  1. Could be a fungal problem? I'm only guessing as well, just going by what i know about plants.
  2. Would one 4ft light be enough (with the appropriate bulbs) for a 4ft x 2ft x 2ft tank? Asking as this tank is deeper and wider than standard 4ft tanks, would the light be reaching down and across far enough for all the plants? 8)
  3. To me it looks like the holes would be caused by small snails and or fish?? Doesn't look to me like a nutrient thing, if it was a deficiency (at least in soil grown plants) those symptoms would show up as pale leaves, red/purple (potassium), veined leaves where either the veins or the area between is pale etc. It could just be natural ageing, is it on the older leaves or young or both??
  4. After reading the discussion on 'skinny unhealthy fish', i realised that as a reasonably inexperienced person, i might be stupid enough to take home a less than 100% fish. could someone please put a few points up for those of us that aren't as experienced to help identify both healthy and unhealthy fish before purchase please, many thanks
  5. I have an old and in questionable condition 4ft tank that you can have. Was going to put it on TM for $1 reserve. Just be aware that i dont know of its current water holding ability.... but your more than welcome to look, its in ellerslie
  6. thanks everyone, so about 15mm aquatic mix, then about 20mm gravel would be about right? :bounce:
  7. Thanks, Probably stupid question but would you put wool only in one filter and ceramic noodles in the other or both in each?? Would this make one filter purely biological and the other mechanical? is it true that you shouldn't put carbon into filters for discus tanks? Sorry for all the questions!
  8. Can anyone recommend a good, but not overly expensive substrate setup for a planted tank, was thinking a few mm of Dalton's aquatic mix, covered by a thin layer of propagating sand (to keep the mix in place??) then an inch or so of small to medium gravel. Any suggestions would be much appreciated 8)
  9. Hi all, I'm in the process of setting up a 4x2x2ft (430lt) tank as a planted discus tank. I have 2 x Fluval 404 filters, will this be enough? What kind of filter medium should i have in each? Thanks in advance
  10. Hi there, I have a 4 x 2 x 2 ft (430lt) tank that i'm slowly setting up to hold discus, so far i have 2 x Fluval 404 filters lights tank and a piece of bogwood I would like to have it as a planted tank, any thoughts on the best substrate to accomodate this ie gravel, coarse, fine, colour etc? Any other info is much appreciated Thanks 8)
  11. Thanks everyone, i think i now have a tank sorted , my friend who is a builder is going to make one for me out of recycled rimu. Had been to toughtanks, quoted at least $957! Also found someone from trademe who makes metal stands.
  12. Well a big hello to everyone, just a brief (hopefully) introduction about me...I used to have about 4 simple community tanks set up about 6 or 7 years ago, but gave up after one too many flat moves, now i am in the long process of setting up a 4 x 2 x 2 tank, which i hope will cure the need for more than one tank! I'm going to keep discus (hopefully! nothing like a challenge!) but will take a little time as i buy things for it as i can afford! So..first question of many to come (hopefully i will be able to answer questions one day)...does anyone know a good person in Auckland who makes tank stands??? Thanks!
