  1. I don't (touch wood) have algae, so must be the food. Was wondering if it could be coming from the Daltons mix i used as a substrate (with gravel over the top)
  2. Well, i must admit i'm relieved its not just in my tank, so nothing to worry about really? Hans, i thought it might be from my skin too, but sounds more likely to be the food, bet its those *** shrimp pellets for the corys that they never eat! Might just feed them to my cat
  3. Ah, from the food you say! Not feeding alot as there is not a lot to feed at the moment, just 20 harlequins, a pair of GBA's and 3 corys. Will adjust the outflow and try the paper towel thing.
  4. Looks to be oil based, is it oil?? Does anyone else have this problem? Where does it come from, is it harmful in any way, and whats the easiest way to get rid of it? Sorry for all the questions, but can anyone enlighten me :-?

There is one of these on TM at the moment, i'm just wondering how much it's worth (they are claiming it's a female, bout 4 years old and 6cm) and if they are particluarly difficult to keep? thanks
  7. Was planning on staying clear of basically any from TM, but especially the small ones after you warned me about him Blue, have sent Ron an email but waiting for reply, Blue did you get my email??
  8. please excuse my ignorance, I realise this may be a really stupid question, as i really dont know that much about killies, but could they go into a 430lt planted discus tank, with Harlequin rasboras, corys, GBA's and glass catfish? If not then its on to tank number 2! (the flatmate already thinks im mad)
  9. Hi everyone, i'm finally going to be able to get some discus in the next couple of weeks, so want to be prepared with food for the new arrivals! they should all be about 5-6cm. Any advice on what to feed, as i understand a varied diet is good, how much to feed and how often would be really appreciated
  10. I will be doing 25% water changes every 2-3 days, unless someone tells me i need to do more! Bought the left piece of wood off TM and the right from HFF - had to chop about 3cm off the tall piece and it still only just fits under the lids! Cant wait to put the discus in! (especially with pupuke having a special on them at the moment!) thanks for the comments guys, good to know im on the right track
  11. Thanks for that Dixon, i'm still new to this, and working on a Mac which makes life a little more difficult! Maybe next time i'll be able to get them to a reasonable size!
  12. Did i do that right? Why don't the pics actually show without having to click on the link?? :-?
  13. Hopefully with pics if i can get this right! Day 0, tank, stand In the beginning.... Day 7, fully planted Left side... and the right hand side... Finally got this together, thanks to a very kind and helpful person (he knows who he is, can say if he wants) who built me a stand after plan A failed me. Some of you will also recognise your plants etc in there too! Tank is 4ft x 2ft x 2ft Filters = 2 x fluval 404 4 x 4ft light daltons mix with fine (ish) brightwater gravel plants include anubias, christmas moss, frilled java fern, java fern, ambulia, tiger lotus plus others Currently stocked with: 8 Harlequin rasboras 3 sterbai corys 1 female GBA (about 5cm) Going to have discus in soon all comments, suggestions etc welcome :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
  14. How do you remove your runners Caryl? If you (and this is only IMHO) break the runner off from the mother plant end, basically you will leave a 'wound' which may or may not encourage it to produce more runners from the same point? Following the same principal, you could try breaking off one or two of the big plants outer leaves, to wound it and perhaps encourage it to send out runners?? This is entirely untested from my end, just using my plant knowledge and experience working with Clivia which will also only propergate from runners. could be worth a go
  15. IMO wouldn't personally, you will destroy the growing point and kill the plant, only propergation is by runners
  16. thanks davidb, they look aweome! Yeah, my wish list of inhabitants might have to change, they wouldn't be going in until the plants are well established....might have to get another tank for them!!
  17. Discus!! plus harlequin rasbora's, GBA pair, maybe some fancy plecs if i can get my hands on some, not sure what else if anything. Have some plants already. Tank is 4ft x 2ft x 2ft
  18. I am finally setting up my 4ft tank this weekend all going to plan...it's going to be a planted tank. Does anyone know of a good site with lots of pics of planted tanks that i can get some ideas and inspiration from please :bounce: :bounce:
  19. Breeding can be a lottery, but if you keep records of what pairings you make, and the results from each pairing you should get an idea of the genetic makeup of each fish. You will quite likely get different results from the same fish, paired with different partners (just like us 8) ). This is just my 2 cents worth (coming from a plant breeder)
  20. be careful how long you leave vege's in for though, i lost a GBA through bacterial infection after leaving courgette in for too long (only overnight)
  21. It's probably a matter of try and see. I dont personally know which colours are dominant, but you may have to simply find an individual carrying the right colours to get more blotched babies. For example lets say black is dominant, white recessive, B x w = Bw (black coloured, but carrying white) now cross this Bw x B and you should get 75% black and 25% white, or if you crossed the Bw x w you should get 50/50 black and white. My point is you dont know what an individual may be carrying cryptically, that you cant see so you will quite likely get varying results from different pairings!
  22. Can anyone help me with this please. I have access to HEAPS of bamboo, just wondering how to go about curing/ageing it, how long it takes. All info appreciated, thanks!
  23. Stupid, senseless, idiotic #*%^#*'s. Sorry to hear that Matt, bet the police are no help either  like loopy said, its one thing to steal etc, but to deliberately kill another (defenceless) living thing is just disgusting
  24. I'm just waiting on a stand for my 4 x 2 x 2 ft tank to be built, then it will be all go! Have spent the last couple or more weekends stripping paint and then sanding rimu weatherboards to be used for the stand.
