  1. Hmm in hindsight I probably shouldn't have opened that can of worms. Lets just keep this thread on the topic of snakes before it gets messy...
  2. Discharged because it has destroyed his relationship and damaged his career and was an accident. I know who it is as well. Who doesn't know who it was? Perhaps if he was so concerned about his career and marriage he shouldn't have gotten so blind rotten drunk that he couldn't tell the difference between a 4 year old and his wife? Calling that an "accident" is the biggest crock ever... Sent to jail because if the snake had eggs that hatched it would wipe out birds which are a fundamental part on the ecosystem. Eggs that wouldn't survive in our cool climate, or wouldn't even happen because there is only one snake?
  3. But it'll be a great advertisment for the country, the flow on effects will be huge!!!! People will realise what a rip off we are with the price gouging going on with accommodation, food and drink, I think its actually going to have negative effects for the country. Still, the overtime I get at work will be nice....
  4. The other potential problem is when the aro notices the fry and starts chasing them. Or were you planning on removing them at wriggler size?
  5. Cichlid gold is still my favourite for the CA cichlids too. Mix it up with a bit of chopped shrimp and Hikari cichlid excel from time to time. I'm going to experiment with NLS large fish formula when they get a bit bigger, it comes in a large bucket so is more cost effective [i think] and contains more vege matter which is good for a balanced diet.
  6. In the same week as a celebrity is discharged without conviction for sexually assaulting his four year old daughter another man is sent to jail for having a pet snake. This country is messed up....
  7. The pointers and weis are a bit bigger than collies, but the vizslas seem to vary a bit, ours is quite small, certainly no bigger than a collie, but I've seen them quite a bit bigger too. On the subject of size, I met a woman with a MASSIVE great dane at the part a couple of months ago, it was enormous, and she said they're actually popular dogs for apartment dwellers as despite their size they're really lazy! I think the collie would be a great dog for your situation, good luck trying to keep it as an outside only dog...

    wee2's my tank

Mine still looks similar in shape to yours, no hump yet and quite elongated. Wish I'd bought more of them now
  9. ^ you'd be one of the very few people in the country who could actually house them... I'd give it a go with a more mild mannered species like you suggested, nic, uaru, chocolate, jd, severum etc. Not sure if I'd want to try with something larger and aggressive like jag, texas or festae, there's a good chance of it ending badly...

    wee2's my tank

Looks to me like one of the Amphilophus Sp. HFF Albany ended up with when they ordered flowerhorns. I've got one, its developed a nice pinkish throat and is showing no signs of fading despite being about 16cm. Someone on MFK said they may be Amphilophus amarillo, which would suit me just fine as I've always liked the barred midas complex!

Use photobucket, I think you need to have an account to view pics on snapfish (which I don't).
  12. Exactly, its not so much exercise as stimulation and "work". As you said, they've been bred to heard things and love doing it, so you need to keep their minds occupied so they don't get bored which usually leads to the destruction of something. A friend had two when we were in school and never had any problems with nipping. I admire people who take on SPCA dogs, but it is a big gamble. You're never 100% sure what the parents are, which means it could have inherited any number of behavioural traits or genetic problems. That said I've seen many lovely pound dogs, they can be great dogs.
  13. A short haired collie could be a great addition to the family if you and your kids are prepared to spend the time with it. They are incredibly smart dogs and need plenty of exercise and stimulation (not just a big open space to run around in on their own). Don't underestimate the amount of time you'll end up spending with it, and as keen as your kids may be now once the novelty wears off it may fall back on you (as seems to happen a lot with kids and pets!). If your son is into hunting then why not consider a gun dog like a pointer, weimaraner or vizsla (like ours)? Probably similar in energy, size and neediness to a collie, but in a few years time when your boy is a little older and may want to start trading the pocket knife for something a bit gruntier you could start training the dog for hunting ducks, phesants or deer. Even without the training vizsla and weis make great family pets as they are really nice natured and intelligent. What ever you go for, research the breed as much as possible and visit several breeders before making a decision.
  14. Who quoted you that price? Mulford Plastics often have offcuts that could work, I'll try go in tomorrow and have a look for you.
  15. Shame you didn't post it before the weekend, I could have got Dad to go check it out as he was down from Whangarei. You could try getting in touch with the Auckland VVCC? http://www.avvcc.org.nz/
  16. Its not "better" but smaller holes will catch smaller particles of crap.

    UV filter

Its certainly a good thing to have if you're keeping fish that are prone to things like whitespot. But on the other hand with such fish if you follow a proper quarantine regime and keep the tank clean you shouldn't encounter it without some sort of freak occurrence anyway.
  18. Probably the nicest looking EBJD I've seen!

    UV filter

What do you want it for, reducing green water or killing parasites like whitespot? Flow rate and exposure time is just as important as the size of the UV. I'd suggest doing some googling and reading before parting with any cash, its not just an "XX watts per litre" thing...
  20. I thought there was some confusion about their status last time that topic was discussed?
  21. Para sell something similar to that, not too expensive, about about 100mm thick IIRC. I've used it as the top layer of mechanical filtration in my sump and its good for catching the big chunky stuff (like uneaten pellets) but not much else. Main reason I use it is to break up the water flow before it hits the filter wool. If you're feeling rich you could order some from these guys; http://www.swisstropicals.com/Poret%20Filter%20Foam.html The foam is cheap enough, but I think because of the volumetric weight the shipping would be pricey. Easy enough to put some in a suitcase if you know someone coming over from the states though...
  22. Maybe see if one of the locals would be willing to take you on a tour of a few of the shops? I'm sure there's people out there just looking for an excuse to spend an hour or two at the LFS. I would offer but I have family staying and I'm working sunday too.
  23. I think Mcculloch was asking for something more official and not just off the top of your head. I too would love to see a list of all reptiles known to be in NZ (in containment and general release) and their status, but IMO its in the too-hard-basket for the authorities. And as for the people injured/bitten by their pets, there will always be foolish people and unfortunate accidents. It certainly doesn't stop people keeping cats or dogs...
  24. Have a look on the MAXX website, probably not that hard to get a bus along dominion or mt eden rd to get to HFF mt roskill...
