  1. Is the fishbowl inside or outside? Just wondering seeing as you want a species suitable for outside winters
  2. I love the look of the tanks you have but I want the biggest one Your tank is a good height for angels. I do hope the store told you that those sharks get to 1 metre at maturity so won't be able to turn around in your tank if they ever do get that size. They are fast and rather like to jump They are just as likely to cause havoc as angels but just because one can cause trouble doesn't mean another fish of the same species will. Your filter will struggle with a medium to heavy bioload. I know the filters well and they are best on tanks between about 120 - 150 litres. 4x the turnover is the minimum recommended and while I know the 1200 is 1200 litres an hour, the rating is without media in it which reduces the flow. Just keep a good eye on it and be prepared to water change more often. Post some photos for us.
  3. If you want info on plant care you will need to name the plants you have.
  4. If the email from them is confidential then you have kind of broken the whole deal by talking about it on here. Any one of us could phone and ask them about it now.
  5. Well thats really interesting to hear. I hope it was a genuine response and that they send all the necessary information through.
  6. In a pot of what? I'm not sure what EPA has to do with things being added to the list. That is under MPI control. Post us a copy of the official letter you got regarding it being put on the list please
  7. Hi Maxi The Wellington clubs are hosting conference - the Exec just runs and controls the meetings. I am sure you would be more than welcome to come along for us much as you wish - so flick [email protected] an email. That will give the organisers an idea of numbers.
  8. Java fern is a very generic term. There are three species currently allowed in NZ. Which species have you had added to it?
  9. Well that is something I wouldn't be proud of stating. That is the very reason MPI are clamping down so tightly on aquarists. IAL sometimes have to be fumigated before being released.

    Curious

If the suppliers had them, if the importers thought they would be popular, if the wholesalers would pay the cost for them which is considerable per fish if only a few come in due to the quarantine testing and risk of losing the whole lot if a certain percentage die, all the way down to would the shops buy them at that price right down to whether or not the customer would say 'well I wanted them but I'm not paying that!' Not being negative here and you possibly know this anyway but shops and wholesalers have been stung many times in NZ by customers wanting and then not buying ie zebra plecs.
  11. Your tank at 300 litres, unless it has a decent footprint might be slightly on the small size for adult pearl gourami who can reach 14cm. If you really like them get them but be aware that you might have to onsell some of them when they get larger. You also won't get a lot of 'action' from these guys, they are pretty placid. Only one pair of angels to a tank and anything that fits in their mouth will become dinner (neons included). That might be your action. As far as your scissortail goes, it is a schooling fish so a few more might help it settle down as it is more likely to annoy its own kind. What are the actual measurements of your tank is what is providing your filtration - that will have a bit to do with what fish you can best keep and how many.
  12. Do you still have the angels you did get? I have a sibling of yours - a large male that is constantly scrapping with my other breeding male.

    What species name?
  14. I remember being terrified as I had sold him some fish and I thought they might come check to see if I had swapped my fish for his plants. It was not a good feeling.
  15. Please give us more information like the age of the turtle, how your tank is set up, lighting etc, feeding etc and a photo or two or three would be great
  16. When looking for, or getting a tank built make sure you get one that is large enough to accommodate the number of discus + any other fish you think you want. 50 litres per discus is a good guide and be sure the tank height is enough as discus like plenty of water over their heads. 60cm depth is my recommended minimum - it provides them security. I personally don't think 45 is enough, 70 is too tall for my arm length and I can't reach the bottom. I take it you have already kept fish before?
  17. A decent (5cm min) thickness is required for amazon swords along with plenty of root fertiliser. Of interest, when you say pebbles - what size pebbles are you talking about?
  18. Unfortunately most of them get flushed down the rivers or onto farm land where if they are lucky, as it recedes they end up back in the river. The unlucky ones end up in puddles which eventually dry up. Certain times of the year can really affect the spawning sites.
  19. You can buy at most lfs filter media pads of various types that can be cut to the size you require. They work well and a reasonable price.
  20. You can also use some superglues.
  21. when actually is it - today is the 14th. Is it the 16th?
  22. The greatest success I had with it was using furan which, due to it being an antibiotic, is no longer available without a vets script. Even then it was a hit and miss affair with it working on less than 25% of the fish. You will lose nothing by using salt so if you have some on hand, use it - you might get lucky It pays to note that quite a number of fighters come from the wholesalers with this and no one picks it up. Even a pinprick on their head which is normally where it starts can expand quite rapidly.
  23. Hope to get to see your tanks once they are done Re the skinny rummynose, if they are hiding and not schooling with the others I would suspect worms. Your less coloured ember tetra could be a female, they don't colour up as much as the males, or may also be unwell. When you do get round to stocking the 210 litre tank let me know. I have at least three mature red whiptails in my tank - 1 female and 2 males - that I have considered moving on in order to just have a breeding trio longfins as my ground dwellers.
