  1. well with what happened to Tequila last year we are definately making sure they get enough calcium with EVERYTHING lol so yeah basically calcium caked with more calcium lol
  2. haha we wanted the authentic uneven break patterns with the earthy cliff background so we hand ripped the polystyrene pieces..took all summer!
  3. well here's the completed the background and they're still fine, at 4 months:
  4. they've settled down a bit, everybody takes their turn laying eggs and others come and eat it - seems to be the routine now, the token male always go dark in colour when anyone's laying.
  5. thanks Flosty - well I thought it's good for a planted tank effort anyway haha
  6. the photo of them in the 2nd and 3rd is their feeding tank not the main tank, but their main tank is plenty enough - info from american+australian beardy keeping sites said you only need a 4foot tank for 3 adult beardys (x2/3 Babies: 10-20mm (3-5”) Use 24x15x15”, x2/3 Juveniles: 180-255mm (7-10”) Use 36x24x24, x2 Sub/Adults: 330-610mm (13-24”) Use 48x24x24) and we've got a 5footer with plenty of vertical climbing space too so we're not worried about that
  7. by wee man do you mean Tequila? Unfortunately Tequila never recovered from his broken back the vets told us he most likely wouldn't so we were prepared, he passed away at the end of Nov.. These guys are pretty good with their veges and are really well handled, two of them (Spyro and Houdinni) came with missing digits (toes) and Speedy had a missing tail tip but haven't ever seen them fight in our enclosure, the enclosure they're going in is 5x2x2 and the background has really well spaced out perches (3 perches) and two well spaced out caves (one in the tree stump and one in the cave) so it gives plenty of hiding spots.
  8. and this is the background I made over summer for their enclosure: ignore the dog that wouldn't stay out of the camera range
  9. We have had these guys for a little over one month now, they are so much fun to keep and it's interesting to see the hierarchy that's established within our three little boys: When we first got them: Feb And now sitting on the same barrel ornament: March little fatties after a hearty feeding session, feedings are always monitored when bugs are concerned to prevent injuries.
  10. here are all my females: think the ones I got from Ron (are all almost 2yrs? correct me if I'm wrong) the female turq: female LSS and turq: group shot of all my females - the pigeonblood checkerboard's cut off though: the male seems to pair up with whoever's laying? he goes all dark, doesn't seem to be exclusive to just his mate.
  11. I've often thought about selling that pair but I love the female too much to let her go, if I sold the male so it's all females + 1 unknown will that reduce the intensity of the fighting? Or I could heavily plant the tank again to create more hiding spots or downsize the population? Ron - 4 out of the 5 Discus I got from you are all females! (the leopard ss, the turq, the pigeon and the snow white) with one pigeon unknown still.
  12. I have one pair that have established themselves as the 'top' in the pecking order, now over the last two months I've had 4 females laying eggs on their own and I'm finding that they're fighting A LOT now (Like biting each other's lips and ramming each other etc), will it help if I got rid of the only male?
  13. when they have a better diet than myself
  14. I was surprised when I saw the heading, I got excited when I saw the title 'ocean green' but let down when I saw the actual discus..
  15. Phoenix can you transfer to the Wellington or Lower Hutt Animates PLEASE??
  16. lol I know that's why I named her 'The Beast' lol that's everyone's reaction when they see my tank they point her out, guess the daily wc's paid off. I wish the others kept up though! Am looking at upsizing Discus tank next time mum goes on holiday Haven't separated the pair out of the main tank yet, will sell off one of my new display tanks to get a 4/5 foot tank built for breeding them
  17. there is no gravel in the tank - the 3 Corys died the same night they were brought home then the following night I lost my whiptail and a platy..a 50% wc was done the morning before the Cories arrived, could it something else? it practically happened overnight
  18. are these the pigeonblood checkerboards you got off Ron Flosty? Congrats! My LSS I got off Ron's a whopper at 15cm (girl) now has paired with a smaller (12cm) Alenquer boy - fingers crossed mine will raise their own fry too
  19. dam...why doesn't wellington have stores like that :-? the cheapest substrate I found at the LPS was a 14L bag of small dark gravel for $50 or a small bag of black flourite for $100...which I'll need quite a few bags of. Paekakboyz - do you know what they were selling the pebbles at by any chance?
  20. By cull hard - how do I select from a young age?
  21. peer pressure lol..Okay sounds feasible, I will give it a try. I think I've figured out a faster way at waterchanges now..what foods should I have prepared for frys? I take it they'll be too small for bloodworms and granules
  22. I'm in wellington, the shipping costs doesn't make it worth it.. Can anyone tell me if that Dalton's propagation mix is easy to clean?
  23. Can anyone tell me what does it mean if my fish are getting white lips then dying? Have so far lost 3 cories, 1 whiptail cat and a platy.. I've noticed they get white lips, then slow down and become unactive then usually dead by the morning. Other fish include 7 angels which are fine Thanks heaps
  24. I have a spare 80cm L x 90cm h x 50cm w tank, but that's not going to be big enough to grow the juvies out, will it? I'm stuck in a situation - I don't want to sell my adults since they're among my favs in the tank, but worried that they'll pick on others more as they want to breed, there's really no way to stop them from wanting to breed is there?
