  1. Of my six discus, two are by far the bigger. Today I have noticed that those two are shimmying at each other almost like a Shiver. And one if them is spending quite a bit of time pecking at the piece of driftwood that sticks up vertically in the tank. Its not flashing, something very different. They have kind of taken ownership of the left hand side of the tank, any discus that goes over there is told to bugger off pretty quick. Is it aggression or something else?
  2. Hmmm it's thin and flows and bright green, but is all attached to my plants. When you take it out and sort of rub it between your fingers it disintegrates but it takes a bit to destroy it. I'm wondering re the SAE's then. Tank is 300l and got cories, 4 bristles, harlequins, rummies and 6 discus (hence the quarantine) but I would get my fish from Ron and he always has the best quality. I really like what the ferts are doing to the plants, so would be keen to let them continue for a while if poss without upsetting everything again........ So if I have a non-play with everything again solution and the fish are cool then might be good. Got 8 cories, 4 bristles, 9harlequins and 9 rummies with the discus, so it shouldn't be overstocked. Although looking online, my tank is 29 degrees so not sure they would like that much?
  3. Thank you kinnadian. It's the long green thread algae, and over the last day I think I have seen a decrease in it - the forest has really taken off ver the last day alone. I had though of a Siamese algae eater but don't know a lot about them and I was trying not to add any more fish to the tank - more cos I can't be bothered with the quarantine than anything . Having said that I do have one or two of my dwarf sag with some old black beard on it, which isn't getting worse but if you have time still keen to know your thoughts? The ferts are root tabs as all my plants are stem plants, and I think, touch wood they are winning the war. They have only been in for a week so it's really only just starting to take off
  4. Ok, so I have my planted tank that wasn't doing well in the plant stakes. Earlier posting, good advice, much fertiliser and now some wonderful green growth starting. However I noticed I have hair algae - not a huge amount and only on the ambulia at present, but its growing well. I twirl it round my tweezers every couple of days to take what I can out but it grows back. I believe it kicked off due to the change in seasons meaning there was a small shaft of direct sunlight for about half an hour every morning - that has been eliminated. Question is will the hair algae die off now that the plants are taking off and will choke it out, or am I in for a long fight, in which case any ideas. I know about squirting excel on direct but am not keen on anything that will potentially impact the fish. Have reduced lights to 7 hours full with half an hour each end with only one light on so total period 8 hours. Can reduce more if needed but its that interesting trade between growing the plants and growing the algae. Anyway suggestions welcome.
  5. I have the Grow one and it has whole on the label for that as well.
  6. So where can you get NLS in NZ. I'd be keen for my discus to interchange with tetra it's, but flake doesn't work cos they just don't get it that its food I don't think
  7. Hi alexyay. I would move the wood to the middle and maybe lie it down so there is a hole underneath and then may be get another piece to lean against it to stand up ( a slightly more skinny piece). Plant wise I think it need some oter focal points, maybe a beautiful red plant (depending on light) or a forest of something. Something to help cover the back and to take focus away from the glass. Maybe some Anubias as well to cover bits of the wood, I like them more than the grasses for foreground. Just some thoughts, but everyone different . Sorry to hear about your Betta. Don't know anything about columnar is but I thought tat involved white fluffy stuff to the face. I would def think bacteria though to be multiplying that fast and eating the flesh. Re the calicoes - I saw those advertised, are they actually a breed of bristlenose or a hybrid? If a hybrid they may not be that hardy?
  8. Ok so based on that fabulous diagram it looks like the iron one. Te whole plant goes yellow (well that is what happened to my crypts and ambulia). So I got some fertiliser tabs to get me thru til I figure this whole fert dosing out - a science on its own! Which has caused a nice green tinge, although that has gotten under control within a couple of days. Will be very interested to see what happens. For those if us, or me, who aren't confident with calculating and buying and drop checkers and who were never good at science, is there a good all round fert tab for the substrate or is it a case of sucking it up and figuring the whole thing out?
  9. Just beware with the AquaOne heaters, they do tend to get a white mouldy looking covering on the black parts for a while when you first use them. I posted on here about it and it seems common, but haven't had it in my fluval heaters. It didn't seem to harm anything but I didnt like it so tend to stay away from AquaOne heaters now - although they are generally cheapest.
  10. I would buy two x 300 watt. I think it's always better to have more wattage but others may disagree
  11. Nope, treated successfully with prazi in my tank with scaleless fish and it worked well. Wondering why using droncit though and not just the liquid prazi you can buy? Is it a cost thing - I know the liquid stuff is more expensive, but very easy to use. If you do go liquid, put it in the tank in front of your filter outlet as otherwise it ends up in white clumps. And don't be concerned that it looks cloudy and creates bubbles - it's normal!
  12. New growth goes yellow. Old growth tends to just look sad.
  13. Do I just chuck a worm in the tank or would I need to cut it up?
  14. Hiya, I have a planted discus tank, with no Co2 or frets in it. Thing grow well, however after a certain height they go yellow and stop growing. There is 4 x t5 lighting on it, 300l. What frets could I use that won't upset my discus or other fish? I had heard that either excel or flourish don't go we'll with discus. I have ambulia, Anubias, hair grass and dwarf sag in the tank. And some thing else I don't know the name of. Any suggestions welcome
  15. What live food can I get/feed my discus. I can't grow mosquito larvae fast enough and they love me so much when they get their live stuff.
  16. So after a five treatment cycle in my hospital tank over the weekend for my three that weren't eating, they have all been back in the big tank since Monday night. M big pigeon ate like a pig last night, and this morning for the first time in three weeks I had six hungry little faces greeting me. BD still isn't eating a lot, but he has one or two bits. His colour is coming back and he ad a tough time in the hospital tank so I figure a week or so is needed to relax him again. So far, finges crossed, things have improved :happy2:
  17. Just been reading online that the bars on discus are stress bars and peppering on my pigeons is also due to stress. So I'm wondering if that is true, I kind of though the roses just got them as they had different moods, and they hardly ever are just the red colour, they usually have some stripes or at least one through their head. The also seem to be fairly happy, so I just can't understand why they would be so stressed all the time, if this were true. Any ideas, I like the bars, but didn't realise they were a bad thing........
  18. Ooh I didn't think of rams and I love the blue ones. Even rainbow fish s something I have never had before........ Didn't even think of a show fish pair for breeding but now that sounds very cool
  19. Will you fit in the tank? :sml1:
  20. I'd love to but have no idea how
  21. An update. After treating with prazi, my big pigeon and the BD continued to not eat and showed signs of getting skinny. They are now in the hospital tank with the little pigeon being metro'ed with a view of after five treatments being back home Monday night. To keep their water stable I am taking the water from the big tank for the hospital water changes so they are in exactly the same water, but needless to say they aren't happy. A nervous weekend ahead.
  22. Ok, it has one orange finned bristlenose male, but other than that nothing. Suggestions? Not bettas, guppies or platys but open to anything else. Like schooling fish. It's planted and got driftwood but otherwise blank canvas
  23. Have managed to get photos of what I mean. One of my other discus also has something similar on it that has turned up today. There is no damage to the fins that I can see
  24. Ok. BD def not eating and now lights are on he seems to have smudge like areas on his fins. They look opaque instead of see thru. And If I treat him with metro should I do all six discus in case - there was only one that didn't flash prior to me treating with prazi so am I better to do all at the same time? And can six discus last I a 60 l hospital tank for two and a half says while I treat? And last question would it be in the tank? Ie do I treat then out them back in and end up in the same place cos I needed to treat the whole tank. And lastly, if so, any vets that I can get 25 metro pills from?
