  1. I quite often throw leftovers from dinner in the tank. One thing I didn't see mentioned was cooked rice - even the kuhlies come out for that - and the corys love it to pieces! Also flies - I have an old fashoined flyswat - the black neons mainly but the glowlights and the widows really love em. I also occasionally give mossie larvae. The BN's love just about any cooked veggie, I haven't tried apple yet tho.
  2. My overfed clown used to try & take bites out of tinfoil barbs that were 3/4 the length of the clown - When we got a kitten I swear the clown just sat there staring at the kitten, waiting for it to get closer... Also sometimes I swear it was eyeing me up for a bite when I was fluffing around in the tank. Funny enough - the only tank mate that really was okay was a hoplo cat like mystic - those little buggers are tanks. I have heard of black ghosts sucking eyes out of other fish while they're asleep - not sure if this was an isolated incident or not.
  3. Well, I'm looking at getting an old bath or a water trough to set up an outside pond... naturally I would prefer an old cast iron bath with legs but they are uber above my typical price range... So I was looking at your typical enamal metal ones, which are usually built into a rectanular cabinet..... I have a wee pond fountain I want to put in it and not too worried about fishkeeping at the moment - perhaps daphnea & plants. Would like paradise fish but doubt they could withstand the climate. Perhaps WCMMS. Anyway, does anyone have any links or photos of bathtub ponds?? Just something to get me started? Also how do you paint them?? Enamel is pretty resistant... and White aint the best colour for a pond. Any advice, comments, ridicule etc is welcome!
  4. LOL I've cut through Oamaru stone with a handsaw..... But I guess you don't mean that sort of hard?

    Paradise Fish

Yeah.. and the males are the ones tearing each other to shreds.... Remember these were the original "Fighting" fish.
  6. Also... you can use a computer UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply). A 600 amp costs us about $130 (guess) Haven't sold one in a while... That would run your bubbler and pump for a fair while. I wonder if the Fishie Clubs would consider purchasing a couple of kickass sized ones to hire out?? For known power outages you'd pay $20 + the same again courier to "hire" it for a weekend easy?? Man, I am having a good idea day. This is good idea #2. The other I cant divulge.
  7. Bah - go for a 45 minute drive to Birdlings Flats north of Lake Ellesmere... great driftwood as well.
  8. Absolute Legend - Thankyou very much for that - And I've bookmarked that page. Your right - I had done some searching but didn't find a calculator that good. Looks like the 130 litre I'd thought it was was a little off
  9. Heh, I'm not that keen to find out how much it holds - it takes too long just to do a 1/3 water change. I keep forgetting to mark a line on the tank and count how many buckets does what.
  10. Hi there, I just want either some help (where to find info to do it myself) or someone with the skills just to do it for me..... I'm just trying to calculate how many litres my BOWFRONT tank holds... Here's a rough drawing with the dimensions: The part without the bow was easy enough about 137 litres... but the bow has me stumped. (not to scale) Thanks in advance people!
  11. Thanks for that Ira - I was in a "lets buy it" mood. Instead I got some 20+ charcarins off TM for $20 ea... Beefed up the tank a little!
  12. And it was just as food, I blanched it first... I have some egyptin onions sprouting - I'll chuck in a bulb and see if the fishies start farting..
  13. Damn, you own me a new keyboard - I just sprayed coffee all over it
  14. I was reading in the internet that onions make pretty cool tank plants - Has anyone tried it yet??
  15. Hi all, the LFS has UV sterilisers with powerhead for $80... I was wondering if there would be any advantage adding one to my community tank? I already have a via aqua 650 as my primary filter anyway.
  16. That confirms it then - they are tough little nuts!
  17. Well, I have a tree stump in my tank, and at the top it's hollow... Anyway I devided to remove all the java moss from it and clean it up... Now I also hadn't seen my big male BN for a while, he usually hides behind it so when I move near him he just lopes off. Anyway - had the trunk outside on the concrete ripping off the moss and I noticed a fry flapping around in the hot - concrete warmed water. By the time I got a tube to suck him up with too late. Anyway - back to cleaning off the log and I noticed it was growling at me.... yep you guessed... Big male BN wedged in the top hollow. OOPS, back in the tank and a couple of days later I noticed a baby BN jumping around the top!! Since then we've seen 3 which is more than I expected as I gave that log a good blast with the hose as well  I've had every species in my tank spawn but this is my first set of babies - my pencils always spawn in front of the uptake and all others get chased but all the other fish.
  18. Aaah the bichirs - yep I did see them - had about 10 or so 4"+ there.... first time I'd ever seen 'em first hand.... they were real friendly - followed you along the tank. After a bit of research I'd love to get some but I promised myself no more big fish.. Great looking fish.... I was just at Petworld on Ferry Rd and they have F8's again, (Much to the displeasure of their tankmates). I have a small (Beer Crate) size tank I was thinking of squeesing on my computer desk with one in it but finances are a little tight at the moment for another powerfilter and heater.... berhaps after bubs arrives it can be my Xmas pressie? Hmm time to drop subtle hints wrapped in chocolate.
  19. My large clown jumped a lot at night, quite often woke us up as he slammed into the top of the fish tank and lifted the lid!!!! ... occasionally he did damage himself but he healed quickly. If you want them to grow quicker I recon mine grew proportionally to the abount of like food consumed! Also helped healing!
  20. Aww I saw those guys there and almost said bye to my community! Luckily my conscience (the Wife) caught me in time. They look comfortable & happy but are you keeping them together??? I never had success with that! My last puff was a fang's, not a great pet as I never saw him, just the destruction each morning.
  21. Cheers guys - unfortunately I don't still have em.... (Did I mention they are escape artisits). The last one got out after I'd had it for about 7 years... and the cat, surprisingly, was very crook for about a week afterwards. I have my suspicions  I do miss them, they were characters - I had them in a tank near my computer so I could keep an eye on them. I had the tank 50/50 water land and in the water and I had WCMM's breeding - but the newts weren't interested in them at all. The land side was no higher than an inch above the water level so it was always damp in there.
  22. I thought my large tank was cursed when I got it... took a while but I figured it was the gravel that we bought from the LFS, white stuff. After a few days the tank smelled sour, the fish were struggling etc. After a crash water change everything came right for a while then same again. Removing ALL gravel & just going bare sorted it. It actually felt like the gravel had been stored near pesticides or something it was so toxic.
  23. Alan, are yours Japanese or Chinese - I think that may be the difference. Mine looked more like a salamander than a newt - they didn't have large ridges on their tails. If anyones interested I'll see if I can dig up some photos of them..
