  1. Mine didn't get that big before I moved it on, wish I had some better pics!
  2. Neat fish alright, they should be pretty big by now if there's any still around.
  3. Hmm I thought I was supposed to get email notifications for new replies to this topic, I keep forgetting to check in!! That's awesome news FishyNZ, when ever you're ready I'll take ten of the juvis, name your price! I'm so glad to see these being bred, not just because I want some but because it's so easy for new/uncommonly imported species to disappear because nobody invested the time and money to grow out a group. Keep up the good work!
  4. Free sump, 620L 400W 350H + tower. Comes with base board and poly. Pick up only in Whangarei, someone grab it before it goes to the dump! Hasn't been used for a couple of years so no guarantees, might pay to test it first but no reason it shouldn't hold water.
  5. Wow, bit late to the party but awesome to see these being bred here!!! I'm incredibly disappointed I didn't grab some from Redwoods when I had the chance, but it looks like the species in safe hands with at least two good sized groups being kept by people willing and capable of breeding them. @Fruju you must have missed that great article in the last edition of Aquarium World magazine if you didn't know they were in the country! https://aquariumworld.nz/magazine/8-September2016

Get used to it, it's only going to get worse as they grow!
  7. They're nestled right down into the sand, but it will be interesting to see how much they dig around them. The return fromt he sump pushes a fair current through the wood pile and tends to move the substrate out of that corner anyway.
  8. Yeah seems to be, no change in the lumps yet though. Tank is still a little cloudy but I'm happy with how it's looking. Good chance check up on how the nuggets are doing, I wish I saw them more often as the bigger ones (~6" now) are very cool!
  9. All done, no dramas, looks good but needs a heap of smaller rocks to finish the look.
  10. Well I've spent the afternoon collecting, scrubbing and soaking rocks and I'm going to do a bit of a stocktake and rescape tonight, so I may as well fish him out and dab some tonic on it. Nothing ventured nothing gained! I could nick a tiny piece off with a new razor blade and freeze it to examine, but I don't know of anyone with a microscope unfortunately.
  11. Thomas that is exactly what Shane on Planet Catfish suggested, although he said methylene blue. I'm guessing the additional ingredients in the Wunder Tonic won't do any harm. Does that stuff go off? I've got some but it's a good 6-7 years old! Caryl it's not like any fungal infection I've seen before, certainly not fluffy, looks more like some sort of hard gristle sort of stuff coming out from under the skin. I guess I'll have to set aside an afternoon and dismantle the tank to catch it. I've been thinking about doing that anyway to check on the progress of the L85's and to have a bit of a rearrange/rescape and add in some more rocks, so it's probably a good opportunity to do both!
  12. I'm certain the tail seems to work normally still, but I'll spend some time in front of the tank after feeding tonight to make sure. The big Panaques do have the occasional tussle but the pecking order is pretty well sorted so it's never too serious, it's shape and distribution looks unusual for scar tissue.
  13. I noticed this on my second largest L190's tail a few months ago, it hasn't seemed to have gotten any worse (or better) and the fish otherwise seems healthy and normal. Cancer? Warts? Any other suggestions? The fish is about 12", it's in my 2000L tank with three other large L190 and a bunch of other fish, water is 26-7C, pH ~6.8-7, <10ppm Nitrate, <70ppm TDS. Sorry the cellphone pics aren't the best, I can get out the DSLR if better pics would help...
  14. I'm not sure if Mayaheros urophthalmus (ex Cichlasoma) has ever been here, I've certainly never encountered it in my 20-odd years [unfortunately]. As for the "red devil", cam hit the nail on the head; the chances are pretty high that the fish we have here are a mixture of both A. labiatium and A. citrinellum, and the only way to be sure you have one of the true species is to buy wild caught or F1 fish from a reputable collector/dealer, which isn't an option here. 15. Nope, but in a tank that size I think three different species will look a bit chaotic. The fish couldn't care less though.
  16. Pick one species of tetra, two at the most, and add larger groups of each. I'd say forget the glowlights as the rainbows already have some orange on them and shoot for 20-25 each of the black neons and lemons.
  17. Did you add any green stuff? Some crushed up nori or spirulina powder probably would have been worth including too, and a bit of garlic.
  18. Oh man! I would have taken these in a heartbeat! I've been thinking about some clowns for my tank and this would have helped me make up my mind...
  19. 300W is 300W, regardless of brand. What is the ambient temperature of the room? You should be able to work out the power consumption based on the wattage of the heaters, filter and lights, and the hours they are running.
  20. I wouldn't shift them, just get rid of them completely. I looks like a "bubble trap" that you'd see in a salt water sump, albeit widely spaced, unless you have a specific reason for them just get rid of them. What are you using for mechanical filtration?

Yeah I'd think six would be a good number, you could always start with more and thin them out if/when needed. Less than that and there might not be enough fish to spread the aggression between. I think the biggest one I've had was about 28cm TL when it died, so you can probably budget on them getting more like 22-25cm on average.

Nice, what are the dimensions? Wide tanks are cool!!
