  1. It's impossible to say what your floor can hold without actually taking a look at it or even better go under the house and look at the structure beneath the floor. But an average 4 foot tank, which is a good size for a bichir, should be no problem for any house. If you are worried it's always good to get a proffessional to check.
  2. Few months ago I lost a green and golden bell frog to a fungus, but he lasted for a long time (a few month), before he finally died. This morning I found my other smaller one died as well, its expression was just like when it was alive, eyes open wide except he was dead. I've noticed he was less active and didn't move around much for the past few months and was slow at moving and catching food, I though it was the cold weather causing him to be less active, so I fed him once every few days by hand. Or could he actually have got infected by the other frog? I seperated them when I noticed the other frog was beginning to get sick. Any ideas what caused the death? Thanks
  3. my fighter gets along fine with everyone, very peaceful fish. but it depends on the individual fish, like humans some people are more aggresive than others.
  4. Guess what, this morning I checked in my tank and my last bristlenose is gone, so there goes all of them Ammonia is 0ppm, nitrite is 0ppm (I assume), I stopped testing for nitrite 4 days ago because before that everytime I test it for the past 3 weeks, everyday, it turns out to be 0ppm, nitrate is still about 30ppm after the water change. I was wondering, when comparing the test tube against the colour chart, am I suppose to hold the tube right against the white part of the the colour card so it's in contact with it? Or does it not have to be in contact with it. Because when it is in contact, the colour looks a lot darker then when it's not, 30ppm reading is for the dark colour, but if not in contact the colour looks lighter about 10ppm. Cheers
  5. How high is it? In most aquariums pH should actually gradually go down, due to fish waste etc... Especially when you have driftwood in your tank it should lower your pH. What's the pH of your tap water?
  6. Great job, awesome looking tank.
  7. I am feeding them spirulina discs and courgette pieces, but I don't feed fresh courgette every night, roughly 2-3 times a week, not enough? But since they havn't been active for the past few days I hardly saw them eat at all. There is a piece of driftwood in my tank, before when they were active they would always chew on the wood. Feel really disappointed now since I was responsible for them and now two of them died, and this one died today has been growing especially well and has already developed some bristles.
  8. Terrible new my biggest male has also died. Its stomach was bloated last night and this morning I found in dead on the side at the bottom of the tank. Still have one remaining. Will do a water change now. But what could be killing them specifically? All other fish are looking great.
  9. I usually drop in a piece of courgette, leave it overnight and take it out the next morning. Does anyone know how to keep them fresh? We never eat courgettes but when we buy one for the catfish, it won't last until the courgette is finished. I tried cutting it into pieces and freezing them, but when I take it out it goes way too soft after its thawed.
  10. What about fishless cycling? That should be a lot faster as well, just add in pure ammonia solution, so this way you don't have to wait for your fish to start to poop.
  11. Thanks, wanting to get some more lighting, maybe another 18W or even 36W. Currently the 36W Arcadia not really doing it for my amazon sword, they are sort of just surviving and growing slowly, want to make them grow better.
  12. I've got quite a bit of plants in there as well, they should help to keep nitrates down. I hope it'll be ok after a few water changes, because now I think it's spiking because all the ammonia has just been converted not long ago. Here is a picture, gives you an idea of the amount of plants, how much will these help? 5X Blue Hygrophias 1X Orisis 2X Timulas (added today) 5X Amazon Swords 4X Val grass also some ambulia and cabomba
  13. Tuesday. 25% That was just when ammonia was 0ppm. I mainly suspect the nitrate spiking, as the water change was just 2 days after the ammonia has gone down to 0ppm. Think I'll do a water change again tomorrow morning. More suggestions appreciated.
  14. Is that too high? Actually few weeks ago I added fish too fast caused an ammonia spike but that's gone now, but I guess nitrate will start to climb after the ammonia is gone. I never got any nitrIte.
  15. Sadly came home today at 4.50pm and my smallest bristlenose is dead flat on the gravel, most of its body has gone white. I thought 3 of them on 26th June at 3cm size, the one died is the smallest one, the other two seems fine and one of them is growing really big. I've noticed though all of them seem a little less active for the past few days, the one that died was the least active not moving at all for long periods of time. Ammonia 0ppm, nitrite 0ppm, nitrate 30ppm (too high?). Any suggestions on how it could have died? Thanks
  16. Re Mr Pleco Did you really learn all those lessons the hard way? Cuz it sounds a bit harsh all that lessons were learnt by one person.
  17. Thanks for the warning. Yes I can seperate them if the need arises. But if I have to let one of them go it'll be the gourami, I've grown attached to my fighter. This red male fighter has settled in surprising quickly, now taking food from my tank and its great to watch, and when light goes off at night I'll find it sitting (and it really looks like how we sit) on the top of the filter.
  18. Mine has been don't add fish too fast, but I was lucky I didn't have to learn the hard way and managed to restart the cycle without loosing any fish. But it would have been easily gone the wrong way and I would have lost most of the following below.
  19. Went to into Hollywoods and Jensens today and they don't have any females. They got some nice males though, so I might start with a male and look for a a female somewhere else.
  20. what is S shaped? it looks sort of like the discus, just not as round, has a vertically compressed body. which way does it go S shaped in? horizontally or vertically? Asking because I can imagine a thin fish, like a white cloud or danio to go S shaped but not a fish like the gourami.
  21. that should be fine. what's the volume in litres? just make sure the tank is cycled properly and add fish slowly, especially in a small tank ammonia can spike very high if not cycled properly.
  22. Most websites say they are easy to look after and a overall a great fish. Decided I will give them a go, won't be buying them soon like tomorrow but will wait until my danios sell.
