I have a small cichlid tank up and running so I have something to look at for the mean time - going to replant the tank out over the week so its kind of a fresh start but my other guys all had names

4 and a half hours later my tank is cycling from scratch *fingers crossed*

I am going to empty the whole tank wash the gravel in boiling water and soak the driftwood in boiling water too and clean the entire filter and pipes then do a restart cycling the tank from scratch - I am devestated

I woke up this morning and my filter was working fine however the tank was all cloudy and all my discus had died I am not sure if I am going to pursue it any further at this point but if I do should I sterilise everything? how do I go about doing this as I am guessing something is toxic! even my cardinals and scissor tail had died completely lost their colour and looked almost scarred !!!! how will I know it is safe to start over?? this is the worst day ever !!!

I just dosed my tank with Prazi for flukes using the liquid adtape and now some of it has fallen to the bottom and looks like shaving foam its kind of white and lumpy the rest has dispersed through okay...the fish seem fine but am I okay here?

I have just noticed this morning that my red melon discus has what looks like a worm coming out of its mouth - its not visible all the time only when it breathes out ????? all was fine last night !

I have had the same gravel in my tank for around 2 years now it is regularly siphoned each water change the subbstrate is brightstone...my question is how do i know if it needs changing or if there are deadspots in it?

I have a cichlid tank with some electric yellows at the moment i have some bigger white pebbles for the substrate but really like the white sand look -where do I get this stuff from and does it stay clean for long? what sort of rocks are the best for making caves? - I think my present ones are just too large !

Hey Luke - at least it is not a total disaster this time ! I think some of it was my fault in not doing filter maintenance with the cannister filter I am keeping a close eye out they are eating which is good - however the white dimaond has rapidly outgrown the others and is a bully !

thanks again - I think you are right re the filter it had not been maintained on a regular basis so perhaps was overloaded.... no wonder my discus weren't happy the product the LFS sold me was sera toxivec which should get rid of any nasties (hopefully) straight away while the new media has time to get going but I will watch out for any mini cycles starting up

thanks for your help I just cleaned my filter in tank water and got told at the LFS to do a 10 day nitrivec course as a short term fix because i replaced someof the old media

Is this a newly set up tank or has it been running for some time? - Long established tank 2+ years 2) How many fish do you have in there, and what types? - 2 clown loaches 6 discus all in there since 10/07 3) Have you made any recent changes (eg done a major filter clean, added more fish, etc)? - no did have the heater off for two days two weeks ago by accident ! 4) a. Have you been testing for ammonia? b. If so have you noticed a recent ammonia spike? c. What was the highest ammonia reading and when did it happen? - will need to check for it 5) What are your nitrite readings? 0.5 6) What are your nitrate readings? 40 (Nitrite and nitrate are different things and indicate different processes in the tank) - maybe a filter clean is needed??? Hi - I just noticed on my 225 litre tank that the nitrite/nitrate levels are starting to show what is the best remedy for this apart from keeping up the water changes !!

do you turn the uv filter off when using adtape?

yeah normal breathing and one gill isn't clamped down

I just noticed my smaller discus t not really eating infact it appears to be spitting out bloodworm after taking it in and is not interested in JBL at all - also hanging out a lot at the back - any ideas?

this is silly! I have a unimax cannister filter and are wondering how you go about cleaning out th gunk without having tank water pour on the floor and killing the good bacteria?

are all the water parameters okay? have you noticed it rubbing up or flicking against driftwood or plants?

hey luke :lol: yes they are all looking good and we have had them for 8 months now !!! the UV sterilizer should help with the control of any nasties I hope...everyone is easting and fighting so its back to normal !

great I will leave as it is at the moment, at leat they have all recovered from the heater incident now

phew the heater is back up and running ! shall I just keep an eye out for white spot and otther nasties now??

yes I think we may have I see the tank temp is at 22.6 degrees to cold ?? - the red one has colour back now but they are huddling in the back of tank and darting when I come up to the tank
