  1. Kookaburras have been in NZ for a long time. My uncle lives in Coatesville (just out of Auckland) in a native bushy area and I remember when I was younger I would hear kookaburras in his bush. Havn't heard them lately though.. This is from the TEARA website on kookaburras in NZ..
  2. The snail bowls up and running! No filter or nothing, just an airpump running on it. Picked up a couple of ramshorns from HFF today. When I asked if they could fish out a few snails they looked like this --> ... But when I told them what they were for, they looked like this -->
  3. yay! Got the powerhead replaced and I also got the juwel heater replaced as it was playing up and would not get the water temp higher than 22*C. Although, they had to order it into the shop so I had to make two trips :-? Overall good job HFF!!
  4. Done all of that.. still no luck. I'll just have to make a trip up to HFF 2morow.
  5. Yeah I did that. There was little to no gunk inside it. I think it's more of a equipment failure than from poor maintenance. e.g. there's no humming or buzzing or anything.. just silence I'm going to leave it be for tonight and take it into HFF to get a new one because it's still under warranty.
  6. My powerhead for my juwel lido has stopped working! I did a water change today and after I turned the power back on it worked normally. But 10 minutes ago when I went to feed the fish it wasnt working I've never had a problem with it before.. What can I do?? TIA P.S. It's the Juwel Bioflow Pump 600
  7. Ok so I'm going to go with Ramshorns and Pond snails. I'm sure I could get my hands on some ramshorns quite easily but I've never (that I can remember) seen pond snails at any shop (as a pest snail in a tank). Maybe I should post a Wtd ad in the PT&E section..
  8. But Gary's a SEA snail. He won't breed very well in my goldfish bowl.
  9. Just from a quick google, mystery snails look too pet-like (e.g. apple snails) to have as puffer food . Although if everyone recommends them I'll give them a try. Are the pond snails we get here the same as the ones that i find if I google "pond snails"? If they are the ones we have here, can anyone point me to someone or to somewhere where I could get some.
  10. Well I'm going to be getting a couple of figure 8 puffers soon so I'm going to be proactive and set up a small snail breeding tank now. I've got an unused goldfish bowl that I'd like to use. It's going to have no heater or filter (i'll do frequent water changes). Will the water be warm enough for breeding red ramshorns, or should I try breeding pond snails?

    uv filters

I used my UV filter while I had an outbreak of whitespot AND while my tank was green. I think it may have helped reduce the spread of whitespot and hence help me deal with it quickly. Like you and Ira said, it's nice to have while you are dealing with the green water just to make the tank look better quicker. But no, it does not solve the problem of why you are getting green water in the first place.

    uv filters

I bought a Uview one from HFF awhile back and it was very useful to get rid of green water in my tank. I would leave it in there for about a week along side my normal canister filter and all the (water-borne) algae would be gone. Some are expensive, but if you want a quick fix this is for you.
  14. Well I went to HFF yesterday and came out with a red parrot fish and a blue dempsey. BOTH quite expensive, but I hope worth it. I'll put up some pic's tonight probably.
  15. LOL! I'm sorry! I can't help it! Nice terrarium btw
  16. Yeah I was looking at the rainbows but they like to be in schools don't they? I'm looking for one that would be alright on their own.. They're sooo colourful tho!
  17. lol I forgot to write my tank specs in  It's 370 litres, it has 4x 10cm silver dollars, 1x 20cm albino senegal, 1x 10cm siamese algae eater, 1x 12cm bristlenose and 1x 10cm leopard ctenopoma. All their colours are fairly dull (except senegal and silver dollars) and they blend into the wood and rock decorations. I guess that's what cammo's for lol. But, they're not in the wild now (if they ever were??) I've heared the blue variety of dempsey are MUCH less aggressive than their normal relatives e.g. they never bother any other fish in the tank.
  18. Anyone got ideas on a colourful fish for my tank?? I've decided my tanks too dull and i want some colourful fish to liven the place up. I'm thinking blue dempsey (pricey but I think worth it).
  19. lolol after reading all the posts I'm lyk compelled to find out it's name.. Are these type of eels sold widely in other countries?
  20. wow that's mean! 8) I can see u put a lot of time into it lol

( anyone other recommendations? ) Can anyone recommend how many of each I can have plz Also any advise on how to properly set up a brackish aquarium, water parameters, substrate and rocks etc.. will be happily taken Cheers
