  1. Thanks Sandysme - decided against getting anymore lol wanted to give shellies a try for a while now. Thanks for the offer anyway
  2. I lost one (with bad fins) I got off the trader Fishheaven, the second from a different breeder. They're just a weak strain, too inbred is my guess Now am in search of more blue coloured Discus...colbolts may be an option.
  3. thanks Ron, I think you're right, might be down to bad breeding
  4. Ryan - Dam I can't get up to Bulls though, we don't have a car at the moment I should give these discus a miss so I can free up this tank for those shellies of yours I might have to wait for your next lot, still have a couple 2/3cm discus in there to grow out, then I'll PM you once I get my tank up and running. Do you think I can shorten the cycling if I use the water from the discus and just add some limestones etc to up the pH?
  5. Hey, I'm looking at some juvenile Discus but trader won't send, wondering if anyone up in AKL is able to send these fish to me, I'll pay for postage and packaging, preferably someone that lives near Three Kings? Thank you
  6. wow that is awesome! A step by step would also be appreciated how often do you change the water?
  7. First blue diamond was around 5 months old, it was a piggy, noticed it going dark in colour and always fat, fine until one day found it floating with fungal growth on half its body, died overnight. I put it down to blockage. Then today, fuse blew in the house and lost power to my grow - out tank for a couple of hours (was out at work), tank temp only dropped about 5/6 deg cel, found my 3 months old blue diamond dead with fungal growth on one side of body. I don't know whether it's the stress caused by the power outage or if it's connected to the death a week before, it did seem to go dark in colour this morning but otherwise nothing else wrong. There's four more fish in the same tank but they seem fine? I don't know what it is and not too sure what I should treat my tank with to prevent anymore losses.
  8. Yeah thanks to Zev recommending us to go visit Wonderworld earlier this year...went home $300 poorer later :-? wasn't even planned lol
  9. you add ox heart, white fish, salmon, prawns, garlic, spinach, some flake food and peas to the mixture brings out the best colours
  10. You should hold back on bloodworms - a bit too fatty, they need a high protein diet so just starve them. How many times do you feed them per day? I feed them 4/5times a day: 3 x colourbits 1/2 x beef heart and bloodworms every third night.
  11. Definitely agree with that Lucky (our dog) was lucky that he didn't get his eyes scratched out
  12. Yay Anna, when you get yours working properly, you can pop down to my place and help me build an industrial sized one I WANT A FOREST haha
  13. When we lived on a livestyle farm, our dog (7yo at the time) used to 'herd' feral cats towards our house and leave huge dead rats outside my window - one incident I remember vividly. The tom's screeching in the middle of the night while our old german shepherd x border collie just layed infront of it and watched it lol and moving to block the cat from running :-? then the fricken cat launched itself at my dog who was quite surprised but managed to bite down on the cat and throw it off, bit of orange fur everywhere and cat disappeared. Then we checked the dog for bites or scratched and he was scotch clean thank god
  14. paying for liscences every year for the hobby could be a financial gain and be re-invested into conservation NZ? I can see both the sides with a 'threat' to our ecosystem - ie. purposeful/accidental releases etc etc they drilled this into us in all the ecology papers at uni that you just cannot predict how a foreign organism will respond to a new environment, it could go either way. But the problem stands that the powers who control this are too outdated, if they were smart they could use this hobby to help with New Zealand's conservation programs IMO anyways.
  15. Houdinni and Spyro - when younger: Houdinni, Spyro and Speedy Gonzales - older: Speedy - lately:
  16. Yeah fish that size are tricky to dispose since they won't fit down the loo, I had to chuck a huge Snow white into the bin it was a DOA due to sloppy courier service. Found a 6cm Blue Diamond dead this morning (had it at 2cm)..ate too much bloodworms last night and must have got bloated badly it was always a piggy
  17. Put some salt to destress them and maybe a big waterchange would be good
  18. Oh that's so sad at least you did as much as you possibly could
  19. Are you for real Lyndyloo??? Once you get them, they breed like no tomorrow...I don't even know how they got introduced to my tank, was absolutely guttered. I've resorted to scooping up the top layer and picking the snails out of my substrate easily fill cups of these guys, the 16 loaches aren't doing much
  20. photo time then? don't forget the angels and their babies!
  21. You'll definitely have to order them from your local petshop - don't think anyone's been able to breed them in captivity yet :-? my 10 set me back $160 with fish club discounts Plenty of silica sand/more coarse sand (if you're worried about currents) and wood and plants and they'll be right at home!
  22. I just saw your thread....LUCKY! Good luck with the physics of it all :-? hope it's strong enough, substrate etc rocks/wood would also add to the weight and also the flooring haha. An amazonian display would be epic! Has anyone on the forum got a huge amazonian biotope aquarium?
  23. Get a troop of 20/30 dwarf chain loaches! they are AWESOME when they school
  24. OMG that's awesome that you managed to get them breeding successfully! Are they taking care of their own fry or do you have to separate? PHOTOS :bounce: :bounce: Tried to breed my long-finned angels but absolutely hopeless, ended up selling them they were laying eggs every week.
  25. I'm jealous! I've still gota come over to your place to have a nosey at your tank
