Just while we are on this topic, when did normal JD's start being called green?? I had never heard them called green until people started breeding EBJD's, could it be that someone simply mis-heard someone saying "blue gene JDs" and came up with the name blue-green (and there for green)? Because they don't look very green to me... :-?

At the very least you should have a pH test kit, its good to know what your tank is at when introducing new fish. I lost a lot of fish when I started out because we were on tank water and the water in my tank was about pH 5.0, my neon tetras were thriving but everything I added to the tank died from the shock. Once its cycled and running fine you probably don't need ammonia, nitrate or nitrite, I kept all sorts of fish for about 8 years before I started worrying about them.

You'll be waiting a while before any of the festae that came in are sexable, I'm only starting to guess with mine, won't be obvious for some time yet. They also grow slower than a jag or texas.

What about the pump in the barrell, would it run for long enough with no water to cause damage if the timer broke? Or the pump in the big tank, say if the timer broke then you had a power cut and the auto water changer didn't top the big tanks back up for a day or two until you got back. I know its a long shot, perfect storm sorta scenario, but it could happen...

But what price do you pay for reliability? Would suck if it malfunctioned while you were away for a few days....

Try a horticultural supply place like Pacific Growers in Mt Wellington, they might be able to recommend a proper commercial irrigation timer.

Asians are more likely to get drop eye than blacks. A black would be more suited to a tank with other fish, jardinis have a nasty (and deserved) reputation. I'm not sure about keeping a black with aggressive central american cichlids, but with more peaceful south americans it should be fine.

I think that a subject like "WHAT DO YOU THINK" written all in capitals is likely to put people off reading your posts. Seriously though, I'd reduce the number of silver dollars, and add a few more cichlids, nothing too aggressive, maybe severums, or heckelii if you can find some.

Canister easier to clean than a sump???? All I do to clean my sump is pull the old wool out and replace it with new wool, far easier than any canister. You could set up a drip system or auto water changer with a canister filter by drilling the tank and having an overflow (as you would with a sump) that drains to waste, no need to have a sump.

Don't you have chinese people in Palmy North????? Try an asian supermarket, I never pay more than about $14/kg for shrimp/prawn. My hypans and whiptails love it too.

I'm of the belief that there is more to nutrition than the select vitamins/goodstuff the fish food packet tells you about. Feeding meaty foods as well as quality pellet/granular/flake is the best option IMO.

Is that T1KARMANNs one? Now in his 1000g tank? Thats a beautiful set up, and an enormous dat, although the size of the tank and the size of the other fish make it look small...
