  1. Thanks for the link. They sure do look good. However 35cm seems a bit big for my 4 footer? How big are yours? They must be adults if they are breeding? And how fast do they get to the 35cm? I suppose they need their own tank, as they would end up eating everything else at that size? I don't want to grow fish that will end up dumped somewhere cause the owners cannot keep them. The pacus are a bad example of that.
  2. Wonderful photos. What is the latin name of these and DO we have them in NZ???

I don't have a problem on the walls - the bristles do that, but on the plants. In fact the tortured vallisneria (spiral one) looks pretty "old" at present with "hairs" about 15cm long ... So who will eat it please? Have so far: -fertilised the heck out of it -at least 15 bristlebabies on the job -made waterchanges to leach nutients -but then thought fertiliser may be better... so what shall i do - looks terrible at present.

Has anybody got these and are they really that good to clean up the green fine algae?
  6. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... d=90084624 Has anybody had any of these?
  7. He is gulping air when he does that.
  8. No, but they "walk" out of their tank quite easily! They do that by sucking upwards and can escape quite easily out of a tank if the gap in the top glass is wide enough! I have watched babies that I had in a bucket with about 10cm of water in the bottom, reach a considerable height until they decided to let go and fall back! In a nearly full bucket they would have gone over the top and onto the floor!
  9. Oh god - registered breeding. I better not start on that then. Must have taken about 300 of the little critters out of the tank and into a bath tub last week ...

    Hercules on TM?

Well don't you think that was a big wind-up?? Look at the pictures! That is some plastic toy in my opinion. No wonder it had to "die"!!
  13. Maybe too warm? They do not like it too hot
  14. That is what I wondered too. There seems to be a great big confusion as to what is legal and what not, as not all vallisneria are on the banned list! But nobody seems to know which ones these are and how to identify them! Same as with the oxygen weeds. We have thousands of members here and even so - nobody seems to come forward to end the confusion.
  15. Wasn't that the link I gave in my last post? As far as I understand it means you can have it in your tank but you cannot sell it or propagate it or distribute it! Which includes giving it to your friends And of course the auction is illegal too.
  16. Well it is still being sold in Auckland pet shops and here as well. So what are the news on it now?? The official list says: All plants on the NPPA are unwanted organisms under the Biosecurity Act 1993. These plants cannot be sold, propagated or distributed in New Zealand. This includes: Vallisneria gigantea Eelgrass Vallisneria spiralis Eelgrass Vallisneria spiralis is NOT the twisted Vallisneria. It is another name for the BIG one, due to its flowerstems being in spiral form (to accomodate for varying waterlevels) to make sure the flowers stay above water!
  17. Hi from just out of Whangarei We are nearly a club already!

    Oxygen weed

Trying to figure out which one is which has brought the following up: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/plant_survey/aq ... 683d7bbdaf http://www.fnzas.org.nz/plant_survey/aq ... 99ce496a87 http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... d=88347504 http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... d=88285590 How can anybody figure out what is legal and what is not??
  19. Seriously? You spawn the fish in rainwater and boil up some with the peat and add that to the tank??? Why on earth do you boil some of the fish???
  20. Can anybody understand this auction? It says: Decapsulated artemia eggs. The hatched nauplii are shell-free therefore it is hassle free and no waste shells to remove. No hatching required, just feed directly to fish. Now DO you hatch these or not

    Eels as a pet

Interesting thread on trademe about Keeping an Eel as a pet
  22. Thought you might like to read this little bit of info which I have found here: "FLAGFISH These are great little fish that look like a platy/cichlid cross (Biggest we've grown is 1.5 and up to 2"), we have them in the same pools of water with our Singapore Shrimp and SAE's, and they all get along fine. We have also had them with other Platys, Mollies, and South American Cichlids too. However, they seem to hate frilly, or long-tailed fish, we had some bettas in a pool for just one evening. and by morning a school of flag fish had eaten every one of them including most of their skeleton so this showed how aggressive they can be..."
  23. Found this website which claims: Our goal is to help you combat algae problems naturally, without the use of harmful chemicals. click here to see The Algae Squad! Interesting list of fish that supposedly eat algae in your tanks.
  24. When we got our first goat we were told that when you talk about goats its always about sex. Looks like it is the same here
