I've found fine sand from Mitre10 Mega (usually the outdoor/gardening section) is a natural brown colour.

Down at my local ponds (Totara Park) DoC has authorized the release of grass carp for (what I believe) is the control of water weeds.

If you don't have a container you can put the young in where others fish can't get to them and they can't escape, float an ice cream container full of tank water inside the main tank. You need to keep the fry away from all other fish or else they WILL be eaten. Good luck.
