks
  11. this weekend I will choose a different treat. Last weekend's muffin has put me off for some time
  12. There are definitely bloodworms in there but I don't see them unless they come out to sunbathe, if you can call it that. If I take one out and put it in a jar do you know how long it would take to hatch?
  13. For less than the cost of the skip I would have come to visit with a shovel and pushed it all to the side for you just like that :rotf: You could have paid me with a Countdown muffin (white chocolate and blueberry) !drool:
  14. another update, with new swordplant parviflorus variety. Yesterday and today I saw a scarlet badis coming up to feed with the CPDs for microworms, earlier 'he' came up to feed but when discovered it was flake food went elsewhere to hunt instead. He knows good food comes from above after yesterdays worms and previous days' mosquito treats. :gigl:
  15. thanks Alan, I will let it grow. The fish will like to chomp on the stuff that is bound to collect on it, badis especially. is this an emersed or submersed kind? here is ol' Parvi - root off to the right
  16. It's official, I am not losing it. Measured the root this morning before work and it was about an inch long, after work it's now an inch and a half.... shall I chop off the stalk and let it grow elsewhere so the main plant can get established or is this not going to matter? I fear I may have bought a monster plant for my little low tech tank

    P44, I am part of the 90% in point 2 :sml2:
  18. I think of Henward feeding a frog to the fish and then I think of Insect Direct's photo of the little male frog on the other female frog's back and think awwwww noooo! but I also chop live worms for my fish 8)

I got it! Do another one Josh :bounce:
  20. I will check it tomorrow afternoon and then I will know if I'm losing my marbles or not :roey:
  21. I thought that too but nope, I had these before I had snails. They aren't freshwater limpet eggs either as I have limpets in my planted tank but none of these dotty things :dunno:
  22. I found a parviflorus sword today about fist size and planted it around noon. It has a stem with a plantlet attached and I could swear that the plantlet already put out a 3cm root. Is that possible or am I seeing things?
  23. There are usually at least one of these in my bugs pond at all times but yesterday I found a few of them. They are made of lots of tiny dots and are formed as a tube. They are hanging from a wisp of some sort of web from some decaying leaves on the top of the pond. I've always wondered what they are - does anyone know?
  24. Cool I think Joe has literally captured images from inside a dog's brain. Those gold squiggles are when a human opens the fridge, the white bouncing ball type ones are when you see the whiskers twitching during a dream. The rest is blackness ....
