  1. Ours is always crystal clear, heavily feed our discus but also do 60% waterchanges once every 2 days, siphoning everytime. We've got two canister filters (one does 1500L/h while the other 400L/h)...no carbon either just plenty of bio noodles and mesh layer in each.
  2. I've got 10 of these guys and 2 zebra loaches - don't see them touching the malaysian trumpet snails, I've added 4 skunk loaches to tank now, waiting to see if these slightly bigger guys will do the job.
  3. Thought furan 2 would be an overkill? It's not too good for fish either..quite harsh. I'd go with phoenix44's recommendation first - sometimes when I introduce young discus into my tank without a slow acclimatization process they get burns which looks like fin rot?
  4. Hey, I trawled through past post titles but can't seem to find one I thought I had seen before (maybe I was imagining it)..Which non-leaching and quick-drying glue/sticky stuff do people use to stabilise big sized rocks for african display tanks? Preferably clear in colour when dried or similar colour to rocks. Thanks
  5. I've had angels that I used to see with small sized platys sticking out of their mouths
  6. Thanks for the tips guys just holding off at the moment - If we need to move out then might as well do the substrate change with the move and been thinking about getting a new tank made to fit my pre-existing stand but just a good 20/30cm taller so Discus would enjoy it more... :bounce: :bounce: So many options..but will definitely be doing a substrate change, plants seem to propagate better on a finer substrate I find.
  7. I see why people pay in the excess of hundreds for these..really jealous...I don't get why they have to pull them out of the water for photos
  8. Is that what she is? I wasn't sure 'cos I'm pretty sure a breeder from Upper Hutt said he supplied them? Or he did supply Animates anyway
  9. You'll never guess where I found her... Animates and they sold her as a young turq to me, I was really bummed when she didn't end up looking like any turqs I've seen before but I've had her for more than 2years now and she's a real character - didn't start laying eggs until this year.
  10. Right guys, here are two pics - I'm not 100% sure what she is:
  11. I'm not too sure, I remember a certain breeder up in auckland who wanted to buy her off me a couple of years ago though but thought the project was going to be too expensive in the end, will get a picture up by tonight - camera's charging at the moment. She's the oldest Discus in my tank by a couple of years - I'd guestimate her age to be around 4/5 years?
  12. Mine's 100mm+ and it's a she and keeps laying eggs  too bad no male to go with her
  13. that reminds me of the nightmare of trying to get my old skunk loach out from under the undergravel filter took ages and that was just one fish!
  14. could anyone give an indication on how much a CO2 sys usually costs? I'm also wanting to heavily plant my Discus tank and I'm so not keeping up with your technical jargon
  15. my male's lazy, he only hangs around and once all the hard work is done then he joins in  typical....
  16. Tracytrout - are you sure you want to commit to that? it's not going to be easy I know for sure those loaches are going to take forever for me to round them up...I thinking rounding and netting will take the longest and be the hardest. I will let you when I've bought the silica and everything - David's making it sound like a chore  Skippy - oh that would be awesome, which suburb in wellington do you live in? think I may have to put a broadcast and ask for people's chillys for over a weekend
  17. Hey Skippy, thanks that's very helpful - I've got to go buy a couple of chilly bins then have wanted to revamp the tank is SO long!
  18. I'm wanting to pull up my under gravel filter (and replace it with a new filter) and replace all my substrate with silica (5foot tank's worth) - has anyone done a whole substrate change and done it quickly etc? I've got 7 large Discus, 10 dwarf loaches, 4 GBAs and 2 red whips + 1 token SAE to put somewhere during this substrate change as well - any suggestions? Can't put them in bath tub 'cos I will need to use it to refill my tank 1. Do I need to keep both my canisters still running during substrate replacement? 2. How long did this take? 3. where did people put their fish during the substrate change? Did anyone bag all the fish? Thanks heaps
  19. sorry for hijacking thread henward - planning to chuck her up on TM for $120 reserve, she's 80/90mm excl tail
  20. Same here! My Snow white lays every 2/3weeks and I feel so bad for her as all the other MUCH bigger females ram her out of the way to eat her eggs :-? selling her though, too many females and I find that they get scrapy a couple of days before they lay - they all have their own layign spots it's quite funny
  21. I have trouble with grating - when you grate do you grate it frozen? it seems to be quite big strips still though? that's sort of why I just puree everything together lol
