  1. Probably from fighting and or crashing nto thinks trying to escape - exactly how many of each fish do you have in there?
  2. If you are serious about keeping your Oscars healthy you'll need a big filter. I keep my breeding pair in a relatively small tank (240Litres), but with an Eheim 2028 pumping 950Litres/hour through it, plus they get an 80% water change one a week without fail.
  3. Can you clean marine algae off it without scratching it?
  4. I'm working on plans for a giant RSM type tank - 9 x 4.5 x 4.5 tank housed in a 9 x 7 x 6 stainless steel cage complete with all filtration equipment, and generator, and lifting eyes so I can move it with a forklift  So far I have discovered that 20mm glass is really expensive - so expensive that it might be better to use 10mm double glazing
  5. Yes - why did America elect Bush?
  6. Make sure you use river sand - sand from the beach is very dirty and often too coarse. As far as driftwood goes I'd be very inclined to buy a piece of bogwood - driftwood from the beach can contain all sorts of nasties and is a real pain to disinfect / nuetralise (you have to soak it in freshwater for months).
  7. Anywhere like Mitre10, Placemakers, etc. You'll also need a long straight edge.
  8. The difference here is that you sound like you are willing to give something back (i.e. money) for the work that goes into producing fry in the first place, unlike some of the previous posters and people who have PM'd me wanting everything for free. I have no problem with selling fry at a price that covers my costs, but I'm not faffing around at my own expense for people I've never met who want to call me names. Selfish? Maybe, but that's my call.
  9. Personally I don't see any difference - growing out fish is growing out fish, regardless of where they came from. If you choose not to pay retail for fish then that is entirely your decision, but don't grizzle because people won't give them to you for free
  10. I get $450 a pair when I sell mine off!
  11. Another thing occured to me over the weekend whilst bucketing water - having your fish spawn is the reward for all the hours spent cleaning, bucketing, watching, and generally working out how to provide the fish with what they need. If you just want to grow someone else's fry out, you may as well just by some from the local fish shop - most of the fish there are babies anyway, and you have a better chance of success because they have already made it to a certain size and are viable.
  12. Guys, I was so concerned about the reading I actually went and bought a second Phosphate test kit and retested at the time with the same result. I don't know where the phosphate came from (maybe there is something growing in my hot water cylinder?) but in any event it is gone now. It may just be coincidental that the mains down the street got replaced - there is no way to tell now. I think all that can be concluded so far is that Christchurch tap water is OK for quite a few corals, but not optimum if you really want stellar results.
  13. Yep, I've got a couple of Eheims - as new (they got used for a week), for sale for a reasonable offer. PM me if you want to make one
  14. Here's how to tell what sort of Algae Eater you have: http://www.thekrib.com/Fish/Algae-Eaters/
  15. Increasing circulation certainly helps. You can just buy a small powerhead to increase circulation - they just sucker on to the glass on the inside and you can direct them wherever you need. Siamese Algae eaters are best kept in pairs or small groups.
  16. Go and have a look in Organism on Ilam Road - John has quite a few interesting larger fish, and you can judge the compatibility by what else he has in the tanks.
  17. Put them in the 60 litre, and get to work on your big tank.
  18. Personally I would have bought them AFTER you have the big tank up and running. 16 Litres isn't very big, 60 isn't a lot better. Maybe you have a friend that can put them in their tank until the big tank is ready?
  19. Put them in with the fighter (and get a bigger tank)
