  1. I purchased two SAE's recently - wow they are awesome. Tank is totally sorted. No sign of it, they even ate the long tufty bits. Guess I'm lucky. Now I just have to catch them and take them home to the tank there which is even worse... Good luck getting yours sorted. Sam
  2. Meetings have been held on third Monday of the month - there will be no meeting tonight. If there is further interest in having the club we will consider another meeting but it doesn't seem likely. Many thanks to those who contributed in the attempt to get this club off the ground, in particular, Caryl who helped with suggestions, and the beautiful posters she made us. Also to our guest speaker, and Smidey and Georgeous for making the effort to come along and contribute suggestions (and Mum's baking. Cheers, Sandra
  3. If your wetas are from the woodshed they are probably cave wetas - gorgeous things. My cat used to catch them and I felt terrible. I'd try just a leg first to see if they will crunch them. There are sharp spines on the legs. Keep us posted...
  4. Hijack away Skaffen - I'm just happy to have the answers!!
  5. Thanks Warren - that makes sense. Oh well, hopefully end of problem now that the poor wee dear has passed away. And I was going to put more bristlenoses in there too - maybe not. Many thanks, Sam
  6. Thanks for all your ideas. Food for thought. I got the SAE's last night to attempt to sort out the beard algae. The two Amazon swords were separated last week - they had been growing close together and had taken over the front of the tank. On hindsight we only noticed the damage after separating the tank, which was shortly after the bristlenose died. So probably you are correct Warren and Caserole - must have been the bristlenose, and not noticed til after she died and the plants were separated. Would she have nibbled the algae off the leaves too? Left off the list coz she died before we noticed the damage, but starts to make sense now. Thanks for the hints so far guys, Sam
  7. Hi there, I have a plant problem I am hoping you guys can solve. My community tank at work has two Amazon swords in it, and the leaves are being chewed. Looks like what slugs do to small lettuce plants in the garden. Fish: Neon tetras, one cardinal tetra, zebra danios, lemon tetras, Glowlight tetras, Red phantom tetras, corydoras venezualanus (orange cories - look like bronze cories but orange patch), and some wagtail platies. Other plants - Indan Fern, cabomba. There have never been snails in this tank. I do have some black beard algae, and it is on the Amazon swords too. I pick up some Siamese algae eaters today which should sort that. Advice please? Sam
  8. How are you going with your fry tank now Bedazzled? Did you manage to find a heater? Sounds like you are going about it the right way. Sam
  9. Wow that's a good point - come on Georgeous - write something for the mag...
  10. We've been trying to join!! We started up a new Whangarei club with the intention of affiliating to FNZAS, but it just hasn't been successful so far. I joined as a non-member/subscriber, hence the shiny new Aquarium World copies that arrive every so often (thanks Caryl). Looks like we might have to join another club in another area as three people do not a club make. Sam
  11. Hi guys, After three meetings, we have had three possible members turn up. This is in spite of posters around town, a feature article in the newspaper, and personal messages through this forum to many Northland people using this article. It seems the need for a club in Whangarei is just not there. Any advice/feedback? Should we attempt one more meeting? Or just pull the plug now? We got four people to our first meeting, but that included our invited guest speaker, and it hardly seems worth opening up my work each meeting day. One neat thing from the first meeting was the opportunity to meet Smidey. So your thoughts please people - is the night wrong? We have tried adjusting the time already. Cheers, Sam
  12. Not sure if you guys saw it, but we were featured in a newspaper article in the Report - had a few phone calls - will be interesting to see if anyone else turns up. See you tonight, Sam
  13. Sorry for your losses - we all know what it is like to lose a fish here and there, but to lose that many all at once must be devastating.
  14. Scuse my ignorance, but what is the third fish down in your initial photos? It is a beauty. Sam
  15. I got one of these, mine is a different colour - it's great. My father saw it and gave me an old one of a washing machine from forty years ago or so - he calls it a filler drainer. Exactly the same thing but made of copper or some metal. I hope it works out well for you.
  16. Hi Floater, welcome from the other end of the country. Great that you are researching first before leaping in. All the best with your new tank. Sam
  17. I'm 39, been keeping fish for two years this time, but had goldfish for most of my childhood, and tropicals for about three years in my twenties. Other interests: Hockey, Diving, Underwater photography Scuba Sam: Diving, and short version of my name. I work in healthcare. Nice to hear what other people get up to... 8)

    Split?

There's enough sections as it is to get through - we can all pick which ones we open depending on subject matter can't we? I'm all for the status quo...
  19. I agree with Ira - a four foot would be great, particularly if the front to back dimension is eighteen inches to allow front to back swimming as the fish get bigger.
  20. Thanks for the thought Mathew - the fish have been rehomed to someone local to the seller in Auckland. Hope you enjoy your trip to Paihia. Sam
  21. Hi All, I am interested in purchasing some fish from the North Shore, but they need to be picked up in the next week or so - anyone able to pick some fish up in Auckland and bring north in the next week or so please? I am happy to help with petrol costs. Sam
  22. I'm pleased to hear that I am not the only one with this problem. I recently purchased 25 leopard danios from someone on this forum, and at least twenty per cent of them are deformed. Really disappointing and I will know to ask only for normal shaped fish in future!! I will be breeding only from the ok fish, but from what you are saying Amazonian, they may be all carrying a dodgy gene. Good luck Tuki on sorting out your guppies etc.
  23. Hi there, if your glowlight is a glowlight tetra, it might get swallowed - one of my severums likes to hide behind plants and jump out and grab tetras... Good luck with keeping them together, and do consider a bigger tank for your severums when they grow up. Sam
