Hi everyone - my eldest managed to keep a couple of shrimp for a year with very little attention. Recently we set up a small WCMM tank and my youngest got her sights set on getting some shrimp for the tank... so we went down to our spot and after 15 seconds had a couple of scoops worth - actually a few more than I intended. Anyway, they have been rocking along for the last week and I decided to do a small water change. Now something important to know - our water supply is now treated with MIOX - chlorine - something I have never had to deal with, we used to get warnings about chlorine dosing so I just skipped doing a water change. Anyway, after slowly putting about 1 litre of fresh out of the tap water in the shrimp got really busy... I have been feeding everyone twice a day and at about the same time.. but I'm wondering if it was Cool water More O2 Miox Dinner time The tank is small, and for lighting I'm using a re-purposed computer screen that I intend replacing with LED's this weekend.

Just be careful - I have a couple of little red laser pointers that the cat & dog love... I also have a couple of "gruntier" lasers that they shy away from... just green ones but as soon as one hits the tank, all the fish go into hiding. I suspect the UV light they are bleeding is massive.

Just curious - I remember finding FW crabs as a kid in the bay of islands... would they be compatible with WCMMs? My kids have just set up their first tank with a few WCMMS and I was wondering if crabs would be compatible - or ever been seen again? Are they even worth any effort - ie do they ever come out?

Going to dig more out if anyone local wants some - willing to ship in exchange for carnivorous plants!

LOL - I gotta post another photo before some keyboards get worn out... Its a lot different in water, and the stuff at the back of the tank can even get blown straight by the water pumps Excuse the crappy photos, I really dont think it was worth time getting the actual camera out. Ps theres heaps more again if anyone in nth canty wants any

I know this is a massive Necro - but are there any Carnie groups still running? I was a member of the NZCPS a couple of decades ago with a pretty big collection and am keen to get back into them. Just a little harder in North Canty, the air is dry, sun hot and water hard.

Thanks Ira - thats both good & bad - good because I'll probably save money, bad because I was planning on gluing the old one up & using it as a water cooling reservoir for my PC. I'll strip it down in the weekend and see if I can find all the o-rings etc that need replacing.

Aaa, I just looked up the CF1200, and it looks identical to the via aqua 650 pro that I have - are they parts compatible?

I've just had my 12+ year old filter fail (seals stuffed) seeing as everyone recommends them (CF1200's), wheres the best place to order one from? I'm a wee way from any city at the moment and would like to get one over the internets & hopefully have it delivered by fri-sat..

I used to be pretty big in carnivorous plants... The Pitchers could mean Nepenthes - Tropical rainforest or Sarracenia - Typically Americas swamp/grasslands dwellers. Neither like nutrients in the soil - they evolved in low nutrient environments and cant cope with them in the roots. Sarracenia are the easiest to grow, they are based around a rhyzome, and over winter either slow down or grow more "normal" leaves. Nepanthes arent frost hardy, need high humidity and just are generally more fussy. I grew scarracenia in either live sphagnum, or peat moss/vermiculite mix. They need to sit in water - ie dont let them dry out and they thrive in high humidity. They are very easy to grow from rhyzome division.

Yeah, I thought about that a little more - am going to scale this experiment down a little.

I have a 50w tec that I was thinking of hooking up to it to give it a bit of help. Definately Led lighting - currently have a couple of $6 bulbs lighting my main tank and they are working well - have been for a year or so since the HID's failed.

Cheers Caryl - google turned up this thread too so I'm digesting it now... In summer the tank would probably average 20 degrees at a guess and I'm not sure if I want to go the chiller route - I have a 50w TEC that may help...

Hi peeps, I've started losing interest in my warm water amazon tank, and after not replacing any fish for a while - they could all fit happily in a 100 liter tank instead of the 200. The bristlenose & koolies must be 9-10 years old. I have been toying the idea of a coldwater salty tank but have no idea what is necessary. Can anyone point me in the direction of whats needed to keep one running, max temps etc? Was thinking of tidal pool type animals, hermit crabs, bivalves if poss, shrimp, some algae. What really got me more interested was the other weekend when the kids found a new different fish I had never seen before, got home and checked Powells and its a clingfish - cute as! Cheers 'n Beers.

Really - that might explain what happened to me a while back when I used some copper wire to train & attach plants to driftwood!! :facepalm:

Sure do - milkweed have poisonous sap. I always tried to encourage the taller growing dandilion type plant (its name escapes me now - puha?). Potato vine was good at attracting aphis as well. My noots were also trained to take ox-heart from tweesers, but I always gave it a sprinkle of vitamin/mineral mix first. I also remember being told not to feed fish/reptiles aphis off roses - but cant remember why. Pretty sure I did anyway.
