  1. I love it here. The city gets me into too much trouble. Like the small town feel of this place.
  2. ooohhh nooooo not another wainuiomartian. Welcome.
  3. Ok, either I'm at the wrong place http://kmac.fnzas.org.nz/ or I'm blind. I can't see any trade and exchange nor can I see any other clickable links on that page. It's off to google I go.
  4. Awesome Faren, Thanks. When I have transplanted all my fish into the big tank, I will have a go at breeding the congo's in the 100L tank. What exactly do you mean by medium on the bottom? When I'm ready to give these guys a serious go at breeding I will be hitting you up for info.
  5. Hi Faren. I shall hunt down the KMAC site and see if I can access it.
  6. What is a good SMALL filter suitable for 20-40L of freshwater? I'm after one for my fry tank. So it has to be gentle and not cause tidal waves for my babies.
  7. Well, what can I say. Have had this group of fish since Sunday and one of the males keeps herding one of the females into the indian fern and shivers(?) til she joins him. The tank is still cycling so i guess it was the earth worms we fed them last night that have them all randy and ready. As a side note, it's darned hilarious watching these fish eat worms. Talk about tug o war and chase.
  8. When it comes to the sharks, just make sure you have a well covered tank. If you don't your liable to find a dried out shark outside the tank somewhere. They are jumpers and jump right out of the tank given half a chance. Mine commited suicide a few months ago and we now have a completely covered tank.
  9. Have you added anything new to the tank? Over feeding causes cloudyness too. Are you using carbon in your filters? and if so, when was the last time it was replaced? IMO you'd be better off ditching the carbon all together as after a few weeks it starts leeching the ammonia etc back into the water.
  10. It's really annoying not being able to search. Sooo I'd like to know, what tubes would be best for my 4ft lights? They have to be good for the fish and plant growth. What light output is best. So numbers etc appreciated.
  11. Yep Lynda, it's sand courtesy of the Wainui beach.
  12. Hehe, yeah it's cardboard. Temporarily, until the proper hood is built. Stopped the glare of the lights while trying to take photos.
  13. First pic is how the tank looked when I got it. Second pic is the tank as of last night, after raping and pilaging my small tank for plants.
  14. Edited this post, and have removed links as the url and img tags didn't work.
  15. Hi Lynda I'm going to transfer my community fish into the big tank and hopefully add some kribensis, dwarf gourami, congo tetra and a few more catfish/pleco. Maybe a redtail shark. I might also buffer the schooling fish numbers.

Hi. you might want to pose your questions under the freshwater category. It appears those in the know about discus, don't come into the welcome section. good luck with getting answers

I've seen guppies in with discus. BlueandKim may be able to answer your questions. They have some truely beautiful discus.
  18. Ok. Most of you know I got a large 2nd hand tank off TM. First mission was to scrape the crappy blue paint off the back of the tank and re-paint it matt black. Looks primo. Next mission was the stand, which has been welded together (thanks darling), primed and spray painted gloss black. The top and bottom boards screwed in place. Stand is inside now, with tank on top. We got our filters (Aqua One - CF-1000) the other day so have connected them up and placed them in the tank. We found the bio balls in the bottom to rattle around a bit with water flow, but we fixed that by putting them between a layer of filter wool, now they are totally silent. Tank now has dark course sand (from Wainui beach) as substrate, a loverly piece of DW (from a river in the bush) for centre piece, is full of water and the cycle has started. We bought some standard tube lights from Mitre10 which will be built into the hood. I will replace the tubes with ones suitable for plant growth. One of the Jebo 300 watt heaters arrived yesterday (don't know what happened to the 2nd) so that is in the tank too, gently warming the water. In a few days I will start planting in the tank. Will add some pics soon.
  19. Oh and it's a clear silicon suitable for aquariums. Most hardware stores will have it.
  20. why not put a smidgen of silicon on a finger and push it into place over the leak (without emptying the tank). the pressure of water will keep the silicon in place and will seal the leak.

    Hi everyone

Hi Fingol. Good on you for updating your profile. Not too sure what colors my guppy will be. Still so small. But I have noticed (after sitting there staring for last 30 mins) that one of them is a reddish color. Stands out from the rest. Can't wait to see what they will look like a bit older. I may end up chucking them into my big tank in a week or so, to help with the cycling. Probably get lost in there lol.
