  1. My apple snail eats em like spaghetti. You could try plants like anubiases maybe with the thick waxy leaves maybe? Depends on which kind of apple snail also, there are two kinds, one doesn't eat plants, the other one (mine included) does.
  2. Just got a pair of them today, couldn't get much information on them on the net, anyone know much about them? All I know at the moment is from this website http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/pages/show_article.php?article_id=462 If anyone knows anything about breeding, sexing etc would love to know.

    New tank

hey yeap it comes with a 2 pieces of glass made to fit, i broke one of them in the first month i got mine, so not surprised. yeah i fit in tubes and have an eheim 2213 running. Its well worth it. The HOB filter is great for putting in things like phoszorb or carbon if ya wanna, but it really slows down to a trickle after 3 months, but my tank is heavily populated. Im glad i had the canister otherwise my tank wouldn't have been well filtrated, and my fish would've started paking in. Just something to watch out for. You can stuff a CO2 diffuser down the back as well, and your plants will be happy as clams.

    New tank

Hey gatito Just got your pm, just messaged you back. You just wait, the jebo gets too small after a while, you'll be hankering after a new tank long enuf Btw, the hang off the back filter gets stuffed up after a while, so i use a canister filter as well, a bit more reliable. I put it thru the two opennings and it works will for me. Also, the light tubes aren't that bright, so I added another 30 watt arcadia powerglo bulb, and my plants have really taken off. good luck with it!
  7. Hey everyone, Im in a little bit of a pickle at the moment, my discus are breeding in my planted community, which is throwing havoc at the moment in my tank. So the babies are beginning to squirm in their eggs which is unbelievable, and mom and dad are doing a great job chasing away the other discus, but there are sending the other discus to the far corners of the tank. The other discus are getting quite stressed tho, particularly my fav blue turquoise. Anyways my question is can I move the mom and dad into a 10 gallon tank which is all I have at the moment? With the leaf with eggs? I'm not wanting to grow them out I'm just flat out at work, but I'm worried that the other fish might become too stressed. The parents are getting heaps of knocks and scratches from the driftwood too, which is another cause for concern, and theres no way of removing the wood because I'll need to dismantle the tank to get to it. Thanks!
  8. If you're gonna have a planted tank, its good to change the bulbs every 6-8 months... and the aqua one/jebo all in one tanks, have their own bulbs which you need to order which can be a huge pain. When I got my big all-in-one thank, I thought it would be the bee's knees, but in the end I kinda regretted it, cos the filter clogged up easily, and the lights weren't strong enough, so i ended up adding an external filter and more lights to it. So it ended up being way more expensive than if I bought the parts separately.
  9. I dunno man you could do a lot with that driftwood. Your fish would love it and you could really deck it out with java ferns, anubiases or java moss.. anything really. And you could put amazon swords along the mid area, and riccia, glosso, chain swords or lileopsis (sp?) or dwarf sag. Would look awesome.
  10. http://www.ultimatebettas.com/ is quite good, a lot of the bettas they get, we can never get here though
  11. 2-3 days, the parents should be good and look after them, but you might want to set up the other tank for them just for the babies. I'm in Christchurch atm, got your message but was just boarding the plane. Good luck with the babies!!
  12. Whoops haha see it now... nvm thanks antwan
  13. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pets-animals/Fish/Fish/photos/a-79754846/p-30866120.htm This just boggles my mind... how does it keep salt water in and let the shrimp out???!!??
  14. Dunedin water is really hard though... I dunno if the brewery water is any softer.
  15. Some fish shops label siamese algae eaters as blackline flying foxes, I got mine labelled like that. There are also real flying foxes, false siamese algae eaters, and chinese algae eaters, and they all look kinda the same. A couple of links to differentiate between the flying foxes which I found useful when I was out looking for them. http://www.wetwebmedia.com/FWSubWebIndex/saes.htm http://www.petresources.net/fish/article/sae.html
  16. Could it be a blackline flying fox? Same as an siamese algae eater.
  17. I've got a Jebo 790 255 Litre with hood filter. Good but, after a while, it really get glunked up. Use an external filter as well, can never overfiltrate a tank. Also it saves you from one day coming home to a cloudy tank with dead/sick fish and a clogged up hood filter.
  18. LOL! /me takes the UV bulb out of the tank. /me wonders why the blue ram grew an extra head and glows in the dark... Yup, the loaches are in the with snails... but they eat everything but snails! Foiled again!
  19. Hm... does UV kill snails? Please say they do, cos they are driving me up the wall! How much did it set you back?
  20. Temperature wise, I dunno about some of the fish you want, but guppies, danios, platies like cooler temps, whereas cardinals + discus need higher water temps. But hey I dunno if its a big deal, I had goldfish in a 27 degree "coldwater" tank in summer My 255L has 7 discus, 10 cardinals, 1 queen arab pleco, 4 otos, 2 sae, 2 rams, 5 sterbai cories, 2 whiptails, and gabazillions of snails. But I've got 2 external filters. All happy, low nitrates, no gulping for air.
  21. Absolutely awesome tank Antwan. Beautiful plant at the back, is that a kind of crypt??
  22. Co2 injection is great, makes a big difference in plants, especially if you're planning on growing swords. Not all plants do well at the high temps discus needs, but java ferns, java moss, swords, indian ferns etc do ok. How many watts will you have in total? I don't run an airstone, haven't noticed much of a difference in my 255L tank. I don't use peat, a big piece of driftwood tends to lower the pH of the water, and most discus nowadays are not wild caught, so they dun mind more neutral water pH anyways. Tankmates, tetras that like higher temps like cardinals, rummy noses are good. Make sure you get quite a few of them, they dun do too well in small numbers. Algae eaters like otos do good (sometimes will suck on discus if theres no food around), bristlenoses, siamese algae eaters, farlowella, whiptails, and some fancy plecos. Like sharn said, be wary of normal plecos, and chinese algae eaters. A lot of people have clown loaches with them, I've got dwarf chains and they do very well. Cories are great, but get the ones that like higher temps like sterbai, just do your research before you get them. Rams are great, like the same water parameters and high water quality discus do. Other dwarf cichlids may be ok as well. Discus like company, so the more you get the better, otherwise they can be really really shy and unhappy. And if they're going to be in a planted tank, don't expect them to grow as big as the ones breeders produce. They like to graze, so when you're choosing tank mates be careful they don't out compete the discus for food.
  23. FH= Flowerhorn I think. Hybrid fish
  24. I'm not sure what route I'm using yet, I guess whatevers gets me there the fastest, but I won't mind making a detour for good fish stores 8) Wellington was on the list, but I think the people coming with me will club me if I bring up an extra 3 hours driving for a fish detour  Brookfield ei? Sounds interesting, wouldn't mind popping in just to see whats it all about Offers still open, if anyone in palmy wants anything from the fish shops here. PM if ya want something. Will be down most of sat and half of sun
  25. So I'm thinking about going down south from Auckland to Palmeston North next weekend. I'm probably gonna drag everyone carpoolin with to me all the fish shops I can find heading down, so if anyone has any recommendations for good stopovers for fish places on the trip down I'll be a happy chappy. I've heard Palmy has wet pets, so I'll be heading there. Oh and if anyone needs stuff delivered from AKL to palmeston north, will be happy to help as long as its not too troublesome - i.e; plants are all good. I'm leaving Fri night, coming back Sun afternoon.
