    Hi everyone

Hi and welcome. It might help for future reference, to state where your from in your profile. It saves a lot of unecessary questions. I have guppy fry at the moment, which are about 2-3 weeks old. Nice food for your shark lol. There are also a couple of others I know for sure have guppy young. They may well post and say Hi.
  2. Although I have never used a HOB filter, I have had great success with canister filters. Even my old antique lol. Reason I like them is the size, and volume of media they can hold. The one thing that puts me off the HOB's are the sound of water falling back into the tank. Would make me want to P all the time lol.
  3. do they have split tails or single tails? It is my understanding that those with split tails are worth more. check out trademe for prices.

    Flow rates

In regards to who may stock them, check out trademe. Have seen several waterfal style filters suitable for your tank, and I'm almost certain they were Jebo ones. We just purchased to aqua ones for our 450L tank. mucho grunto.
  5. Just wrap some filter wool, an old stocking or something similar around the intake. This will prevent any fry being sucked up.

    New tank!

Trademe has a good selection of plants, and as the WCMM prefer colder temps, you would be best to go with cold water plants. As for adding fish straight away, I wouldn't add more than 6 at first, because cycling can be hazardos to a fishes health. congrats on the new tank.
  7. I'm more concerned about when I'm not home to hear an alarm or such. Will ask the Mod when I see he is on next.
  8. What can I buy to protect my tank from cooking, should a heater decide to jam on and keep heating the water??
  9. Way to go. Welcome to parent hood lol.
  10. IMHO, you would be just fine with sand as your base. Also, you could do away with the flourish and just use bio balls if you really wanted something. I've found the best booster for my plants are plenty of fish and good lighting. what are the dimensions of your tank? If it's not too huge, i can't see why two lights the length of the tank wouldn't be enough. I've seen mention about day glow/ aqua glow lights on this forum, maybe if you search lights you will find some good info.
  11. Thanks for the replies all. I am having my stand and hood etc made for me, so need to know what I need to light it all up. I've gathered quite a bit of info from these posts already. If anyone has anything to add please do. Full on DIY is not a problem.
  12. Ok. I've got a 1500L & 500w tank that I need to light up. What's the best way for me to do this? IE what sort of lights, places to get bits from and refelectors? Ya you know what I mean. Any and all DIY hints welcome.
  13. LOL, I'm not sure I want any. In fact I'd prefer not to have them, but was wondering if they were "important" to a tank. Thanks for the offer anyways Paul
  14. Hey all. I'm wanting to know your opinions on having snails in the tank? The pro's and con's. Also what type of snails y'all prefer. Cheers
  15. Hi Caper. The white tube is the outflow pipe from pump to external filter. The green tube/pipe you see is the return flow from the filter. It's a bit crude, but that's how I got it. Mind you the fish love swimming in the current from the return flow, especially my rasbora. And I think the square thing you can see is my breeder trap with guppy fry in it. Ya know, plants aren't that fussy or hard to grow. All I have is the light and fishies to make mine grow. Mind you there are 40 odd fish in that tank, lol.
  16. Thanks for your comments guys n gals. It's encouraging. Yep for sure, name the day and time and it's all good.

    Sand

We have just started collecting sand from Wainui beach. Some of it is quite fine, but we collected the courser stuff. It's nice and dark , so very little shell (if any) in it. Am just going to soak it for a few days to remove any particles etc.
  18. Hey there. If your guppy is pregnant, don't worry too much if she hasn't dropped her fry yet. Guppies can hold on to their brood until such time as they feel comfortable enough to birth. My female guppy was heavily pregnant when I got her on 31st dec 05 and she only decided to drop her brood just under a week ago. If she's preggy, she will drop when she's ready.
  19. I've been working on the page and made some changes. A new window will open when you click the thumbnails, coz I'm bad for closing pages insted of hitting back button, so I'm sure I'm not the only one lol.
  20. Thanks peanuts, I thought so too. Most of the plants will be put into the other tank when it's ready, and I will leave cuttings in the small tank. I also moved the heater when I did the water change today, lower and to the left more. Thanks
  21. Hey all. I finally snapped my tank and I'm after some feedback please. It will help me when I set up my big tank. http://www.cloggy.net/fish_tank.html

    Worming fishies

Ok, so I don't really need to worry about it then?
  23. What? When? How? Ok so what do I worm my fishies with, when and how? Do I have to wait until they show signs of having worms? or can I simply treat them just because?
  24. In the past I have had female betta with guppies with no issues. To me they appeared to be a very peaceful fish. I can't help you with the fry though sorry.

    Sailfin Plecos

While I am no expert on catfish, it is MHO that any fish that is happy and has the right conditions etc will breed. What sort of substrate do you have on the bottom of the tank? Are they alone in the tank? I would certainly see it as a challenge, but not impossible. I guess it would come down to mimicking their natural environment as closely as you can. Also I would use some of the other tips I have seen on this site in regards to breeding catfish.
