    Hi All,

Hi there Larry, I think you will become a very resorceful member as lake cichlids are very popular in NZ, Malawi cichlids are a bit more popular due to availablity but the tangs are catching up due to more varietys becoming available. A question of interest do you have frontosa? and if you do, do you breed your own or import? and what varietys? As you can tell im a front fan. Anyway welcome and enjoy the taste of NZ fishkeeping.
  7. You are more than welcome to pop around and meet jonathon  Infact anyone down this way is welcome.

    Major Disaster!

What africans have you got lined up? and your friend is lucky that you where partial setup and ready. I try to always have a spare empty 90cm*45cm*45cm tank or a 120cm*45cm*45cm but have sold it to a friend, will have to get another, maybe a quick shop through the buy sell exchange I find having a spare is handy especially having big fish, as if they get sick you can pull the fish out and give it a medicated bath and treat the problem directly, insteed of dosing your main aquarium (proves to be alot cheaper to do it like this some medications are not cheap) and maybe have to mature filters and do extra water changes on the main aquarium (depending on setup). Kinda got of the beaten track here But does anyone else do this?
  11. I am going to chch tomorrow so I will take the camera and take some photos of some fish up there so others can see what is available. Sound like a good idea?
  12. Midas I have had A little experience with these fish, but have never kept them yet, My friends have some so I can tell you this thay are slow growing can eat anything up to 2/3 of its size and take about 3 years to mature, males grow to 16cm females grow to 10cm. There alot of different colour varietys so check out www.armkes.com I'll get to craig to post here aswell as he has go them
  13. At organisms I think they are a bit cheaper around $6-$7 can someone confirm this?

    Filter prices

It was the one with media to expensive to buy the media seperately.
  16. Beating who though yeah i agree only in large schools so they pick at each other or harass the females insteed of other longfinned fish. Mind you though i kept 5 with my discus for a while with no real problems. Found a fish that hates tiger barbs, a six barred distichodus. Added it to the tank and was swimming around with them then when i got home from work it had beat the hell out of them, so i moved it and the tigers are still a little shy, got some of own back i think, as for the wolf in sheeps clothing is now in the discus tank and thinks hes a clown loach :-? it has problems.

    Filter prices

I got quoted $270 for a fluval 404, so that is very expensive. What about the Via Aqua range? I recently got a 750 canaister model that does 1200LPH for $202 dollars and it is doing a brillant job on my oscar tank, goldie will testify to that. There is another brand on the market that is alot cheaper than the traditional models. I also have friends that are using models in this range and have no problems so far and swear by them I have found in ashburton alot cheaper than chch, and for fishfood as well.
  18. What is the web address? sounds interesting
  19. So what did you all think? Please let me know curious of others opinions .
  20. OOOps forgot the lemon tetra they are nice when they are older, in the shops they dont show there nice yellow colour, so dont be put of if they look plan and they are cheap $2 each I recall
  21. No the purple tetra is not a type of emperor tetra, its species name is Hyphessobrycon metae. Is similar shape to the black neon but is purple, it grows to 5cm and is a peaceful schooler ph under 7 and soft water i think the price is around the $7 mark so they are a little dear. The black phantom is a another nice tetra but i'd prefer the red phantom myself, it is another good schooling tetra and around $5 each. As for the diamond tetra I'm not really a fan but its a bigger sized tetra, sorry dont know much about it. What about congo tetras? they are a relly nice fish and are rather big and would cope in with medium sized cichlids. Bleeding hearts show there best colours in peaty waters and subdued lighting, the rosy is the same but lacks the heart shape botch on the body. Mind you though there is many nice tetras out there and everyones taste is different Let me know what you go with
  22. I'd recommend rummynoses or cardinal tetras as they tend to stay in a really tight group, and are extremly colourful. But the price is a little on the high side. Bleeding hearts are another tight schooling tetra, and there cousin the rosy tetra is just as good and only about $4-$5 a fish. Currently there is a tetra called the purple tetra which are quite nice. Dont get neons as they just dont school together that well and are maybe to social. Silvertips are nice as the copper and yellow tones are bueatiful but as a friend found out the males are quite aggresive against each other during mating conditions. He says always have more females then males 3:1 ratio I think
  23. It is open on saturdays until 4pm i think of the top of my head.
