  5. Am thinking of setting up a 180 lt tank as a planted killie tank, males only. Any suggestions of stocking numbers, species and where to get them from please? Am hoping to move my cory's out of the discus tank as i think its a little crowded in there. Also thinking of putting my pair of flash pleco's in, but not sure on that yet. Any thoughts much appreciated!

  7. Dont actually have to do a powerpoint presentation but havn't decided what i'm doing, will be pretty boring if i just get up an talk, but have no experience with powerpoint so will probably leave it alone. there has been no suggestion of handouts, just that the official paper will be published! Scary stuff! thanks for all the help, i dont know how people get up an talk in front of others all the time...

  9. I have to write up an experiement i did as a conference paper, to be published etc (and then i have to stand up in front of a few hundred people and present it as well). Anyway dont know where to start, was thinking of writing it up as we were taught to at high school, Aim/objective Method Limitations Outcome but thought someone might have some better ideas?? any thoughts much appreciated, this is stressing me out big time and i dont want to dissapoint anyone
  10. I learnt that you can catch moths with your ear, but very difficult to get them out once in
  11. Just because the fish looks physically like an albino, doesn't mean it is entirely albino, will still probably be carrying the normal gene, which is dominant over the albino....BUT you would expect SOME albino from an albino x albino, not all normal :-?
  12. You used to be able to buy them a few years back from your LFS
  13. Genetics are difficult at the best of times, the only real way to fully start to comprehend the combining ability and recessive or non recessive genes is to keep acurate records over a long period of time. It is worth noting that 1 parent can and will give completely different results depending on the partner (think racehorses). The square formula is an idealistic view and often doesn't apply in real life.

  15. just a pedantic note, that 'expired' potting mix may very well have a build up of nitrates/phosphates (cant quite remember which at the moment, mornings!) in as its been sitting around for quite a while, where as 'used' potting mix should have not build up as the plant will have taken up all the nutrients from fertilizers. Hope that makes sense!
  16. I think i read in a book that putting them in a bag, in water, in the freezer works, aparently when you take them out, the fish is still upright (not stressed), never tried it myself,
  17. thanks for that Ianab, will do just that i think!
  18. Tank size 4ft x 2ft x 2ft, currently stocked with 8 discus (7-8cm), 20 harlequin rasboras, 6 small clown loaches, 6 sterbai corys and a pair of GBA's, running 2 x 404's. Am wondering how many plecs i can put in (smaller growing sp.) or if i should remove either the cory's or clown loaches before adding any other plecs. thanks
  19. I must say, apart from one trader who obviously had some snails i have been more than happy with my purchases off TM, depends what your expecting i guess. I got home last night to find my latest purchase in the mail box, opened it (very tired, home late) and was very pleased to see well rooted, healthy, snail and algae free plants. (thanks alan) :bounce:
  20. I'd be very keen on one or two if your selling too please
  21. Also where do we find Dieter Untergasser's 'Discus Health' book?????
  22. I certainly wasn't asking one person to write pages and pages, just thought a combined effort could be put together as a useful reference....
  23. Can all those knowledgable peoples out there please write about syptoms and cures for commonly found diseases/ailments. I have no problem at the moment, but would like to know what to watch out for and be able to have the knowledge and medications on hand to be able to quickly treat if/when i need to. I'm sure there are alot of people out there that would appreciate this too. i tried to google it but not relative to NZ or have no symptoms, just cures! Please
  24. "They only school when they are stressed out." Does that apply to all school fish ie Harlequin rasboras? because i notice my 20 spread out throughout the tank most of the time, except for when im doing water changes or something...
