  1. Hi Sophie, yes brand new, tank was cycled with 20 neons and then two weeks later the harlequins, no ammonia for last five weeks, and I test every day. I do 20% water change every second day and yes brand new filter medium. Tank was stocked slowly after cycling with 5-10 fish per week. The rummies went in three weeks ago, the bristles all went in as small babies about four weeks ago. No ammonia since these guys in, this is my second tank so completely aware of cycling etc.

    RIP Big boy

Sorry Gill, betcha he had a good life.
  3. Hi. 300l tank, 8 weeks old. 3 rummies, 24 neons, 9 sterbai cories, 5 bristles. Last night one cory died, yesterday and th day before one rummy each, and the day before a neon. Prior to that, an issue with angels hunting had led me to lose 4 neons and 1 rummy however no bodies found so assumption of them being dinner was made. Last week 3 rummies. Only one fish has had anything outside, but possible he was bitten by the angels as it was the day after they were removed. The fish look fine, then will pass. Checked the cory that died and seriously there was nothing outside, and did an autopsy but nothing obvious there either (not that I'm an expert). But my brown bristles now seem to have lighter patches on their dark brown. It's not whitespot, it looks almost smudged, I had seen something similar before when they were growing but now I'm not sure. Yes I could be paranoid. I have spent hours staring at them and sometimes they don't look different, other times they do, will try to post pics. There is no fluffiness or anything standing off their skin. Am 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 5. Ph7, kh and gh2. Lost first three rummies when melafix in tank, lost last one day I put flourish in. Cory and neon no idea. Any ideas and am starting together very sad ........
  4. I did wonder, I have two others who are siting next to each other doing high fives with their fins, all very cute, but crazy little critters
  5. So read online absolutely not, as they will suck on the side of the discus. Others say they have never had a problem, so what do you think?
  6. Hi all, I have 10 Sterbai cories, all diff sizes, three of who are quite big. I have noticed today that two of the big ones are very active, and are constantly twirling round and round each other. They have literally stayed together all morning. But one of them has changed colour, it's like it's blushed, it's body is darker looking and it's cheeks and head look blushed. It's beautiful but looks different to the others, any ideas? Did water change yesterday (40%). All 0 bar nitrate about 3, water soft.
  7. Which is a good point, can do all this, turns out that wasn't what it was and the outcome is still the same. Fish keeping can be a tough hobby! Time to sit back and think about what might work - no angels! And in the meantime leave my guys be for a few weeks,
  8. No I didn't know that, wow glad I didn't out it in there. Lost one more yesterday, another rummy. Today tho all good so far, touch wood. I wonder if the melafix just upset the rummies on top of the stress........
  9. Thanks heaps. Yep dosing as per instructions but I agree, I have lost two rummies today and I swear there is nothing external wrong at all. The tetras are the most amazing blue. I think I'm going to Do that, keep it as clean as and wait to see. Formalin could very well kill more. Appreciate your help.
  10. I have no idea, LFS suggested it could be parasite due to the lesion. Have put melafix in tank and just lost another rummy. No lesions, nothing if any note that I could see. neons all look Good, but now two of my brown bristles do have lighter bits across their back, but I have often seen that with their growth spurt and they are both only about three months old. Another rummy is now looking pale - and I am wondering if I should do a water change in case they are actually reacting to the melafix ....... I truly don't want to dose the tank with anything if I don't need too, and I could run the risk of losing just as much with the formalin ..........
  11. Last night one of my neon tetras lost colour and had what looked to be white on his head. This morning he was dead with a brown lesion looking thing in his tummy. My rummies also lost all colour in their heads. I have also lost one other rummy thursday but nothing untoward seen there. I did have two angels who were hunting so they have gone to another more angel friendly place. Current stocking is 25 neons, 7 rummies, 10 harlequins, 10 corys and 5 bristles. Water params are amm 0,nitrite 0, nitrate 5, ph 7.0, kh and gh 2. I have had no ammonia in my tank and do 20% 2x week. LFS gave me formalin for parasites but am scared it will kill my filter. Just turned lights on and everyone looks good, good colour, rummies back to good, corys crazy........ What do I do. Treat or not treat?
  12. Having just done a filter check and a full clean came across two half eaten bodies of the neons. That makes three neons and two rummy completely disappeared and the third rummy has just lost his battle (the one with half a lip gone). Have checked and there are no white growths or anything so doesn't look like disease and funnily enough the fish that are gone are the smaller ones. Just back from local fish shop and he agrees it's the angels, so they have gone back to the shop and I will reassess what next. And yes you were right, it was every night that another one disappeared ...........
  13. Hi. 300litre planted tank. Currently has 30 neons, 10 harlequins, 9 rummys, 5 bristle, 10 Cory's and 2 angels. 20% changed 2x per week. Ammonia 0, nitrite 0 and nitrate 5. Angels are about 7cm body. Something has started going on the prowl, in last week I have lost 5 neons and 1 rummy. Another rummy missing since last night and a further one looks like it has had its top lip bitten. Red of top lip is missing. I want community tank, so is it what I am thinking and the angels are going fishing at night? I have seen them trying to nip at the bristles but not much else. Any ideas gratefully accepted, whoever it is is coming out. I'm all about peace
  14. Hi, my boy blue ram has suddenly become the size of a barrel. Happened over the last two days, isn't from food as they have only been fed once in that time. usually fed every second day, alternating two times feed of flake then one of blood worm with sinking pellets for the bottom feeders. Today though his stomach is very distended and from front on he looks like a barrel. Water params are ammonia 0, nitrite 0 and nitrate 10. Did a 50% water change , 210 litre tank at 27 degrees community tank with 2 angels, lemon tetras, black phantoms, bristles and cory cats. Scales don't seem to be sticking out other than they look very tight due to size. Any suggestions as to what I can do would be very much appreciated, I don't want to lose him. He is approx 12 months old. Looks like he is going for food but didn't eat when I fed tonight. Seems to be out and about, but top fin is down.a little
  15. ahhh I see, you're right nothing like goldfish but alot like a guppy, little buggers
  16. they are beautiful fish - i would love discus, but thought my tank too small at 190 litres, mind you couldn't part with my two beautiful angels so guess will just keep dreaming
  17. have you got them in with anything else?
  18. I don't know anything about gambusia, but wikipedia says that some of the species are rare and others extinct. but I take it they damage native fish species - is that right??
  19. can I ask what size tank you have them?
  20. just waiting for cover of darkness it seems,he's gonna be a daddy and you're right he did go back in there and suck round some more, but if you're gonna have babies with the boy you want him to do his chores!
  21. Hi All, last week I did a big clean up and moved my community tank around, so it was looking pretty cool. Moved my bristles cave as well and then today the boy and girl were both in the cave rolling over each other. She then went down into the bottom of it and sat there, while he covered her from the entrance and fanned her. Now I thought that she might have been laying eggs, but she has just left and there is none in there - any ideas what they might have been doing. It was really exciting to think that we might have been seeing her lay, as she has always done it in the dark before. And I wouldn't have thought he would let her hang out in the tank unless it was for laying???
  22. We've got about that much in a 190 litre tank, and i would say it is right on the limit. I would also consider taking out the female betta or the dwarf gourami (or both) and adding back in the bristlenose, that way the tank is a bit more even and you have the added fun if the bristles breed, assuming you get a boy and a girl of course. It's always fun to watch that happen (of course you might want to get two of the same 'type' if breeding)
  23. the angels will be pleased, I'm assuming I have two males (only have 2) given that they have now staked out half the tank each and when they get grumpy turn on their sides and rush each other. Then they sulk in the corner for a while before having another go.
