  1. The best way to breed peacocks is to have 1m & 3 to 4 females. When buying any cichlid from africa, get the location; especially with peacocks... Safer way of buying & you are more likely to get what you are after. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/a_masoni.php (masoni) Frenchy
  2. A "friend" of the shop took some pics http://www.drumpak.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=957 Frenchy
  3. Thats cheap, retail here is $1000 Aussie dollars each. I was lucky enough to see 6, for 2 days all gone to one guy. 8) Frenchy
  4. The good old Burundi 6 bar fronnie goes for $20 each at 3 to 4 cm off a breeder. Retail for $35 to $40... Then again depends on the variant, 7 bar fronnies $90 - $100 retail, sambias $150 retail, (3 to 4 cm) zaire blues, well what ever you are prepaired to pay. These fish are calm, no doubt about it, hard to believe that in the wild they are a pisicivore. 8) Frenchy

  6. Hello Loretta, The cichlids when bigger will probably give the knifefish a hard time. Sexing these; The males head is thicker & larger, The males head is shaped more like a horse head than the females. The males eyes are more towards the top of the head. The females eyes are lower down, & to the front of its head, close to the mouth. If you grow up a group together the males are quicker growing, & tend to get to a larger size. Hope this helps.. 7. I've seen chinese algae eaters attack fish before, if not then maybe its the red tail shark. frenchy
  8. bummer, sorry for getting your hopes up :-? Frenchy
  9. You can try placing a piece of lettuce in the tank just before lights out. Come back in an hour or 2 & pull the lettuce out, should be plenty of them on the there. Or you could try a Anomalochromis thomasi they are pretty friendly for a cichlid & eat more snails than a clown loach will. We use them at work, even with the tropicals, they get nice & fat real quick. Frenchy
  10. what u have the texas & convicts in with the ghost knifes???? ps; I have seen a ghostie at 50cm. There have been a few people here to breed them if anyone wants any info. Let me know. frenchy

  13. What type of Red Heads are they??? :-? common names vary from lfs to lfs, town to town country to country. Do you mean Geophagus steindachnari?? They are a mouth brooder. Males get more colouration, espeacially the red in the head. Males also get bigger , & have a hump on there head. Hope this helps, usually you can tell males & females when together in the tank. Frenchy
  14. ps; try & add more feamles, check they are same species help spread any excess agression, & also get you more action Frenchy
  15. I usually strip at 14 days, they are free swimming & big enough to eat baby brine shrimp. Stripping is easy once you have done it a couple of times. I usually raise fry in a breeders net/or homemade container, for a few weeks then raise them in a seperate 2 foot tank, with the same water from the parents tank. What type of Jacobs are they?? Stripping; Catch female with as little strees as you can, I use 2 nets. Hold female(wet hands) in bucket with water from main tank, using a tooth pick or match stick, (using the flat part not the point), push down gentle on the bottom lip to hold mouth open. gentle rock female back & forth. You will see the free swimmers come out of her mouth. continue till all are out. Keep fry in a breeders net in parents tank, or if you have an empty tank place em in there with water from parents tank. If you strip at 1 week fry will be head & tails with egg sack, I like to leave to 2 weeks, they are free swimming, easier to care for. Frenchy
  16. If you can get a hold of an Aqualex cd, or something similar you will see that there are 50 plus different pseudotropheus. We have about 15 different types at the moment where I work. When buying cichlids, get Genus, species & location, & if you arent sure I'd check out photos of them first before buying. With Malawis most are mouth brooders, best in colonies(6 to 10) so dominant male won't be to "dominant". Nice sized tank 3 foot plus. or ypou can go 4 foot with 2 to 3 different species. Just make sure to mix & match with different genus, colours... this prevents to much in fighting & cross breeding. Frenchy
  17. Try & add 3 or more females, help spread any aggression. What size is the tank?? Frenchy
  18. The price retail here on A.compressiceps here are about $30, Gold heads can be picked up for $35.. there are about 10 species/variants of Altos here ranging in price up to about $120 each. I think $30 is a good price, try to raise fry. :-? Takes 6 months to grow the babies up to 3cm. Cool fish the way they hunt pray. I feed guppy babies to mine. Frenchy
  19. Do yous have Altolamprologus either compressiceps or calvus, or what about Julidochromis. There are some Shell dwellers too like Neolamprologus ocellatus, Neolamprologus have alot of species, lelupi, brichardi.....though like any cichlid if a pair bond occurs, they will want a territory. Frenchy
  20. Yeah I'd go for a 4 footer with a mixture of African cichlids. Mix up the genus & colours & you should be right Frenchy
  21. Make sure you wrap up, bit of a change from Queensland, & on your way back I'll have..... frenchy
  22. Hes sweet looking, has anyone noticed how an albino convict has normal eyes yet alot of other albino fish species have red eyes?? David, try feeding the convict babies to the others at a slightly smaller size. Frenchy
  23. Probably better off going a colony of electric blues, yelows or peacocks. 1 to 2 males & 3 or 4 girls. Or if you want for a display. :-? If you can filter the tank well go for a mixture, hard to tell how many as it depends on how they get along. 5 to 8...As a rule 1 peacock(Aulonocara), 1 of the Zebra family, then mix & match colours. Dont go for venustus or similar grwo to big. or go for a pair of medium to small american, eg; salvinis Frenchy
