Cheers guys. Looks like the Canister filter is the popular winner lol Poor old internal filters outdated i guess, as when my Father was keeping fish 15 years ago, it was all he knew.... How things change!

someone told me that... "nitrates at 0 may increase chances of blue-green algae. Not an algae but cyanobacteria" Not sure how true but he seems to know his stuff. Just thought i'd add my 2c worth... Cheers

Hi wok, are the HOB one noisy? i did look at them but thought i'd be running to the loo all the time..lol cheers

I need a new filter on my 127ltr tank. will be mostly a community tank i think... never seems to end up that way though, i like my grumpy fish too much lol What do people have to say in regards to Internal filters versus Canister filters? Am running a Canister filter on my other tank and love it, but as this tank is smaller, do i really need one. ( 2 footer ) Cheers

heres a reasonably good pic of the eggs and dad's tail. Wish he'd come out so i can see if he's ok or not! ( looks like photobucket shrunk it heaps!!! )

cheers guys. The interbreeding was not intentional, actually thought the BN was just too young to have lots of bristles yet. It has them on it's gills and a few on the nose. The GBA is the male, which was very obvious, and he seems happy with his current job of looking after the eggs. The female is now out of the tank and will most likely not go back in. So how long till babies? i too am very curious as to what they will look like and i will most likely keep a small group of them in my two tanks. will keep you up to date with the outcome in regards to colours etc.

Right, so my inlaws gba has breed with his bn, and is now sitting with eggs. How long till the eggs hatch? The tank has to be treated with Furran 2, to try and get rid of 'columaris' that has killed off a few smaller fish. Will the Anti-biotics harm the eggs? While taking the larger, more expensive fish out last night, we took the log out of the water for about 15-20 min, as we did not realise the dad was in there, or that the eggs were in there either. We saw the eggs after we put the log back in. Dad is ok, and the eggs look clear and a nice yellow colour. Will having the eggs out for that amount of time cause them to die off? If all goes well, and the eggs hatch, what is the best thing to do with them? The tank only has neons, guppies, and swords left in there, as all the rest are in hospital tanks at my house. Any and all advice is needed and appreciated! Cheers

well they did breed, dad has been with the eggs for about 5 days now. only realised last night that he had eggs when we were trying to catch him to move him out of the tank. The log with the eegs in was out of the water for about 15-20 mins, so i'm unsure if eggs will survive. The tank is about to be treated with anti-biotics too, so i'm guessing that will kill the eggs off too? I'm going to start a new thread for this i think.... cheers

FYI: the 'raw wounds' i described above were actually ulcerations where the bacteria was secreting a flesh eating type fluid. It eats into the muscle and eventually kills. My poor shark must have been in such pain!

Yes it can be called cotton mouth, body fungus (even though it isn't a fungus) and saddleback disease. It can infect internals through the gills, and externally aswell. It's real nasty and aggressive! Some fish can die within a few hours of getting it, it has wiped out huge amount of fish in the wild and in fish farms, within 24 hrs. Sometimes there arn't even any visible symptoms. This is my new 'most dreaded disease'!

yes the furran is the correct meds but i stopped it when i thort it was a costia infection. By the time i realised it was Columnaris, it was too late. He died the morning i was going to start up the furran again. I was not in the best of moods over this loss, mainly because i tried so hard and still lost him. But i learnt somthing in the process, that will help in the future. Cheers
-
I hope he's ok, but just incase he gets sickly, i reccomend a 'google' search on 'columnaris'. It sometimes starts as a pale spot on the head area, which later gets white with red edges. Just lost a fish to this myself so i am researching all i can find on the topic. I hope it is just camoflarge though. Good Luck.

was not Costia, was Columnaris. He died this morning.
-
Well he's dead. Finally got an accruate diagnosis last night at about 11pm, and was going to start treatment this morning, but hey, i guess he'd had enough. The diagnosis was columnaris. It's a gram negetive bacterial infection. Usually kills within 72hrs, so i guess he did well to last as long as he did. cheers

i will get hubby to read all this when he gets home, and post his feedback after... We have built alot of tanks, mostly for ourselves and friends and family, and have only ever used neutral cure. To date we have had no leaks, with the exception of our big tank, but that was due to a warped stand and you can see the visible 'bow'. Given silicone has a +\-25% movement rate, i'm not surprised the big one leaked given the state of the stand. (about a 30mm drop in the middle) Anyhow... as i said, i'll get hubby to read this and get back to you... if he has anything relevant to say... Cheers

looks like a cool setup! Good to see more ppl here... enjoy...

You know if you have a long bath and you have a sore that has a scab, it goes white.... yeah well i have a bala shark that has that sort of thing on him. It is peeling off and leaving raw wounds, but there was no wound to start with. It was 'white' all over his eyes, and nose too, but that has cleared up. I thought it was a Costia Infection (other post) but i'm not so sure now. He was treated with Furran 2 for 6 days, but only since i stoped the furran has it started to peel off. i'm treating him with melafix only now, just for the raw wounds being exposed. Has anyone any idea what is causing this? I've never seen it before, and although he appears to be getting better, i am concerned as to the cause. Cheers

I got some deformed guppys for 'live food' for my knife fish but when i got them home, i couldn't do it, so they now live in my inlaws community tank! Husband still gives me grief about it.... No more live food for my knife... he can have blood worm.
-
This tank is just temp, ti everything gets a itte bigger, (odd their is a etter not working on my keyboard.. can you guess which one.. ) I do have a bigger tank, just sitting there waiting. My Yoyo's seem to give more grief then any of the others. My knife has not even noticed them i think, yet. I have wanted these forever, so i happy i know have them. Not sure on the sex yet... too young, but if they turn out to be two boys then i guess one has to go to a new tank, ( have another being made this weekend ) Cheers.

Sweet, Thanks Caryl. Might sleep now.... always anxcious when adding new fish. They were 'Q' elsewhere for me, but i trust the guy. Just such a worry when you get them home and all hell breaks loose!

Awesome photo's! What's the spec's on your camera? Megapixel etc, brand...? Mine pic's are so bad they are not worth posting 99% of the time! Major Congrats on the Photography!

Ok... so they have been in the tank for a few hours now, ( about 6hrs) and i have noticed that they are fighting with each other. Will more of these guys stop the fighting or is it just a little squable to sort out who owns what in the tank? Cheers
-
Out of interest.... How big is he? I have one too who is about 6 inches. They're such cool fish! I hope he's ok! Cheers
