  1. But it need not be - that is what is good about this forum and being able to ask questions - you can learn from other people's mistakes and avoid the expense and disappointment. Its just my view, but I don't think starting out with a little tank is the best option - it is the most likely setup to fail, the most likely to disappoint, and the most likely to send your money down the drain.
  2. I think you should get rid of the aiptasia before it spreads all though your tank
  3. Those brittle stars are a little different from the last lot - from memory they have no dark markings / banding on the body other than couple of dots above each leg, a bit like lekmalia (sp?) stars. In any case, a full brittle star is a happy brittle star, so chuck it a piece of pink shrimp and it will be fine.
  4. Its an aiptasia - very classy!
  5. Plus I doubt it helps your Ph, has any buffering capacity, or anything else useful. Little marine tanks are hard - if you haven't done marine before, then you should probably stick to the 'normal' methods first until you begin to understand how everything works.
  6. They are eationg algae and detritus out of the substrate - they just 'dig' to get at the good bits that they can smell.
  7. I thought that was 'Women's prerogative?'
  8. Yep, I'm thinking RO might be a good thing - at least you know what is going into your tank. Even if Christchurch tapwater is OK for most things, I suspect RO might be better.
  9. I think he's just going to take a mouthful of water, slosh it around in the back of his mouth, and spit it back in.
  10. THEY EAT PEOPLE! (Well, in the movies, anyway...)
  11. Yea, I'm beginning to work out what I like and what I don't, and what works where. The flows in the tank are very limiting - it could really use a third pump low and right to randomise the currents a bit.
  12. Yea - did any of it pull through?
  13. Oh well, down at the bottom it is
  14. Cheers wilson - you haven't got a little piece of blue/gray Xenia you'd swap for some SpongeBob, have you?
  15. Yea, Wilson, stop diddling around with that glue bottle and show us your real tank.
  16. She found it in your hand?
  17. Yep, you can see from the shadows that it has some sort of spoy in it - still nice looking.
  18. So, any tips on how to remove a clam? I was going to move them higher, but the one at the bottom has a good grip on the rock - or does this mean that it is happy enough?
  19. Any dense foam or polystyrene will do - closed cell EVA is the best, but it is expensive - what it does is allow the glass to expand, contract, and warp (if you only heat one side, like the inside, glass tries to curve) without causing 'stress risers' - points at which the glass gets adhered to the stand causing an internal stress, which can become a crack - its the same principle as mounting glass in rubber, rather than directly into the aluminium frame.
  20. Just don't put Kuli Loaches etc into a tank with Silica sand - it is very sharp and can irritate their gills etc.
