  1. I check my guppies every morning and nite, at least. There have been a couple of poorly lookin guppies as of late (they were quite skinny). Anyway, I usually notice the sick ones in the evening and think 'i will sort it in the morning' as it is usually just before i go to bed. But lately in the morning the fish hav disappeared completely (this is only the sick ones i am talking about) I search all over the tank for them and cant find any trace of them anywhere! Even one i had in a holdign net thing disappeared! How can they just disappear in just one nite? The other fish in the tank are: BN, platies and neon tetras. Its such a mystery. Unfortuantely the latest disappearance was a lovely little snakeskin male, and i have seperated a beautiful tux female who looks as if she has swim bladder
  2. Good on you Tsarmina No probs on the tip. I agree that only under extreme circumstances would i ever be able to give any of them away! The more you love the bigger your heart is (yep its valentines day  ) I have 2 cats at work (started as VERY timid strays that i managed to gain the trust of) and 1 at home (all fixed). I dont think u can hav too many cats, as long as they are all well fed and happy with someone to love and care for them there is no probs. Its when people can't feed, care and love for them all then they hav too many!
  3. Did u know that the SPCA has a spaying amnesty in, I think its, March or May. I used this to get the tom cat at work fixed. From memory it costs $15 per cat, male or female. Ask your local SPCA to find out when it is and which vets are part of it. All I had to do was go to the vets, book him in and take the voucher (which has to be used within the certain time period), easy peasy and soooo much cheaper!
  4. The container was completely open, he used to jump in and out all the time. He was only a small green frog about 3cm long and possibly we overfed him! He had a fly a day plus the container of mealworms (the mealworms were quite large mayb 4cm. Now i think about it it kinda stupid to be feeding the frog something that is bigger than him) was always in his tank so who knows how many of those he had!! Now I know how little they need to eat I won't b feeding the next frog that much!! Will they just eat themselves to death!? How bizarre.
  5. We had at work a frog and 2 tadpoles. The frog was doing really well and then yesterday he died He was in the container which contained sawdust and mealworms (bought from petshop) and he was covered all over with sawdust, is this what killed him? We were rather sad to see him go as he was way cute!! We would love to know if him being covered in sawdust is wat killed him so we dont make that mistake again! Just to clarify this container was in a tank which contained water and rocks. We now only have 1 tadpole left as the other got extremely thin and had a large bump on his side, so euthanised him.

    dageti eggs

    dageti eggs

still got the eggs but they havn't hatched yet and it has been like 3 weeks! :-? Dunno whats goin on there? Any suggestions. The degati have spawned again but i havn't removed the eggs so they prolly all got eaten, but when i do their water change etc this weeekend i will have a look
  9. Have you tried using AquaPro - The Magic Pond Sucker? I hear they work a real treat

    ph up

sharn mentioned peat and shell bits for upping and lowering ph. Wat other more "natural" remedies are there for all these things that need to be kept stable, so we dont hav to use the chemicals?
  11. He was living in a tank indoors with 3 other fish. He was approx 15cm from nose to tail tip. They get fed goldfish flakes, the occasional spirulina disc (just cos we got some to use up) and peas as a treat. When i said he was thin, i just meant thinner than usual. They are quite greedy these fish and yes he was still eating. Before i worked here the other lady that looked after them used to clean out the tank by taking out most of the water and replacing it entirely with tap water with stress coat, this was for about 5 years but she left 3yrs ago so wouldn't hav thought it was due to that stress. Now they get the usual 20% with the occasional larger water change. There were no white patches and this morning when i found him his fins were ragged but not previously. They do put up with alot these fish as they are on display in a public library. Fishboi (or any1 else for that matter) - How does lighting affect them? They do have a light on top of their tank. I have been keeping an eye on the other fish (2 comets and a blue fan nymph) which appear to have no probs.
  12. Unfortunately he died last nite I buried him this morning but before i did i took some pix of the black marks so they may be identified and i can keep an eye on the other fish plus possibly find out what causes it and how to fix it. I couldn't get a digital camera to take the pics when he was a live, So please do not be offended by the photos of poor dead Fish that are to follow: The marks hav faded a lil since he died but they are just visible there behind his fin. Is it possible are a result of sickness or another symptom due to something else? We have no idea wat caused his death and would like some idea.

    ph up

is there a rule for how much ph up, or down, per litre will change the ph and by how much? And how long till you know the ph has gone up, or down, as far as it is going to?
  15. Farmchick - that site is way sad!!! I couldn't even look at the videos I saw the pics on that first page and that was enough.
  16. I have 2 at work Griffyn Toffee And my one at home is 14yo Misty whose favourite TV is either the tank or pond. This pic is one of her on her "pond viewing platform". As someone nicely put: I am their "Meowmie" (for those who don't get it, its a twist on Mummy)
  17. also forgot to mention he looks a bit thin. I dont know how old he is maybe 10yrs, so could it just be old age? He is now floating on his side and bent, but can swim upright when he moves.
  18. I had them too, cept mine tended to be half in the gravel and waved around. If you want to get rid of them i only managed by when i changed over tanks i washed the gravel in hot water, thus killing the wormy things. I dont thank they harm at all, they just look a little odd.
  19. that could make sense cos the weather and water has been warmer than usual and that means less ozygen in hte tank. Though i would have thought that the other fish would also show some signs of lacking ozxygen. The fluval filter also aerates the water by blowing bubbles into the water.
  20. Mine did that 4 awile. I just boiled it every week or so for a few weeks, keeping it in the tank in between boilings. Now, after about 6 months of being in hte tank there seems to be no, or very little discolouration.
  21. The comet at work has suddenly developed these black marks and his breathing is laboured. I think he will die but i would like to know what is/was wrong with him. I have treated him with Melafix and quarantined him. I wil be keeping a close eye on the other fish. The black marks look kinda like the black mould that grows in wet areas. I searhced on the net to no avail and the closest i got was Black smaudge disease wich they didn't supply much info on. Will try to get a pic.
  22. Hi thanx for that I did turn off the heater before removing it but guess it hadn't cooled down enoug wen i put it into the tank  I just been out and bought a cheap MasterPet $20 job. Luckily I had another heater and used that, but hadn't planned on using it in this tank. Also I missed one of my guppies from the old tank and she survived overnite with no heating! And it was quite cold last nite (we almost had a frost apparently!). I was shocked We will see if she lasts with no ill effects!
  23. Well I did a silly thing! I took my heater out of the tank, as i was changing the tanks around, and then iput it into the new tank except it was still hot! (the heater that is;)) So of course as i added water it hissed, sizzled and then the glass casing bit cracked! So my question is can the glass cover bit be replaced? And where can you get the piece from? Also how do you test that the heater still works, since it had water get in on the heating part. Wat wonderful technical words i use
  24. what plant food would people recommend for use in a planted, tropical fish aquarium? And for cold water?

    dageti eggs

I think i have dageti eggs!!!! I have taken them from their parents tank and put them in a net breeder thing in my fry tank. How long till they are born? And what do I feed them? Food I have: Freeze-dried tubifex worms; freeze dried blood worms; Aqua One tropical flakes; spirulina discs; dried plankton culture (do I need to do any preparation with this before feeding to any of the fish?); and am now trying to hatch some Brine Shrimp eggs that someone gave me, but they may be a bit old. Any other advice/tips will be gratefully received.
