  1. I haven't seen them poo this week- not cause they haven't Im sure but just cos I haven't been looking. The last time I saw it it was red (tetra bits food).
  2. Two weeks ago by blue diamond discus seemed to go off his food and started to stay behind the driftwood. One night I saw him rub against a plant twice - thinking flukes I dosed prazi three times over nine days. Treatment finished on Tuesday. Tonight across thirty mins saw three of them all "wipe their faces" across a leaf of a plant - all the same plant - actually all the same leaf. . Now is this flashing or something else and should I treat again or do something different. I haven't seen them do it during the day, just at night. All still beautiful in colour, fins are all up, nothing clamped, eyes bright red, all eating bar the diamond - who started eating during treatment but has gone off food again, and all fairly active. Diamond comes over for food but will often spit it out and then go back to the driftwood. Any ideas?
  3. What are the green clumpy plants in the middle? I like
  4. Please don't. Was your tank seeded from someone's else tank for the filter? If not can you just confirm that you have done tests which have detected both ammonia and nitrite because if not then the tank hasn't cycled. It can take a week or more to start, and I'm just worried that this ain't done yet. If it was seeded or you have gone through all of the above then please ignore me and good luck with the next fish
  5. Ok. Could be nuts. One of my discus started hiding and last night saw him flashing on a plant. Put the prazi in this afternoon. Already he has started to come out...... But. Suddenly after cories looking listless for three weeks and the fits etc I now have two, including the second one to have the 'fits' doing the breeding dance, do you think it was possible that it was flukes causing the problem? I will treat another two times to be sure, or is it just coincidence?
  6. Nope no additives in the tank at all. It's crazy eh.
  7. No algae at all in tank bar a very small Amy of black hair on my crypt. Never have. They have Ben getting more of the tetra bits for the last two months while the discus have been in thre but they also gt their wafers and sticks as usual. No fly spray near the tank. No slick on top - there are two oxygen walls and the filter outflow so a lot of movement on the top. Sorry
  8. No there are three quite big ones. And 5 smaller ones. The first one to do t was a big one, and the second one was smaller. Tonight the smaller one was lying on his side, breathing heavily, didn't go up to the top at all. Next minute he's up and eating and looks perfectly fine. I swear five mins before ge was completely out to it.
  9. They did go thru a nitrate spike when I was away, which I have read can also contribute to their barbel issue. I've been working for two weeks to ensure they stay under 10 and preferably 5 so will keep that up and see what happens. Cory number 1 has now not done it for a week and a half and number 2 did it again yesterday. Triply the weirdest thing. Peas for tea today though
  10. Thanks for the info. :gpo2:
  11. The temp is that high for the discus. So my only alternative us to take them out and put in my 60l which has 19 neons and one bristle and I don't want to overstock it. It is set at 25.5 though temp wise
  12. I did wonder that. Up until about three weeks ago they were doing the mating dance every water change so I thought they were quite happy. It's only one cory that heads to the top, and now the second one. The first one has since stopped doing it, and none of the others do.
  13. Well kind of. Something strange is happening with my cories. First one, one if the larger ones started three weeks ago. It suddenly darts to the top, and then floats down completely 'dead'. When it gets to the bottom it rights itself, but then continues to fall over and the come right again.. It seriously looks like it goes unconscious then wakes up. Comes right within about an hour and then just goes around normally. Until the next time. Twice I have caught it thinking it was dead and the it comes right. When I got back from holiday the nitrates were high and I noticed that 5 of my 8 had lost their barbels. After two weeks of water changes and keeping things clean only two aren't showing signs of growing back.. Tonight one of my other cories started it. Seriously it looked dead half an hour ago. Normal now. Params are Ph 7, amm 0, nitrate under 10, nitrite 0, temp 29, all stable (slight ammonia at one end of tank last week due to dead spot all fixed). Water changes 20% every two days. 300l. Any ideas?
  14. Crickey do the fish have surf boards? Will leave it for a week or so with the bubbles and see if its enough and if not I'm off too see my friend again. See ya soon Ron
  15. Hi. I seem to have dead spot in my tank. It is 1.4metres long with a canister filter so the water all along the back and the opposite end moves well. But at the end where the output is, in the opposite corner I did a water test deep today and it was 0.25 for ammonia. Water at top and the other end is 0 and has been for four months So I'm wondering if the water in that corner just isn't moving. Have just done a 50% change , moved all my driftwood and cleaned it like no ones business then put another oxygen wall right along that end of the tank. Will that be enough or would I be better to get a small internal filter and aim it right across the tank into that corner and would that create too much current for the discus?
  16. Thanks all. Glad to know the tank will be fine in my absence. We all make our own decisions about what we like with our tanks, and I make mine too.my discus aren't adults, but I feel good Bout my water changes, why I do them and the pleasure I get out of interacting with my tank. I'm also lucky in that my beautiful garden benefits from the water changes rather than using the sprinkler in summer which I don't consider a waste. So. Good to know five days isn't an issue, for the rest nice to know what works for you.
  17. I have discus so like to change my water twice a week. There's nothing wrong with it, just like it to be clean. Thanks Ron, appreciate it
  18. Ok thanks..... Will do one tomorrow and then Tue when I'm back
  19. So am going away Friday morning and back Tuesday arvo, and the person house sitting is not going to be trusted to change the water. I'm worried about not doing a water change for that length of time, especially with discus in the tank. Is there a company that offers a water change service in auckland that anyone knows?
  20. Beautiful. That is some serious machinery under the hood!

    DIY pleco food

Yeah, when using small ones I usually cut about half into quarters or slices and boil it. Lasts a few hours along with a handful of plecochips. More pieces means noone hogs the entire thing. I figure one or two slices of this big one is probably about the same amount as a half of a normal sized courgette. And I have a 12"ish redspot, an 8-9" inch goldspot and about 10-20 bristlenoses. Good point Just looked up the screwcumber. Looks like it would make it a bit tough for anything but small fish to eat between the coil, and I'd have to dig it out of the tank all the time. Maybe if there was a string on it dangling out of the tank.

Ok I have to ask - you just feed slices? A whole courgette, parboiled and sliced in half lasts one day in my tank. What are you feeding that you get away with slices? Also I got two screwcumbers from the UK, sinking is now no longer an issue and they were only $30 for two delivered to the door.
  23. Looking nice. The fish are pretty. What else were you going to add?
  24. As soon as I can catch one from the big tank I plan too. I want to take my one male out so no babies . Although it looks gross to eat ...........
