  1. I have one, water is still green. Phoszorb worked waaaay better
  2. Just curious but do maf just euthanise the red danios or everything in the tank itself? Bit painful to sacrifice your whole tank just cos of one bad buy.

    Ricca

I was reading on the net, and if you mix the riccia with java moss, it'll act like an anchor on driftwood. Indian fern floats but can get pretty massive.
  4. I quarantine, I just leave em in a tank for 3 weeks. If anything comes up I medicate them accordingly - prevents you from needing to medicate your whole tank. Just need a sponge filter and a small barebottom tank for it filled with water from your main tank. And a heater if its tropical. and... 4. fish jumping out of tanks 5. Fish getting eaten by other fish 6. Fish choking after eating another fish 7. Fish getting stressed by other fish wanting to eat them 8. Tanks breaking/leaking 9. Fish getting electrocuted when the heater malfunctions
  5. I've got 2 males as well, no luck finding the females for me. They're really hard to come by unfortunately, i've heard the suppliers purposely keep all the females to stop ppl breeding em. good luck with the hunt
  6. There was a thread about t8 versus t5 lights recently http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/what-l ... tml#244471 I like my t5s now.. only regret not getting more tubes. You can jsut get the ballasts for about 60 bucks, and the GLO tubes itself about 30 bucks? But I'm sure you could get the normal t5 from any lighting store for cheaper. Then you could fit them inside your hood or just get reflectors. Its actually getting cheaper to get lights nowadays which is great.
  7. you're right coelacanth, looks like the author of the site i read prob mixed up the two, they do look really similar.
  8. Just to add another question, do metal halides take up a lot of electricity, has your power bill jumped up any since you started using em?

    Good deal?

Hmm.. i dunno, i got one of the premade kits and then i ended upgrading lights, filter etc etc. You could always buy something in welly and drive down to pick it up Depends on how much you can be bothered really
  10. 13cm is in the wild and when they get really old... i've had mine for a year and a half.. and its still 2.5cm
  11. My goldfish tank went up to 31 degrees in summer (flat is really really wam), the goldfish were fine but ate a lot more and seemed really hyper all the time. They grew really quick too.. maybe the heat increases their metabolism? I ended up floating frozen coke bottles to get the temp down, but it didn't make much of a difference.
  12. Lol.. look for a new flatmate, one with a chronic sinus problem or stick a car frsherner on the side... it'll smell like after-tobacco. If i may make a suggestion why not a koura/crayfish tank? Saw a couple at jansens albany look pretty cool, and ya dun need a chiller or a heater. Dump in some freshwater mussels and then its kinda like a native freshwater tank...
  13. but dechlorinator is good for getting rid of bleach off equipment after a bleach dip.... i think.. well i hope... cos I just used it....
  14. I've got 3 of them, they seem to graze on the algae, but eat pellet food as well. Awesome things quite shy, but they get used to you quite quickly and do play fights. They seem to like the company of each other, even though they bump each other a lot. they're in a low light tank about 25 degrees, ph 6.0 with 2 wild bettas and a borneo sucker, and they seem to be happy.
  15. I dun think so, you can either let the water age with some aeration and the chlorine disappears by itself. Or you can just fill up the tank straight. I've been doing that since I ran out of dechlorinator 2 years ago...
  16. Yeah the bulbs were extra. I'm not sure what the actual price is cos he gave me a bit of a discount, but it was about 30 bucks each for the 39watt t5 bulbs, and about $150 for the fittings. Which is pretty good, esp cos i saw the fitting without bulbs costing $255 at another fish store.
  17. I got some t5 fittings with 2x 39 watt t5 bulbs for a 3 foot tank for a little over 200 bucks from guy on trademe called original aqua. The tank looks totally different now, pretty good cos they're cheap at that price imho. Tank with 60 watts of t8 lights Tank with 78 watts of t5 lights Just to show ya the difference. Its a 90 cm long tank btw and about 50 cm deep so its kinda about the length of yours. The light ballast thingy can extend a little too.
  18. a friendly neighborhood siamese fighter?
  19. rcon on this site was trying to breed the queen arabesques sometime last year, not sure if he succeeded tho.
  20. I didn't bother refilling my yeast bottle for about 4 months, just did it the other day and all the plants started growing, so i guess it does make a diff. Good luck decidin
  21. If you arent gonna put plants thats sweet. The light is only so that you can see the fish anyways Dunno about the brown algae though, you might get it anyways with a new setup, but it works out 1watt per gallon which is pretty decent with a 60L tank imho even with some plants.
  22. Loachs like groups of about 5, but I have a lone dwarf chain loach (his friends met their untimely demise in the broken filter inlet, that thinks hes a otto and is happy.
  23. Whoa, Catbrat where do you work?? Might need to pay you a visit!
  24. Borneo suckers is a general term for many many species, so chances are your suckers may not be from the same family if they have different markings. I love em though, mine eat discus pellets as well as algae. I have some in a wild betta tank where the temp is 26 degrees and they do fine
  25. Hey Cool! Thanks for answering Yeah they're in a planted tank with a couple of wild betta simorums, a borneo sucker and a queen arabesque pleco at the moment. I got them from jansens botany! they were in 2 different tanks, ones about 6cm, the other about 4. I love em, they seem to be dragging themselves around all the time! They've already managed to bull dose a java fern and a whole bunch of anubiases  Thanks Mel, good to know that someone else loves em too.
