  1. 17 siamese fighter fry - under 1cm each.
  2. No, thats fine - no good for cichlids but fine for the fish you have. At that level pH you can get away with a small amount of ammonia in your water. Just keep an eye on the level. I wouldn't stock up your tanks again for a while though until it stays stable. I run several cf1200's on my tanks and in particular on my 4ft tanks. They are good filters but don't put fish in the tanks that don't like a lot of current like fighters or discus. External cannister filters are easy to use and you get to choose the media etc that you want. I run a 2213 on my 54 litre tank.
  3. Can you not use the same tube for the pH that you use for ammonia - I just grab one from my set of 4 and rinse it out well when its finished. Its just that I understand that the lower your pH the less problems higher levels of ammonia, nitrates etc will cause. If your fish are really in trouble I would expect them to be at the top of the tank gasping for air. I know that if I'd looked at my tank properly on the morning of the day my ammonia went through the roof I would have known as all my fish were right at the top, just about had their heads out of the water  It could be your filter not working properly. You can get away with more fish in your tank if you have good filtration.
  4. We've a 37" Sony Bravia, its about 8 months old. Cost $1299 on sale (still think the price was a mistake) and they chucked in a DVD player too. Its brilliant and you can see it from sitting side on as well which is great at our house.
  5. whats your ammonia today? If its up where in the tank are your fish swimming, at the top of the tank? Also whats your pH at the moment. Or is everything okay.
  6. Yep, they seem to be everywhere at the moment and also police cruising the streets in their cars.
  7. I'd ditch the frogs and use the frogpond as well or just extend it to cover the lot. I'm tempted to use the pond at our house but its tiny and the dog drinks from it!
  8. yes I am interested, doesn't matter about colour or size as long as they are females although the odd male would be okay. Can't work out how to send a pm to you though.
  9. I picked these up the other day - cost me 50c off TM for 11 males and 11 females. Have already produced 6+ fry. I am still after more females if anyone has any spare as the males are all over the girls which is typical I reckon.
  10. Yep agreed - out of bed around 10am, good book, out to lunch, afternoon nap, diinner about 7pm. Such a hard life!!!
  11. Can most probably offer you a bed here if you don't know someone more your own age up this way. (My kids are around your age, so we're ancient in their eyes).
  12. I for one would pay a reasonable amount for a decent sized piece of driftwood for my 5ft tank.
  13. was sitting at home - nothing much to do so looked on the net. heres some bits and pieces I read, have you considered flukes as apparently they can cause excess mucus and muck up the eyes. Have a look below. Whitish Film over the eye of the tropical fish. This could be because of poor water quality, chlorine poisoning or eye fluke. For poor water quality you have to change the water. For chlorine poisoning you should condition tap water before using it. For eye fluke please use proper medication. Dull color (mucus), detached skin or fraying of the fin could be Mucus Hyperproduction. This is caused by Slime disease (parasite, meds), poor water conditioners (high nitrogenous waste), fukes and stress. A whitish film appears over the eye of the fish. This occurs due to poor water quality or poisoning (chlorine) or Eye Fluke. and have a look at following site http://badmanstropicalfish.com
  14. I had an ammonia spike about 2 weeks ago that caused the death of 1 discus and 10 - 20 rummynose, cardinals & neons. The cause I think was that the 2200lph cannister filters fine wool was clogged, and the fact that the long hours I was working meant that I was only water changing every 4-5 days instead of the usual 2-3 but I also wonder if the warmer weather and night temperatures are not helping. There's several of us from Auckland that have had issues with tanks of late so maybe theres a contributing factor like our water supply as well. My suggestions are as the others, more water changes which will bring your ammonia down to 0 but you will need to continue to change water regularly until you work out why its going up. I feed my fish 2x a day but only feed the bottom dwellers every 2-3 days so that they clean up any scraps on the bottom of the tank. By the way, there are a lot of very very experienced forum members and fish breeders who contribute to this forum. They are willing to give their time and advice to anyone who asks and in some circumstances will visit and assist. The lfs is wrong (and its probably one I visit regularly), the majority of assistance is good and worthwhile following. But at the end of the day its up to you to read through everything and decide what works best for you. I have met a lot of the Auckland forum members and a few from out of Auckland and they are very very nice friendly people.
  15. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you Rhys. You planning a fish direction change maybe? I've been looking at these fish for a while - in fact quite a while as I'm getting fed up with the fact I can't get hold of really good quality solid colour male fighters. Maybe I'll have to put my big tank in the back shed into use for something else.
  16. I also keep looking at those big fronts on tm but what sort of sized tank do they need?
  17. Its better that the wood has come from the sea than a lake as its likely to be cleaner. Either way it pays to wash it thoroughly (waterblast if its big enough) or boil it to make sure all the nasties are out of it.
  18. How did you get on Dixon? I mentioned it to my husband and he only said one word "NO!"
  19. You posted your pics while I was replying to your earlier posts. Is the slime not the protective mucus coating en masse? I noticed my other discus' eyes were a little cloudy at the time but they are now clear again.
  20. Sorry to hear. Have your tested your water? I lost one of my discus and about 10 cardinals and a few rummynoses a couple of weeks ago. Overnight my ammonia had shot up and its a wonder I didn't lose the lot. I think my filter was clogged as since I cleaned it right out (and yes I have been doing water changes every two days since then - 200 litres at a time), the tank seems to have sorted itself out again. Now I have to wait for the bacteria to re-establish.
  21. My tanks are bare bottom as I use them as grow out tanks for my fighters. I had thought about landscaping them but they are not really wide enough for it and also I would want to put bigger fish in them but they only hold just over 100 litres. I image a 5ft or bigger would be good for fish who like a river type environment.
  22. So did I and so did my other half  I insisted on it. You can imagine what he said!!!
  23. I have 3 4ft X 1ft X 1ft tanks on a stand, what are you wanting to know.
