    hi all..

hey well come! what kind of fish are you keeping?
  2. My Molly ate A LOT of my other plants too...

Name: Amy Age: 20 Occupation: Uni student (Bsc - majoring in Biology) Music: Alternative, Rock, 80's, hardhouse, some techno...sometimes tolerate Pop.... Interests: BEACH, shopping, getting my hair done, pampering my little pooch - who also likes to get her hair done , snowboarding... Been keeping goldfish since I was 9 and only started tropicals last year.
  4. at this moment can only be definate there is one boy and one girl - the rest are still unsexable (5cm including tail), but I definately cant put my boy GBA into the same tank as the brown bristlenose (both boys and same size 9cm), the brown one gives it a good beating that's for sure. could it be that my male is frustrated?? since the only girl avoids him and the rest are too young?
  5. where did you get your driftwood from? do you have a lid on your tank? I had a small tank growing out some babies when I realised that because of the lack of the lid all the dust was getting in. Also - has your driftwood been cleaned thoroughly?
  6. I had a staff from a petshop trying to sell me Cichlids that he a week ago told me were semi-aggressive and then telling me that they were not aggressive at all...hmmm left empty handed + VERY confused
  7. I've run out of tanks there's an even grumpier + bigger normal/brown male bristlenose in my smaller tank, he got added to the larger tank because he and the other used to fight ALL the time
  8. hahahaha are you talking about Oriental Parade? ALSO - Vindy500; how do you prevent the rocks from falling down in your tank? Did you need to strengthen your flooring foundations when you added those rocks into your tank? Im tempted to set up a African cichlid display but worried about al these structural probs
  9. I've provided caves, driftwood with big gaps etc for them to hide - he doesn't seem interested in the cave at all...he's too busy chasing others from which ever plane of the glass he's on, the dominant male's around the 8/9cm mark and the others range from 4-6cm (but these aren't sexable yet) - the dominant male has the largest chunk out of all the tails missing, the smaller ones only have slight tears.
  10. ok thanks for that, but how often do you feed your older Discus? I change the water a lot (tri-weekly 20% each time) because I always feed them a little bit more - to make sure all 8 get some food.
  11. How big do GBAs have to reach before they're a good size for breeding? Also - are they usually territorial? I have 5 GBAs in my 6' tank and the biggest male seem to be REALLY territorial - chasing every other GBA. I've noticed HUGE chunks of tails being biten out - is there too many GBAs in my tank? Cheers
  12. Amazon swords would be great backdrop - great for fish to hide in too
  13. Hey, wanting to know how many Discus can I have in a 6 foot tank without overcrowding? Currently have 5 at the 6cm length, 2 at 8/9cm. Am also getting two more around the 6cm mark next week - I'm thinking 6 ADULTS, is that too many? ALSO - how often should I feed the Discus now that they're older (once or twice a day?) they're all used to being fed 3 times a day because I had small (3/4cm) Discus growing in there before. They're currently sharing their tank with 10 chain loaches, 5 GBAs, 10 cardinal tetras and 6 glowlights as well as 7 boarding siamese fighters. Any advice would be awesome. Cheers.
  14. haha if it all goes well I'll be swinging past your house again to buy a few off you lol - I have NO patience for breeding, I lack the patience gene lol
  15. ..could be cheaper ONLY when you buy in bulk from there lol got about $20 off when I bought 10 chain loaches, I'm sure if you buy straight from the breeder you knock out the middle man = saving more! PLUS I do think individual breeders keep their tanks cleaner
  16. what does adding salt do for the inhabitants? do you only used when the fish are sick?

    WOW!

I heard because there's still some volcanic activity underground in NZ a pond situation would be teh best for breeding goldfish because it would never get too cold - PLUS goldfish are meant to tolerate sub-zero temps when the surface freezes over. My dad used to be really into his goldfish raising when he was a child and he used to go on about how BACK in his days he used to catch live food only for his goldfish  hahahaha
  18. where did you get your dwarf flags from Cam? the LPS?
  19. Hey Sean, one of the staff at the local petshop told me that there's a lady in the Hutt that actually breeds 'Nemos' (cannot remember it's latin name) - I'd say go for the marine if you want something different, challenge is the fun part - given that you don't kill too many fish that is.
  20. does this apply for all loaches?? will my chain loaches dull out too?
  21. you can also get white riversand, I heard that riversand is neutral and would not alter your water's pH. I'm trying to get my hands on some white riversand at the moment - pretty dam hard things to track down!
  22. what kind of community would these suit? are these south american fish? I'd be keen to add a few to my tank if they were..hope all goes well!
  23. I lost a tank of Orandas and they had this, it looks like it hasn't taken hold yet - when it does take hold your fish will have HUGE spots that are red and covered further by a white fluffy layer. It's good that you've caught it now - DEFINATELY treat the whole tank (trust me you won't regret it). Hope this helps
