  1. I'd like to find an inexpensive power meter that plugs straight into an outlet then you plug the tank into it. I usually use 1 watt continuous per 2 liters of water for the heating. So for my 440 I'd call that 220 watts. Probably isn't quite that much and definitely a lot less in the summer, but then I don't have to worry about things like lighting actually using more power than the wattage of the bulbs.
  2. I'll try to get one tomorrow. It's looking like a bit of a mess. I had to dig the rock with my anemone out and I put it on the sandbed. So all the rocks are scattered around and the new corals are just sitting on the sand to give them a bit of time to acclimate to the lights. But...yeah, tomorrow.
  3. I think when I replace my bulbs next I'll be going with 10K. Yeah, they're noticably more yellow than my 14Ks, but they are also brighter and the 14Ks seem to be missing a lot of the reds.
  4. Organism had some, I decided not to get it because smothering them in kalk seems to be working...Though they're reproducing as fast as I can' kalk them. Annoying little bastards. I got that one on the zoos just before work and a couple others.
  5. Nope, same camera I've had for a while. Why?
  6. Picked up in Christchurch... A zoanthid cluster... Torch coral... Octopus coral, which I think is AKA frogspawn? And this guy's name is Floyd. A red fairy Basslet Pseudoanthis kashiwae or something. And just because he insisted on getting in the way of the pictures... And, does anyone know where to get plastic hoseclamps for 25+mm hoses? I've looked everywhere...
  7. Or if you're using some a yeast CO2 system which can't be just turned off at night, put an airpump on a timer to come on when the lights go out.

    MH lighting

For that price I SERIOUSLY doubt they were metal halides. Halogens or similar most likely.

    Dwarf puffers

Brazilian puffers aren't supposed to be dwarfs. But, they seem to be pretty slow growing even though they're supposed to get up to around 6". I doubt many survive that long in captivity.

    Cutting Glass

I use a stone I had laying around for sharpening tools on the edges of the glass. Oh, and I absolutely SUCK at cutting glass.

    Chemicals.

Just checked, It's calcium hypochlorite. Same elements anyway.

    Water Polisher/ing

I wonder how well a 1 micron sediment filter would work compared to a diatom filter? Would be easy enough to rig something up to drop that in your tank with a power head sucking water through it occasionally...Not pretty though.

    Baby banggai

Put me down for some too! Wait, depends on how much you wat for them, the *cough*local*cough* fish store with marines here tends to sell them for $150 each.

    Chemicals.

Calcium chloride is spa pool chlorine, isn't it? You can buy it for $20 for about 3 metric tonnes at pak&sav.

    Dying brain?

I have no time. I'm going to be busy all day friday and I leave for the south island saturday. Maybe I'll see if I can squeeze it in somewhere...

    Dying brain?

About half of the segment that was still healthy looking before is now disintegrated.

    Dying brain?

I don't think a little squirt every month or is going to make a huge difference. I'd say it's mostly due to my topoff water and pathetic output from my skimmer. I'd get an RO and...I dunno, plumb the wastewater back into my tank, but 30 meters of hose wouldn't be cheap and it'd be a pain in the butt. But, I'm saving money for when I go to chch in case I see anything good.

Nope, I don't dose iodine. Pretty much the only thing I dose is kalk and I got a bottle of old trace element mix from Animates for a couple bucks that I dose occasionally don't do it regularly.

    They're 14K.
  20. I think it's time to just turn the whole wall into a tank. None of this stuffing around, just pull out the nuclear weapons of the mine is bigger than yours war...
  21. double ended 250 watt MHs second hand I've seen them for the $150 range with bulbs. So they're not too bad. Not the prettiest but they work. You could get a 400 watt single ended setup from a hydroponics weed grower supply shop for $300ish. Check out www.sog.co.nz

    Fish Food

And some medications become toxic if you go too far past their use by date. But with the food it's just losing vitamins. Vitamin C for example degrades on contact with oxygen.

I noticed my xenia is looking a bit shriveled too. The only thing I've done out of the usual recently is feed them bbs, that wouldn't do anything. And I dosed the tank with some magnesium chloride. About 8 teaspoons. Brought the magnesium up from if I remember right 1260-1280(holy crap, do I need 50 teaspoons to get it up to 1350?) I wouldn't think that slight of an increase in magnesium would upset the brain or the xenia? And the chloride from what I'm reading would have gone up about 40ppm, but the normal amount in seawater is about 19,000 ppm so that's practically no increase too. It's probably just a coincidence that the xenia is grumpy now.

Yeah, it's still in a low current spot, just a bit more of barely a breeze than only a breath of current...Nice specific terms.
