  1. Apparently Seachem Matrix is pretty good. Very expensive though. Here's the description on their website - http://www.seachem.com/Products/product ... atrix.html Otherwise, like Jen, I've found Eheim Ehfisubstrat Pro and Eheim EhfiMech to work very well. I only use Eheim filters on my aquariums and most of their filters come with media.
  2. I put my camera right up to the glass which eliminates the problem of reflections
  3. I've found it very easy to use! Great beginner's camera IMO. I have pretty much tried all of the functions on it and I've had it for a few years now and it's been great, but I want to move on to something bigger and fancier
  4. Thanks guys I'm using a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H3  I can't wait until Christmas when all the sales are on so I can get a DSLR :bounce:

    The What's Up? thread.

I'm watching "Missing" right now. It is extremely good! Giesemann's new website sucks :-? They have hardly any information on any of their products any more
  6. Awesome! I used to have tonnes of daphnia the blackworm tank when I had a light over it, because the light created green water. But for some reason the worms didn't do as well so I removed the light and the daphnia population went down. I might have to consider setting up a seperate tank for the daphnia but I'm not sure whether I'll have the room.
  7. I've taken loads of really good photos of my fish without putting them into a smaller tank. I have tried using a smaller tank/container, but if anything, it freaks them out and they go spastic and they're impossible to photograph.
  8. Yep you're exactly like me  In fact I don't even have any proper friends that I can "connect" with if you know what I mean. My friends at school think I'm a bit weird and I never talk about my fish with them because they don't really care much about them. I just stand there at break, eating or thinking about random stuff, while they play games on their iPods or bounce balls to each other. Probably about the only people that I can have a decent conversation with are a couple of people that I've been talking to on Flickr about photography (my other obsession haha).
  9. Thanks everyone! Yeah I'll try and get one or two for you Here's some other bunny photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/joes-in-th ... 736209376/ The photos are all linked from Flickr and for some reason they do load a lot quicker. The annoying thing is that I'm only able to access the direct URLs from my last 18 uploads. Also I have to upload these two because I'm SO HAPPY with them! Hahaha. I took them at the wairau lagoon a couple of weeks ago. And here's a pasta dish that I cooked a couple of weeks ago
  10. I've ordered the tanks from Petworld  2x 50x45x40cm with 6mm glass, beveled and polished edges, and internal bases. And I will get some other stuff when I'm in Christchurch - heaters, test kits, sponge, filters, buckets/filter wool for a peat filter and lots of other stuff
  11. I don't really know what else to do these holidays. I don't share a common interest with any of my friends, so I can't really hang out with them because basically all they do is play violent video games. And apart from eating, sleeping, watching TV and planning my breeding setup, photography is pretty much all I can think of to do in my spare time. I will try and take at least one good photo every day. Here's what I've got so far from Saturday, Sunday and today Sorry to those who have slow internet Check out my Flickr photostream for lots more
  12. Beautiful photos Caryl! Those are awesome
  13. Haha same here Although I think I have even more of a problem  For me it is an obsession, not a hobby - it is almost all that I think about, and the only thing limiting me from getting more tanks and fish is money and room. If something happened to my tanks and fish I would probably commit suicide Not kidding either.
  14. Great work on the spawn! :happy2:
  15. Tannins and soft water are not necessary for trifasciata to breed. Soft water is necessary for fish like A. agassizii and macmasteri. And you don't need tannins to have soft water either. One of my two pairs of trifasciata that I bought last year when they were imported again spawned in water with a pH of around 8 I didn't even realize that this had happened. I saw a cloud of about 30 fry swimming around one day, gaurded by the two parents. And this was in a community tank with other Apistos and fish. There aren't any South American plants that you can use leaves off that are available in NZ to my knowledge. I don't even know the names of the plants that grow in South America, and I highly doubt that any could be grown in NZ because they are rainforest plants. And biosecurity wouldn't even allow them into NZ anyway.
  16. I left them for about a month and then replaced them. I removed the second lot and I haven't put any back in since, because the piece of wood puts tannins in the water.
