  1. with your spawn pick the best female closest to orange in colour, a red maybe and breed it back to the father, your female will carry the gene for orange and breeding back to her orange father will give you a better chance at getting orange, then you can set up a breeding pair from two siblings of that spawn or work on an outcross with another orange if your starting to get any deformates etc.. a little article on orange spotted fighters http://www.bettysplendens.com/articles/page.imp?articleid=1757
  2. catch some of the eggs and put them into a container with shallow water, floating in your tank http://www.bettysplendens.com/articles/page.imp?articleid=3990 might be of some help
  3. if we are attempting to improve the siamese fighter lines in NZ, i dont see how breeding two DTs together will help knowing that the cross will result in even more deformities. then no doubt these fish wil be sold and someone will breed from one, which then gets sold and bred from and so on, then we are ruining the genes that people have worked so hard on in nz sorry i hope that makes sense to others
  4. josh- hopefully not a DT aswell
  5. we are just out of chch and we got water everywhere from the tanks. more than 30 after shocks. chch has flooding and buildings collasped
  6. i had a few plakat males living in a tank together, i didnt realise they were males and i dont think they did either, they were together a good 6 months. but when they realised they were males they had to be seperated instantly!
  7. i picked them up from the pet shop the day they were released ( it was at the pet shop that they were in with vt male) they dont have a lot of tail left, first suspected male has now blown a bubble nest and is doing somr nice flaring, 1 is definately female and the other im still not sure
  8. yes i have seperated them in a divider so they can see each other and i can watch them flair
  9. i know! i hope they are, i havent had one for ages. i will get some photos when they have some fin growth
  10. went to local pet shop, picked up 3 females, was really excited because they were nice different colours compared to the blue/red females. i was worried that they are vt females because i liked their colours to brighten up my tank. get them home and realease them. then realise 2 are agrressive and have huge flares so now im thinking i might have 2 pk males and hopefully a spawn female! they have bad fin damage as they were in a tank with a vt male. so i will see how they look in a couple of days, i hope they are males as i love pk males
  11. the giant males have to be spawned young before they get to big and aggressive. it could be possible we are getting them when they are older and more aggressive. i read somewhere they have to be spawned under 4 months old???
  12. i went spotlighting tonight in our creeks. found a few bullies, they look to be common ones. one was real small and fast! we caught 2 but they were too big to keep, plus my tank isnt up yet. we also found a trout, and 3 of what we assume to be inanga. It was very exciting to see the inanga. so i will set up a tank and go spotlighting again to get something. the room we want to put the tank in is the washhouse. when we go in and turn the bright light on, will it stress them or will they be alright? also wondering how to sex the bullies? of the two we caught one had a little yellow stripe on its fins, was this a male?
  13. does the type of lid matter? is a plain glass one alright? does the sex ratio matter? more females the males best? and what about lighting? im guessing just a dull light?
  14. hey everyone, i am wanting to set up a native tank. but in dont know much about them. im wanting to try bullies and maybe some shrimp. maybe a fresh water cray aswel? plan is a 60x30x30 tank in our washhouse. its a cold room that the heat doesnt fluctuate(spelling?) in. other that that im not sure what else? please help me what sort of lid do they need? filtration? can i get shrimp in christchurch? oh and what can i feed them? thanks in advance ashley

  17. all long fin halfmoon as long fin is dominant, the only way to get pk back is to use a female that carries pk

  19. just dont breed two double tails together, will result in very deformed fry
