I have had these both in my pond and in my tank. They don't appear to cause any problems and teh fish do eat them. If you get over run you can remove them with your stones and rinse under hot water, that kills them.

Are these any good for tropical aquariums? How much do they cost? and how much are new bulbs? What do they do?

I know of someone around here who made a pond, initally it was made for his ducks then he chucked in a couple of goldies that he didn't want inside as breeders and now he has literally thousands of goldies in his pond (and none inside anymore). He is also on a farm so the pond is very large and i think it is fed by a natural stream and he has netting or something to stop the fish ending up downstream. But i could be wrong. I know that he dug it with a tractor and then got clay (dunno where from) to seal the walls of the pond. He has an island in the middle and flaxes around one side. It is really shallow on the edges and gets deeper in the middle, dunno how deep. He has a "bridge" the water goes underneath it through a pipe. It is great to see it in summer when the fish are out sunbathing, as they are up in the shallows and their backs are out of the water, its like an orange mat. I will try to get a photo one day and post it on this site. He still has his ducks living on the pond too (he rehabilitates birds) but it doesn't seem to diminish the numbers of goldies. There are also Kingfishers and other birds that visit on occasion. Another thing - no need to let your council know you have a pond cos then they will want to come around and check on it. I know the inspectors here and i asked hypathetically 'if i have a pond..." and they said 'just don't tell us'.

dunno how much they are like bristlenoses, but my BN's change colour. Not sure what causes it, maybe it is a mood related thing (?) I asked my local pet shop abou these guys and they said they hadn't heard of them and even looked on their fish supplier lists and couldn't find them! I will ask again next time i go in. Janelle - sounz like your 2 are doing well, well done

(sorry about quality of pic but was taken with my cellphone) Is this them? I have 4 of them and they are albino glowlights. Very sweet lil fish, just like other glowlights. They are whitish with a red stripe and red eyes. I have had no problems with them, in fact they seem to be even more hardy than the neon tetras i got!

I have kept comets with fantails with no probs of tail chewing or starvation, both in ponds and in tanks. Is it possible they have fin-rot? This can do major damage to fantails over nite. Also what is your pH like? I have recently had problems (and still am) with the pH in my pond and the fish appear to be healthy and then just die overnite Luckily it hasn't been all of them but it has been teh bigger fish, leaving their babies and some of the smaller fish. How many fish do you have in what size tank? If it is overcrowded they may be tailbiting due to stress.

A.PROPHECY - had a look at your pics and considering i only saw the spider for a couple of secs before it scuttled away it looked something like the spiders in the second row, from the top, of your second link. (took a guess at the size of "my" spider by measuring where its feet touched the tank). When you keep spiders as pets do you have to catch flies and other insects for them to eat, just like with frogs? Are tehy easy to keep? Do they get sick or are they quite hardy? I am not going to keep one as a pet, but am curious. Even though it creeps me out it has now got me curious as to what type it really is and i want to catch it to solve the mystery. I havn't noticed baby fish missing, although the number of young guppies seems to have dropped, but that could have been due to a pH drop i had. As for the story "Spiders like water for drinkies, I remember someone telling me or having read that they creep up to the corner of your moth when your asleep even and have a lil sip-sip of that yummy droolage...!" I too have heard this scarey story and it didn't help me trying to sleep!! Havn't seen it again but spiders aren't exactly the most visible of creatures. Have left my window open in the hope he will find his way back outside.

Had a look at the TePapa site, creepy crawly. If i see it again i will take a pic and try to catch it under a cup. davidb - do you really want it? Cos i dunno how to send them and would only send it if i can find someone else who is willing to package it up! I am not to keen to handle it any more than i need to. Usually i just put a cup over a spider and just leave it for someone else to deal with. The problem with this one is there are a few places for it to hide - under the bed, under tank stand, on the shelves - and i won't go searching for it, it might scuttle out at me and it can move really fast! :-?

OK so i had NO IDEA where to put this question and thought this was as good a place as any. This morning i found this large spider (approx 6-7cm across and a pale brown color) sitting on top of my tank by the cut off corner bit where the wires and tubes go down. I was wondering could he eat my young/baby fish? I wasn't able to catch him or squish him, or rather my mum wasn't able to. As soon as she went near him he scuttled off down the back of the tank. YUCKY. Also does anyone have any adeas of how i can get rid of it? Obviously can't use fly spray, so is there like a spider-trap? What really grosses me out is that it is in my bedroom! (if you can't tell - I DONT LIKE SPIDERS! esp big ones)

I had some 2cm BN's sent from Auckland to Wairarapa and the majority were fine. A few got a little cold as it was in winter and died, approx 5/30

One of my goldies fins grew back. It wasn't exactly as it was before, it had changed colour and shape a bit. So i guess the same would go for your guppy.

I try to do a 20%, or so, water change every week, but occasionally i miss a week. Dare i admit this - I tried the vaccum thing but couldn't quite get a handle on it, made a bit of a mess! So i usually just stir the gravel up a bit with my hand before removing water. Still creates mess but a lil more controlled! I was mainly worried about hte killifish fry as the pH musta happened quickly in that tank and the 4 week old (?) fry all died I have some newly hatched ones now, so dont want to change anything in that tank too quickly and loose the lil fellas again!

wat buffer would you recommend? And what do pH buffers do?
-
what do the bubble things feel like?

I think most fish will eat another once it is dead or sometimes even if it is just very sick! I had one disappear that was sick and i had put in a breeding net Look out for the fish-body-snatchers!!!!

I have a problem with my ph in all 3 of my tanks!! My community tank that has - BN, neon tetra, glowlight tetra, guppies (cupla days old to adult), platies - has a pH of 6.2 (I think that right) if i try to up it using pH Up it just returns to 6.2, and the upping and downing of pH cannot be good for the fish. SO how do I get the pH to get up closer to the safer 7pH? Someone told me to try putting a shell in the tank to bing the pH up, which i will do tonite. And stabilise it? Is stabilising pH able to be done? Or is it just one of those things that is forever changing? Now, my killifish tank (the adult one and the fry one) each have a higher pH, 7.4-6 from memory? How do i get this down, and more stable? would prefer not have to resort to using ph down chemical stuff, but will if this is the only way. They have been at these levels for about a week or so. I have done the usual 20% water change. All the fish appear healthy and happy but i know that things can change pretty quick in tankworld!!

I dont think its dropsy (?) i have had one with it before so i know kinda what it looks like. Her scales aren't sticking out. She looks kinda like you could pop her, but i could never bring myself to do that!!!! I can see the air, or clear fluid, like its a large bubble. I am off home now so will see how she is doing and try putting her in a epsom salt bath (if she is still with us!)

Edit - Alan. Pic shown below

Hi there, Went on a search around and found the following Edit - Alan, Removed URL as pic is below and it also was entered wrongly. Go to this site, its in German or something, right down the bottom there are some pics of Glowlight tetra fry (Hemigrammus erythrozonus). I guess they look very similar to neon tetra fry, actually i think alot of egg-layer fry look similar.

One of my female guppies appears to be filled with air! I have put her in a breeder net thingy and haven't fed her for a couple of days, just in case it was constipation or something. But now she is floating on her side, breathing rapidly and is still full of air (you can see the air when she is under the light, it is in where her stomach is). Is there a way to fix this? She is only a newly purchased guppy and i haven't had any fry from her. She is quite pretty, blondish tuxedo(?) Would love to save her and get some fry from her!

do you have a pic? Sounz like a great lil fish, would love to get one for the goldie tank at work. Approx what price are these fellas?

Mine very rarely school! I always thought that maybe there was something wrong with them, so thanks SpidersWeb, now i know they must just be VERY happy and feeling secure

WOW $805 for a lil wee frog like that!!! Who woulda thought. Bet the "11 year old boss" is happy! If you read the comments it explains that this is not an usual albino frog but a leucistic (sp?) "Leucism is similar to albinism and is often mistaken for albinism; leucistic animals are white with dark eyes and some pigmentation" And apparently are extremely rare. However it is still a huge price to pay for one lil frog

I am going away for a few days and have some baby killies. Is there anything i should do so that they survive the few days i am away? Its just that last time i went away i came back and there were none alive The ones i have now are prolly about a week older than the last lot, but i am not exactly sure of their age.
