  1. You could try putting the female in a net with some fine leafed plants, like java moss, this will give the bubs a place to hide out from mum. Easier to hide from 1 adult than lots. Another thing you could try is to put some larger sized pebbles on the bottom of your tank. This will create small gaps that the fry can hide in but for the adults is a bit of a squeeze. Remember to put the female in the net just before she gives birth to reduce the amount of time she spends inthere. Although upon saying this i have kept guppies for a few days in a net and they have been fine. The yellow/gold females with red in their tails are very pretty i have one and a couple of fry who look to be of similar colour For feeding the fry - just crush up some of the flake/granules to a smaller size if you are worried they are not getting enough. However i just leave mine and they seem to eat leftovers, the bits the adults spit out, as well as nibbling at the food along with the adults (obviously near plants wehre they can quickly swim away). Love your tank

    frog?

So do they sun themselves to warm up? Will he go hybernate somewhere? Theres a good palm-tree-type plant for him to hang out in, so will he be back next year?
  4. So i went back to the pet shop to find out what they were, apparently they are head and tail light tetras. They also had some albino glowlight tetras, they were only a coupel of dollars each so i thought 'what the hell' and bought 4 of them

    frog?

Hi all, I think i have a frog living in/around my pond. I havn't seen it only heard this chirruping sound starting at about 4pm going through to about 8pmish. As much as i like frogs i dont want him living here and was wondering if anyone knows a way to lure him out so i can catch it and then I can release it somewhere safer, i.e. where there are less cats. I go out most nites to see if i can spot him, but knowing how small frogs can be and all the hidey holes means that he has been rather elusive. For fun i recorded his chirruping sound using my cellphone and played it back to him to see what would happen, sometimes he replies and other times he goes quiet for awhile before starting up again. Anyways any help on the how to catch the frog would be much appreciated
  6. Maths isn't my strong point either but I worked it out and got the same result. Sounz like alot though doesn't it!!
  7. Thanx for that, Nice to know I am doing the right things When the lillies are removed do they need to be kept in water? Was at the SPCA a few months ago and was reading their pamphlet on keeping pond fish (or was there a bit in their column in the paper) Hmmm.. Anyways it said to remember to feed your goldfish more over winter as there were not so many bugs aroundn I thought that was wrong at the time as i have never fed my Goldies over winter due to the fact they never eat it and it just pollutes the water! I didn't tell them as I wasn't really sure but next time I am in at the SPCA i will see if they do have a pamphlet which says that and tell them to change it. Now to get the courage to get in the cool water and do the maintenance :-?
  8. Saw these in my local pet shop the other day. Were just labelled albino tetras, but what type of tetra? Sorry about photo quality, it is from my cellphone.
  9. I was just wondering what do people do, if anything, to get their ponds ready for winter?
  10. Wish i had room for another tank to make a "Black-Tank" for them. But unfortunately no room left in bedroom Or is there..... 8)
  11. They are perfectly round. Just like Killi or goldie eggs but much smaller. They weren't really stuck hard to the inside of the filter, i could easily remove them with a light touch of my finger. I thought that snail eggs were round eggs inside of a larger sack-type thing that sticks to whatever. Or are ramshorns different?
  12. I was cleaning out my filter this morn, it was long overdue (I have a Fluval 2+). When something caught my eye. On the inside of the filter (on the plastic not in the spongey bit) were little clear eggs, they were quite small maybe half mm in diameter (?) Whose could they be? The Neon Tetras? I have in the tank guppies and platies (obviously not theirs  ) BN's (their eggs are orange?) neon tetras, ramhorn snails and 'pest' snails. Neon Tetra eggs are light sensitive, yes? So if the eggs are theirs it si now possible that they will 'die' as they were exposed to light? Anyways, it's had me wondering all morning.

  14. How do i tell if my BN is preggy? She is only about 5-6cm long and is looking a bit fat in the belly. Also I have 2 boys, one about 10cm the other about 6cm (at least i think he is a he, just has a small bristle on either side of his head), will they be OK together once one is in charge of the eggs? The BN's are in a 65 (?) litre communtiy tank with neons, guppies and platies.
  15. The tank has stones on the bottom with a few plants, a resin bell and a spawning mop. It is not a huge tank, i think the tank size is about 50cm x 30cm (?) I am not worried about breeding them to get heaps of numbers and i have a seperate small tank for the eggs/babies (not sure how many are in there as i dont see the lil ones very often, there is stuff for them to hide in). I just would like to raise a few young every now and again for the interest/fun of it. I check the spawning mop every now and again. Can usually tell if they are going to spawn, as their colours get really strong. Then when i check the mop that nite there are usually a few eggs there.
  16. What type of algae eating fish would be recommended to be put in a tank with Epiplatys Degati? I read on here that BN's eat the eggs, is there an algae eater that doesn't or is less likely too? Or would apple snails or ramshorns or other type of snail be better at eating algae but not eggs or plants? I have no preferences at the mo, so open to all suggestions
  17. Sounz like they may be mosquito larvae (?) Do they look a bit like stikmen without arms? And wiggle in a s shape?

    pond sludge

It cost between $25-$30 depending on which of my local petshops i went too. Then I had to buy the PVC tubing stuff which price depends on how much you get, I think it was about $3/m from the plumbing supplies shop. farmchick - it doesn't appear to suck up the fish as it has slits in the end which are about 1cm (?) wide so only babies who dont swim fast enuf could get sucked up. I didn't suck up any, that i know of. If you are worried about it you could probably put netting over the end. If the end gets covered with leaves or larger debris you just remove pond sucker from pond and remove debris with your hand, the water from the hose does not come out the end but carries on around and out the tubing. The only problem with it is that it doesn't have a long handle so you need to get down and dirty (or just fall in like i did  ) Although if you are a DIYer u could possibly build and attach a handle. p.s. the name AquaPro the Magic Pond Sucker is the correct name
  19. SilverBlade - As far as i understand you will need to let the concrete cure. Same goes with the silicon. As they both can have some kind of toxin release into the water if they aren't cured. I think you do this by washing them a few times in water after they have dried completely. Someone else on here with a bit more experience/knowledge will know more about this My male BN just digs out under his piece of bogwood and makes his own cave, good exercise for him
  20. My adult male will sometimes swim quickly straight up the side of the tank and appear to jump out of the water Luckily he has never gone through the gap! Its quite funny and sometimes gives me a fright, esp when I am feeding or cleaning out with the top off.

    pond sludge

Just bought myself an AquaPro Magic Pond sucker (i think that what it is called) and tried it out on the weekend. It works really well! Works like a vacuum cleaner ie it sucks up the sludge. Just join your hose to one bit and some PVC clear tubing to the other bit; turn on the tap and vacuum pond. You can see the sludge travelling down the PVC tubing and out onto the lawn or garden. Just thought i would let people know
  22. My pond was made using black pond liner, the stuff you buy at the Warehouse. It works well as long as you put sand or something between it and the earth so as not to get holes. It is also good for if you decide to remove or redo your pond in any way. The downfalls are that holes can appear and leak (although I had my first one for 7 years before replacing it and that was only to upsize); the black colour can heat up the pond if there is not enuf shade; its hard to stand in it if u need to do maintenance ie it is very slippery. But it it a cheap and hardy alternative. Concrete can gives u a bit more flexibility. It is not slippery. You will have to age the concrete before putting fish etc in. And of course it is a bit more permanent and possibly requires more work if you decide to upsize your pond. A friend of mine has a huge manmade pond that he lined with clay. It is very effective and natural. He has both waterfowl and goldfish living in his pond. I dont know much about how he did it etc. though. Another friend uses those big round concrete troughs for her goldfish. The upside to these is that you dont need to dig them into the ground so less labour involved Nways there are my views Good luck with ur pond, wateva way u decide to make it.
  23. Also a glazier friend of mine said that carpet can sometimes have bits of sand or other grit that, with the weight of the tank, rub against the glass creating small scratches which create a weak point in the glass. Make sense? I prefer poly, a good way to recycle it
  24. I think some people think that the cat needs to fulfil some instinctual need before it gets fixed  Dunno if i go for that argument tho. I think it can stunt their growth if they have the litter too early. Also some people don't realise how young a cat can be and get surprised by the unexpected pregnancy. Most fixed cats i know that have been fixed and never had a litter are normal balanced cats. Wat i dont understand is people who have unfixed male dogs and then expect them to lead a celibate life!
