  1. Welcome, you should find quite a bit of helpful stuff here if you're starting a new tank. Good luck.

    Hello!!

Welcome to the fishroom, hope you find some useful stuff here.
  3. How large are these drawers? The less volume of water in the sump the more risk evaporation will decrease the water level and suck air into your pump, damaging it and cutting off the filtration. The drawers may be good for holding filter material, but I'd put them inside a larger container to act as the sump, have one or two drawers of filter floss submerged and trickle water down through the other drawers. I like the idea of using those plastic drawers though. It should be easy to clean out the filter and you can get the trickle effect just by punching lots of small holes in the drawer bottoms. Also, if you have them standing alone then you'll spill a lot of water every time you open a drawer since any sitting in the bottom of that drawer would pour out of the bottom onto the floor. If you arrange it so that they don't reach out beyond the rim of a larger sump container when open you'd avoid this.
  4. They're fine with tetras and bristlenoses too. My personally tested list of successful combinations with fighters: Guppies Tetras (Neon) Bristlenoses Kuhli loaches Platies Black ghost knife fish (until it grows too large) Zebra danios They're fine with almost anything.
  5. Siamese fighters differ greatly in temperament. I've had some that were really violent, my worst is actually a female who loves disembowelling guppies and now has to live in a 'breeding net' to protect the other fish in the tank, but most are fine. Some males just can't be kept with other long finned fish but most will only nip every so often if at all and if you keep them with reasonably tough fish and don't mind slightly nipped fins they're fine. Guppies are perfect for keeping with fighters, I do without any problems (with the exception of my grumpy female, Scelesta). What you really need to watch is other fish nipping the fighter's fins. Any fish that have even slightly aggressive tendencies will find those long trailing fins irresistable and will tear them to shreds. If the worst comes to the worst, spend $5 to $10 on a large breeding net and keep them in that. Be aware that some have a tendency to jump so be careful with anything without a lid. I don't know about angels, I don't have any.
  6. I just found a bug in the program, I'm repairing it and reloading the new version. Typing anything other than a number causes the program to fail and it has to be force-closed. Problem fixed, version 1.1 is up.
  7. Welcome Conaquavict, hope you like it here.
  8. Note: temporary download problems, I'll fix them after dinner. OK, It looks like my hosting doesn't like the filetypes. I don't know how long it'll take to get the zip file for the windows version onto the mirrors, if you try and can't get it today perhaps you should try again tomorrow. I've renamed the source to a .txt file and the linux version has a .bin extension added to the end so they can be accessed.
  9. I just wrote a small program for those who don't have excel etc. There are two versions available, one for Windows and one for Linux. Website
  10. Welcome to the fishroom. The pics look excellent, I love the tank. One thing though - it took me ages to load the page with a 56k modem. At 400Kb each you just can't afford to place six photos on one page. Including a thumbnail system would make browsing a bit easier. I (and most other visitors) would probably end up loading them all anyway but opening one at a time prevents the slowing right down of old computers like this one I'm stuck with. Great photos anyway, wish I had a tank of that size .
  11. The oil and water shouldn't mix. A drop or two of normal dishwashing detergent can fix this. Dark mentioned that he's used this method quite a lot before with great success.
  12. If you buy anything expensive, the petshop in Coastlands, Paraparaumu, is much cheaper than Animates. They also do a discount if you join an FNZAS affiliated club. I just discovered that place a little while ago and got a test kit for $45 that would've cost me $70 in Animates! I've never heard of "lumens". Do you mean lux? I don't know much about lighting but even if a lumen is a unit, the plural of lumen is lumina. No offense but I'm picky .
  13. For the Kapi-Mana Aquarium Club we meet on the last wednesday of each month in Tawa. I believe membership is $20/year.
  14. Welcome booger, To get help on what your fish is you might need to give more details and/or a photo. Colour doesn't tell us much about species. Hope you get a lot of enjoyment out of this place.
  15. To raise the eggs manually lower the water to 5cm or less and add methylene blue. The eggs that sank may still be viable but snails should be removed to prevent them from having a snack.
  16. Got mine! Just starting to read...
  17. It sounds like you mean the wild form. I thought we didn't have them in NZ , the NZKA site only lists the gold form. There's a picture here: http://www.petfish.net/wilin.jpg
  18. I don't keep gouramis but yes, I think fighters don't get on that well with them. You hear cases where people keep fighters and gouramis with no trouble and others where they just won't stop nipping each other. They're unlikely to actually kill each other directly through occasional fights but their immune systems will be weaker and they may be more susceptible to disease. If possible, I'd separate them with a divider.
  19. If you sleep on the couch you could fit a massive tank where your bed used to be! Welcome .
  20. Welcome. Careful, there's a constant plague of MTS (multiple tank syndrome) in this community and if you catch it I bet you'll have at least three more fish tanks within a year!
  21. The fry became free swimming on the 3rd and they're now taking microworms. If I manage to raise a decent number then I'll probably offer some at postage cost only to FNZAS members when they're old enough.
  22. I don't have any methylene blue . I added a commercial aquarium antiseptic though. I'll try to get hold of some ASAP.
  23. The largest female is about 4 to 5cm long including her tail and the male is about 3cm.
  24. I thought my new lineatus killies were too young to reproduce but on turning the lights on this morning I saw the male nudging the largest female into the floating spawning mop in my tank. I just searched through the two mops (one floating, one sinking) and found 14 eggs about 1mm across, clear with a yellow tinge. I've put them in a jar floated in the tank where I'm currently raising a spawning of baby siamese fighters. The adults have been fed for the last couple of days on large brackish water mosquito larvae from Island Bay. If I collect more tomorrow then I might manage to raise 10 and get a breeding scheme point .
  25. The eggs seem to have hatched, I could see little tails hanging down from the nest this morning. Unfortunately, he's moved the bubblenest again for about the fifth time and I can't see the bottom of it any more. I should see when they're free swimming though .
